Thema SMOTHERS GIBSON, 92, Flippin Thema SMOTHERS GIBSON, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, MO. She was born December 22, 1907 at Flippin, the daughter of George B. and Rebecca (RAE) SMOTHERS. She was united in marriage to Francis GIBSON on July 28, 1923. Mrs. GIBSON was a housewife and a member of the Yellville First Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, Lester GIBSON of Yellville, Delbert GIBSON of Bentonville, and Elmer GIBSON of Sand Springs, OK; three daughters, Lois DAVIDSON of Flippin, Hester SAPPLETON of Dunwoody, GA, and JoAnn FORREST of Harrison. Also surviving are three brothers, Eugene SMOTHERS of Jacksonville, Leo SMOTHERS of Broken Arrow, OK, and Hugh SMOTHERS of Grove, OK; one sister, Lucy YOUNG of Jenks, OK; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on January 6, 1985. Visitation was held Saturday, Nov. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services were held Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Terry Duffy officiating. Edna D. MARTIN, 80, Bull Shoals Edna D. MARTIN, age 80, passed away on November 1, 2000, at Baxter Regional Medical Center. She was born November 28, 1999, at Wood River, IL, the daughter of Elmer N. and Lillian (GOWANS) DIAL. She was united in marriage to John MARTIN on August 27, 1947 in Chicago, IL. She was Protestant. She was a retired secretary and a member of "Carefree" in Bull Shoals. She was also a member of the Moose organization, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Bull Shoals, and a life member of DAV. Mrs. MARTIN made her home in Bull Shoals in 1966, relocating from Chicago. She is survived by one son, Jerry KASINGER of Shaumburg, IL; one brother, Elmer J. DIAL of Lake Havasu, AZ; three sisters, Margaret CURTIS of West Plains, MO, Bonnie RINGERING of Bethalto, IL, Ruth STAIB of Highland Part, IL; two granddaughters, Karen and Janet KASINGER. Henry E. RATLIFF, 78, Yellville Henry E. RATLIFF, age 78, passed away at his residence on November 5, 2000. He was born on August 17, 1922, in Peoria, IL. He was united in marriage to Phyllis BROEG on November 7, 1945, in Peoria, IL. He was a retired printer. He was a member of the Bull Shoals Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Chapter 317, St. Joe. Elected to go to the West, 50 years Masonic Member, Eastern Star, Chapter 627, Leslie, Elected to go to the East as Worth Patron. He was a veteran having served in the Marine Corp, 1942 to 1946 in the South Pacific. Mr. RATLIFF is survived by two daughters, Mary HIGBEE and her husband, James of Cameron Park, CA, and Nancy CLIFFORD and her husband, Richard of Valparaiso, IN; a son-in-law, John AUGHEY; three grandsons, Matthew and Mark HIGBEE of Cameron Park, CA, and John AUGHEY of Creve Coeur, MO; and one granddaughter, Ellen SAMUELSON of Valparaiso, IN. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and one daughter, Carol RATLIFF AUGHEY. No visitation was held. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Corlis KIRKLAND, 59, Flippin Corlis KIRKLAND, 59, of Flippin, passed away Saturday, Nov 8, 2000, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home. He was born August 14, 1941, at Fairview, the son of Floyd C. and Myrtle L. (SWAN) KIRKLAND. He was a retired teacher, a member of the United Methodist Church, Optimist Club, and the Permian Bass Club, all in Odessa, TX. He is survived by his sons: Cameron KIRKLAND of Midland, TX, Lowell KIRKLAND and his wife, Debra of Odessa, TX; and one daughter, Charla SARVER and her husband, Sean of Spokane, WA. Also surviving are one brother, James W. KIRKLAND of Sweet Home, OR; four sisters, Betty WILSON, Nina WOOD, and Kay WOOD all of Flippin, and Velma MADONIA of Eureka, CA; one grandson, Alec, and one granddaughter, Celeste. Mr. KIRKLAND was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Glenda and Iva Jean. No visitation was held. Mt. Echo Newspaper, Nov 16, 2000 issue (Obituary Submitted): On Oct 28, the children of Lillian V. (OTT) MEARS had to give their wonderful, loving mother into he hands of the Lord our Savior. She will forever be with them all. She was born June 25, 1906, at Yellville, the daughter of Walter Martin and Janie Menerva (HOLLOWELL) OTT. She received her education in Yellville, where she later met and married Fred J. MEARS on Dec 23, 1923. They farmed in Yellville before going west in 1941 and settling on a farm near Givens Corner, Wash., near Mabton where they raised asparagus. She enjoyed raising flowers, working in her yard, crocheting and quilting. She looked forward to Sunday dinners where large numbers of family and friends would gather at the MEARS home. She was a member of the Grandview Garden Club. Ms. MEARS is survived by six children, Fred MEARS Jr. and wife Nancy and Guyla CROW of Mabton, Wash. Jim MEARS and wife Patricia and Dottie CLARK of Grandview, Wash., Bonnie COX and husband Harold of Pasco, Wash and Mary HIENLE and husband Walter of Salem, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Ralphe OTT of Mabton, Wash and Archie OTT of Moses Lake, Wash.; a sister Virginia SHROPSHIRE of Oklahoma; and is survived by her lifetime friend Eva CHEEk and by special friends and caregivers Delores and Blas NOREIGA and son Edgar and sister-in-law Alsie MARCHANT. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Fred; two grandchildren; one great granddaughter; two sons-in-law; a sister; and seven brothers. News, By Frankie Seay Nov 7 #304): Another lady I didn't know but who will be remembered in Marion County, Lillian V (OTT) MEARS, has died here and will be buried at Mabton, Wash. Lillian was born at Yellville in 1906, was educated there and Married Fred MEARS there in 1923. Fred died in 1979, also at Mabton, where Lillian continued to live until her death. She sounds like a nice lady and she and her family will be remembered there, as the OTT and MEARS families are well-known in Marion County. Her surviving family has my sympathy.

Ms. MCELROY was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, a member of the Delta Zeta Society and enjoyed writing and poetry. She was born at Harrison on Nov 14, 1961, the daughter of Marko Conrad "Rusty" and Frances Kay PHILLIPS HAYES. They survive her. Other survivors include her husband, Edward Elliott MCELROY of Yellville; her grandparents, Hazel and Earl PHILLIPS: two daughters, Kala Elizabeth MCELROY and Klancey Laine MCELROY; two stepdaughters, Sara Renee MCELROY and Mary Elizabeth MCELROY; and a brother Matthew Conrad HAYES. Graveside services were held Nov 11 at Maplewood Cemetery, with Bro. Derek Grigg officiating. He was born January 8, 1928, in Chicago, IL., the son of Einer and Olive (YEITER) MOSBECK. Mr. Mosbeck was united in marriage to Mildred MCGUIRE March 2, 1968 at Chicago. He was a former resident of Woodbridge, IL, having moved to Bull Shoals in 1982. He was a retired piping contractor for Mosbeck Industrial Equipment. He was Protestant. He was a member of the Builder's Tee Club in Chicago and the Rivercliff Golf League in Bull Shoals. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army in World War II. Mr. MOSBECK was an avid bridge player both in tournaments and on the internet. He is survived by his wife, Mildred; four daughters, Christine FINN and husband Jim of New York, Marjorie HUNT of Lake Zurich, IL, Jennifer MARTINKUS and husband Stan of Naperville, IL, Bonnie PELLEGRINO and husband Joe of Chicago, IL; on son, Douglas HUNT and wife Rhonda of Bolingbrook, IL. He is also survived by one sister, Lois BUTCHER and husband Ronald of Tarpon Springs, FL; 12 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and a close companion, his dog, "Oscar" He was preceded in death by his parents. Norma Jo HUDDLESTON, 83, Cotter Norma Jo HUDDLESTON, age 83, passed away at Twin Lakes Nursing Center in Flippin, on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000. She was born on May 30, 1917, at Cotter, the daughter of Henry and Myrtle (WEAVER) DISOTELL. She was united in marriage to Claude HUDDLESTON who preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1999. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Cotter. She is survived by five daughters, Judy WOOTEN and husband, Larry of Flippin, Karen HUDSON and husband, Donald of Flippin, Sharon TROGDON and husband, L. D. of Yellville, Dona HUNT and husband, Bill of Flippin, and Gail COCKRUM and husband, Burnie of Mountain Home. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Myrtle DISOTELL, her husband, Claude, one son, J. A. HUDDLESTON, and three sisters. She was born on Jan. 16, 1925, at Morgan County, Illinois, the daughter of Oliver A. and Ollie Francis (ROACH) MORRIS. She was united in marriage to Laron C. BROWN. She was a retired medical technician from the Bull Shoals Community Hospital. She was a member of the Bull Shoals Methodist Church. Nov 16, 2000 issue pg 6 (Yakima Valley (Wash.) News, By Frankie Seay Nov 7 #304): Another death we were sorry to hear about was Quentin SMITH, who died at Springfield. Quentin was a first cousin to my sisters Alma and Dorothy (ADAMS) BRISTOL, as well as to many others in Marion County, and a brother to Mary Frances CLEM, Wanda DOSHIER and Marcell PYLE. His parents, Ancil and Alie (PAGE) SMITH, were close friends to my parents, as well as Alie being a sister-in-law to my dad, as his first wife, Una, was a sister to Alie. They were at our house a lot when their kids were little and Quentin and my brother Gene were good friends when they grew up. His family has my sympathy.

News, By Frankie Seay Nov 7 #304): We read in the Boone County Headlight (thanks to Mary STONECIPHER) about the death of a former Marion County resident Willis MCMINDES, who died at Auburn, Calif. I didn't know him, but have heard through other people what a good person he was and I know his wife, Helen (CAVANESS / TURNEY) MCMINDES. I believe Helen and Willis sent to school together and graduated from Y-SHS, married other people years ago, then met each other after their spouses died, met at their class reunion in Yellville, and were married soon after. My Sympathy to Helen and to his family, some of them now living in Yakima.

A retired music teacher, she was born Mar 12, 1912, at Joliet, Ill., the daughter of Elizabeth Sophia (ROBERTS) and Willard Wesley TREXLER. Her husband, Harry J. HAUSSER, preceded her in death. Survivors include a cousin, Donald TREXLER of Visalia, Calif., and close friends Rudy and Anna Joyce PARNNELL of Grassville. She was born on January 10, 1917, at Milwaukee, Wi., the daughter of Martin and Anna Marie (BAUER) MALLEIER. She was united in marriage to Boyd Foster CLARK, who preceded her in death. Mt. Echo Newspaper, Nov 23, 2000 issue pg 3 "The Old Dillard Settlement" by Doretha Shipman: I attended Jeff Still's funeral Thursday. I had not seen him for some while. He had been in bad health and I believe was still living in Bentonville at the time of his death. We are never ready to give our people up. My love goes to all the family. Since we grew up together, there was a little story I remember about his daddy (Jeff called him Poppy, if I remember right). Once upon a time on a cold, blustery winder day it was milk time and my daddy Pate took the milk pail ... milk bucket, we called it ... and went down to the barn, got his milk stool - it might have been a bucket - sat down and began to squeeze the milk out of the old cow. His hands were cold and he had his hat on and collar turned up and I am sure was in deep thought. He couldn't hear well and Lonzo, who was Jeff's father, came up behind Daddy unobserved. He always walked slow and quietly. He had an earflap cap pulled down over his ears (he couldn't hear well either) and a long black coat on. All of a sudden he spoke pretty loud. The old cow had no hard time hearing Lonzo and in her fright gave a full grown kick, knocking the bucket of milk to smithereens and Daddy fell off the stool. I don't know what Daddy said, but I am sure their conversation continued with both Daddy and Lonzo holding their hands cupped behind their ears so they could understand each other. I think the cow had the remainder of that milking session discontinued
Stuart STANDISH Jr., 74, Mountain Home Stuart STANDISH, Jr., 74, of Mountain Home, passed away October 24, 2000, at Marion County Nursing Home in Yellville. He was born July 19, 1926, in Chicago, IL, the son of Stuart and Marila (WHITTLE) STANDISH, Sr. Mr. STANDISH was united in marriage to Pauline BAXTER in 1963 at Elgin, IL. He was a former resident of Ontarioville, IL, having moved to Mountain Home in 1986. He was self-employed in outboard motor repair. He was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War in Mountain Home. Survivors include one son, Stuart STANDISH III, and wife RoseAnne of Hobart, IN; one daughter, Lydia STANDISH of Lombard, IL; two step-sons, Al BAXTER and wife Bonnie of Elgin, IL, Doug BAXTER and wife Eileen of Wonder Lake, IL; and one step-daughter, Marjorie BROWN and husband Ronald of Wheaton, IL. Other survivors include one brother, Albert STANDISH of Indianapolis, IN; and one sister, Lora LAUDERDALE of Dallas, TX. He was grandfather to many and great-grandfather to one. Telia A. CHESTNUT, 84, Missouri Telia A. CHESNUT, age 84, of Cassville, Mo., formerly of Yellville, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 25th, 2000, in Springfield, Mo. She was born June 7, 1916, at Freck, Ar., the daughter of Lonzo and Virgie M. (SHERER) STILL. She was united in marriage to Walter CHESNUT. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing as a hobby. She is survived by four sons, Walter David CHESNUT of Rogers, Jessie Wayne CHESNUT of Rogers, Donald George CHESNUT of Pea Ridge, Edward James CHESNUT of Bentonville; two daughters, Sharon Kay WORLEY of Jacket, Mo., Brenda GREEN of Cassville, Mo. Other survivors include one brother, Elward STILL of Yellville; four sisters, Bernice HOLLIMAN of Gassville, Gladys MACUMBER of Yellville, Ruby TURNER of Centerton, Barbara LAWSON of Garfield; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Once again, memories come back to me of the Stills families of the past.
Once upon a time in the cold winter, Jim Stills, Telie's grandfather - who was not at all like the eagles to stay in one place and add to it, he moved all the time - decided to go to Oklahoma and wanted to go right now.
Daddy got the old ton-and-a-half truck fixed up to haul their belongings, with the children all bundled up to make the trip, and away they went. There wasn't a nice heater in the truck, front or back. Could we stand that now?
They made it out there and something was not pleasing to Jim. He said, 'Pate, I believe we will go back with you." I don't know if he went back to the same place he had left, found another empty house or had Grandpa Dillard build one the next day.
I think of the family every time I cross the Buffalo River Bridge on Hwy. 14. Up the hill, about halfway, they lived in a little house, very close to the highway dirt road. It was so appealing to me, and I don't know why and I can't imagine building there now. Perhaps he was before his time, because now people build on the steepest hills and it's beautiful.
I must say the Stills house was located with a beautiful screen over the mountains. It was in a good trapping, hunting and fishing location, and in the summer there was work to be done on the river farms.
His wife, being a quiet, meek little woman, I'm sure was not like Mrs. Eagle to dispute his judgement about the least thing as long as she lived.
Once again, our sympathy is with all you sisters, brother, friends and other relatives. Life just has a way of going on.
David BREMER, 15, Yellville David Bremer, age 15, passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at St. John's Medical Center in Springfield, Mo. He was born November 10, 1985, in Arizona. David was an eighth grade student at Yellville-Summit Middle School. He was a member of the Yellville-Summit Band and the Yellville-Summit Football and Baseball teams. He is survived by his mother, Lillian COLEMAN; three brothers, Kenneth ABEL, Berryville, Chris CAMERON and Timothy BAILEY, both of Yellville; three sisters, Blenda BAILEY, Brittney BAILEY, and Rebecca BAILEY, all of Yellville; and his grandmother, Evelyn COLEMAN, of Yellville. Visitation was held Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Burns Funeral Home Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Burns Funeral Home. Dr. Frederick TURNER, 58, Mountain Home (Photo accompanies the obituary) Dr. Frederick C. TURNER, age 58, passed away at Cox Medical Center-South on Nov. 28, 2000. The son of Frederick C. and Gladys (BEATTIE) TURNER, Sr., he was born on March 14, 1942, at New London, Ct. Dr. TURNER was united in marriage to Patricia KEELING on Nov. 1, 1994, in Mountain Home. He was a former resident of Columbia, Mo., originally from Lake Jackson, Tx., and had made his home in Mountain Home since 1977. He was a medical doctor and served as a doctor in the United States Navy during Vietnam. He earned his BS Degree from Providence University, Providence RI, his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Internal Medicine Residence at University of Missouri Medical Center, Columbia, Mo., and Fellowship in Gastroenterology, Boston Veterans Administration Hospital, Boston, Ma. Dr. TURNER was an avid hunter and a motorcycle enthusiast. He enjoyed scuba diving, hiking, and photography. He had multiple black belts in the martial arts. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two daughters, Kristin TURNER COCHRAN and husband, David of Austin, Tx., Dr. Jennifer TURNER RAGSDALE and husband, Jim of Columbia, Mo.; one step-son, Grover SHIPMAN of Little Rock; three grandchildren, Frederick Ryan COCHRAN of Austin, Thomas Scott COCHRAN, of Austin, and Kaitlyn Marie RAGSDALE of Columbia. Also surviving are his father, Dr. Frederick C. TURNER, Sr. of Lake Jackson, Tx.; three brothers, John TURNER and wife, Margaret of Westerly, RI, Jim TURNER and wife, Cheryl of Palm Springs, Ca., and David TURNER and wife, Laura of Rowlett, Tx., one sister, Claire JONES of Oakhurst, Il.; several nieces and nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother. Visitation was held Friday, Dec 1 from 12 until 8 p.m. at Kirby-Boaz Funeral Home. Harold W. ROARK, 81, Yellville Harold W. ROARK, Age 81, passed away at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, on Wed., November 29, 2000. He was born Nov. 1, 1919, at Pyatt, the son of Arch Johnson and Daisy (ESTES) ROARK. He was united in marriage to Jessie PRICE on Dec. 21, 1940. He was a distributor for Mobil Oil Company and a previous owner of the White Sands Motel and Restaurant. He was also a cattle rancher. He was a veteran having served in United States Navy in WWII and the United States Army in Korea. Survivors include his wife, Jessie ROARK; one daughter, Betty MORROW and her husband, Tommy of Yellville; his mother, Daisy ROARK; one sister, Katholeen DOSHIER of Springfield, Mo.; two grandsons, Randy and wife, Nidia, who is serving in the United States Air Force in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Kirk, of Valliant, Ok.,; and three granddaughters Nikki, Pam, and Ali MORROW. Mr. ROARK was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Rudell ROARK. Visitation was held Friday, Dec. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home. Everyone is so saddened 'to hear of the death of Harold Roark. That family has had more than they should have to bear and we heard today that Harold's mother, Daisy, has somehow hurt her back and is living with her daughter Katholeen Doshier in Spring field, MO. I'm hoping that is a rumor and that Daisy is a! right but we'll find out later I guess. Both Harold and his daughter, Betty Morrow, called me after Jessie was attacked by a dog and was in such bad condition afterward. They're such a nice family and lived at Pyatt when we did in the early 30s and all knew each other then. My brother knew Harold and Jessie when they were growing up and he got to have a good visit with Harold when they went back to Turkey Trot a couple of years ago. Our thoughts are with this nice family during their sorrows.
Venita P. TAYLOR, 82, Eros Venita P. TAYLOR, age 82, Eros, passed away at Hillcrest Home in Harrison, Thursday, November 30, 2000. The daughter of Bascum and Lela (BROWN) PHILLIPS was born at Eros on March 19, 1918. She was a homemaker and had worked during World War II at the Cessna and McDonnell-Douglas Airplane Factories in Wichita. She was a member of Everton Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Gillis Phil TAYLOR of Eros, her daughter, Lela Diane TAYLOR of Eros, a brother, Coy PHILLIPS of Bruno, and a sister, Irene TAYLOR of St. Joe, two step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild, and Tommy and Pat CASTLEBERRY, whom she loved as her own children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Olen Gillmore TAYLOR, and a brother, Ray PHILLIPS. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, at Everton Baptist Church with Bro. Nellie LONG, Former resident (Obituary Submitted) Nellie COVEY LONG of Yakima, Wash., died there recently. She was born Dec 6, 1914 in Yellville to Thomas and Martha (MATLOCK) COVEY. She worked for the Donut Shop as a waitress for many years and enjoyed bowling, card games and crocheting. She also enjoyed playing basketball in her high school years. Nellie was very talented in playing guitar and singing. She is survived by her brother, Levy COVEY of Yakima, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin LONG; three brothers, Bill, Clyde and Ray COVEY; and five sisters, Euna EVANS, Ora SUMMERS, Cecil TUCKER, Vena SNIPES and Wilma CUNNINGHAM. We had a good family week end, even though it included attending the funeral of our old friend Nellie (Covey) Long. Gene and Mavis went from Eugene to the Tri Cities to see their granddaughter Merrick Adams in her senior play, where she had one of the leading, then to Yakima Saturday morning in time for Nellie's funeral. Nellie was a member of two of we best known and respected families of Marion County, the Matlocks and Coveys. All of Tom and Martha (Matlock) Covey's 10 children have passed away except Levy, who lives here on Naches Heights. They were all born and raised in Marion County, went to school at and graduated from Y-SHS before moving to Yakima, where most lived until their deaths, including their parents. I saw lots of old friends at Nellie's service, though she had been living at a home for Alzheimer's patients the last few years. Some I remember seeing were Virginia Mae (Briggs) Klein and Hazel (Briggs) King. Goob and Florene Sasser, Ken and Barbara Hudson, Moleen Cline, Hazel Parker and I met Coy Summers' son for the first time. He was a pallbearer for his great aunt Nellie. There were many more than I can't recall right now, but I know there were many of us who knew the Covey family in Arkansas and here and they have our sympathy.
