MARION COUNTY AR
NEWSPAPERS

Marion Co, AR was formed 29 Sep 1836 and for the next 37 years the citizens of the county depended on out-of-town newspapers. The first local paper printed in the County was the Gazette founded in Mar 1873 by Frank Mason. The newspaper office was located in Yellville and due to lack of financial support closed a scant 17 months later. The next paper, The Post, did slightly better - lasting two years, until it also closed for lack of financial support.
Twelve years passed before the County again had a local paper. Then in 1886 three newspaper offices opened - a paper called the Videtta. Issac Clark's Yellville Watchman and The Mt. Echo. The Videtta. and Yellville Watchman didn't last long. (Other then the Echo there are no known copies of these early newspapers.) By the end of 1886 The Mt Echo was the only newspaper in operation.
The Mt Echo, located in Yellville, produced a weekly paper from 1886 until Dec 2001 when it was purchased by The Flippin Mountaineer and the name was changed to The Mountaineer Echo.
1994 Special Edition Produced for Turkey Trot. Reprinted photos & articles from old issues
Rush Creek Bugle - The only copy (that I'm aware of) of a newspaper from the Mining era in Marion Co.
