Mountaineer Echo Newspaper, Yakima Valley news by Frankie Seay, Week of June 27, 2002 Issue: Our Yakima Herald carried obituaries of two former Yellville men today. One of them is a distant cousin of mine on my mother's side of my family and also a schoolmate at Yellville-Summit grade school. Alf Lavern RICE was born to Alf and Clara RICE in south Marion County on November 5, 1923 and passed away at Yakima, Washington on Thursday, June 13, 2002. He went to school at Yellville for part of his schooling and I remember him there as well as his brother, Warren RICE, who was older than Lavern. I'm, not sure just when he came to Yakima to live but he's been here for many years. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends. In 1972, he married Diana SALDANA here in Yakima and she preceded him in death in 2001. Also preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Ernie RICE. Lavern is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Tim FRIEZ of Yakima, grandsons Travis and Shane FRIEZ of Yakima; brothers Warren RICE and Jerry RICE, both of Topeka, Kansas; step daughters and stepsons and their spouses, Connie and Jim COUREY, Mary and Chuck PIERSON, all of Yakima; Saul and Nora SALADANA of Federal Way, Washington; Andrez and Carmelia SALDANA and Salvador and Janet SALDANA, all of Yakima; 40 step grandchildren and 3 step-great grandchildren. Lavern was buried here at Terrace Heights Memorial Park on June 17, 2002. My sympathy to his surviving family, which includes Diana's children.
