[Submitted by Dawn Gray, Mt. Echo Staff] [Additional Info: Mt Echo Feb 22, 2001 issue Yakima Valley (Wash.) News by Frankie Saye, Feb 12 # 318] Another obituary is that of Margie (Pannell) Smith, who was born at Everton and died in Yakima Jan. 8. She and her family are well known here and in Arkansas and her funeral was one of the largest I've seen in a long time, so many friends here, as well as those of us from Marion County. She was sick for many years, but kept her sense of humor and was such a friendly lady, it was a joy to know her. Our sympathy to her family, she is truly missed.
There were many from "back home" at Margie's funeral and I'm sure I didn't see or recognize all of them, but the ones I talked to were Harold Cunningham, Avo (Brown) Young and her daughter Billie, Moleen Cline, Hoyt and Belle Brown, Ruth Kisner and her daughter, Warren and Daphna Rose, Imogene (Wilburn) Payne, Herbert and Sara Guthrie, Goob and Florene Sasser, Levy Covey, Alonzo and Billie Young, Charles Young, Joyce (McEntire/Pepper) Vaughan, George and Lois (Black) Gray, Willie Waters, Alan and Oletha Underwood, Verna Stonecipher, Betty (Lancaster) Southards and probably more that I can't think of right now.
It seems that funerals are the only place we all see each other anymore and we're losing so many old friends, someone said that we're about to run out, and that's not good.

Mt. Echo Newspaper Feb 8, 2001 issue: Yakima Valley (Wash.) News column by Frankie Seay Jan 29, #316: We lost a former Arkansas man this week. Troy CROW was born at Yardell, but had lived in the Yakima area for many years, where he owned and operated orchards and raised a family. He was well known here and had many Arkansas friends who attended his funeral; Moleen CLIME, Splint KEETER, Levy COVEY, Jane HUDSPETH, Bill EVANS, Goob and Florene SASSER, Alonzo and Billie YOUNG, Charles YOUNG and many more who knew and respected him and his family. I never knew him but have heard so much about his family. His brother, Braz CROW, bought my parents' home and orchard on Naches Heights in the late '5Os and later bought my brother's place when Gene moved from here to Eugene, Ore. Troy will be missed, especially in the farming community here. He was well respected.
Yakima Valley (Wash.) News by Frankie Seay Jan 15, #314 column: We lost another Marion County native and friend last week, Leona (DAVIS) SMELTZER, who lived in a nursing home in Wickenburg, Ariz., for the past few years. Before moving there she and her husband Ralph SMEITZER and their daughters Eula Mae SMELTZER and Mary TUTTLE lived here in Yakima Valley at Gleed, moving here from Marion County. Leona worked in the fruit warehouses until after Ralph's death, when she and Eula Mae moved to Arizona to be near Mary and her husband, Jake TUTTLE. Leona was such a well-liked person, always laughing, and that laughter was a family trait that can still be found in many of the younger DAVIS family. Besides her daughters, Leona is survived by her brothers Ewell DAVIS of Yakima and Odale DAVIS of Littie Rock, and a sister, Neville BOGLE of Harrison; Our sympathy to the family, she was a really nice lady who will be missed.
Aisle MARCHANT, 84, Washington Alsie Linna (MEARS) MARCHANT, 84, of Prosser, Wash., died there Jan. 27. She was born June 6, 1916, in Marion County to Ab and Charlotte (LANGSTON) MEARS. She married A.H. "Jack" MARCHANT Dec. 2, 1933, in Yeliville. They moved to Washington in 1954, where they farmed grapes, asparagus and apples. Ms. MARCHANT was a member of the Church of Christ in Sunnyside, Wash. She was devoted to her family and took great pride in her home. Survivors include her children, Retha AVEY of Puyallup, Lowell MARCHANT of Bull Shoals and Larry (and Marion) MARCHANT of Prosser; 11 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons and a granddaughter. [Additional Information: Mt. Echo Newspaper Feb 8, 2001 issue: Yakima Valley (Wash.) News column by Frankie Seay Jan 22, #315 and again Jan 29, #316: ] #315: The Marchant family came here in 1952 after all the kids were born in Arkansas. Retha is semi-etired, but works as a nanny for a doctor's family in Puyallup. We hope Alsie will be getting better by the next time we hear from her. # 316: The death of 84-year-old Alsie (Mears) Marchant, former Marion County resident, was not unexpected, as she had been in a hospital, then in Prosser Memorial Nursing Home for quite a while, but she will be missed by her three surviving children, Retha Avey, Lowell Marchant and Larry Marchant, as well as 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and other relatives. The family has my sympathy. I didn't know Alsie, but was reading up on her family (Mears) in my History of Marion County. I read again about William Blueford Mears, who I suppose was her uncle, who came to Arkansas as a small child, served in the Confederate Army, then had an accident (fell from his horse) in which his leg was so badly injured it had to be amputated. The surgery was done at home, using a kitchen knife and crosscut saw with little or no painkiller or an antibiotics. He lived over it, made and wore his own artificial leg, and lived to the ripe old age of 90. He was buried at Cowan Cemetery, where he had two graves, that of his leg, which he buried himself, and his own. This account doesn't say who did the surgery or give any details, but I'm sure it took a lot of strong brave men to perform all this, and the misery he went through we just can't imagine. Just another page in the history of Marion County that I find so interesting.

This is the second sister of that family to pass away in the last few months and some of the rest of the family are not doing too well, so we really feel for them. Eva (Strunk) Hankins is taking chemo and radiation for colon cancer and is doing some better now, and a brother, Leroy "Joe" Strunk,
of Sunnyside, Wash., has diabetes and needs help, so has moved into an assisted living apartment. The Strunk family lived in Marion County, north of Yellville, and at least three of the girls graduated from Y-SHS in 1943 and will be rememered there. This family has our sympathy in their loss and thanks to Ruby for her letter.
