Mountain Echo Newspaper, Yakima Valley (Wash.) News by Frankie Seay, Week of May 17, 2001 issue: Another place I went this week was to Roy WILMOTH'S funeral and the house was full of Arkansawyers. The chapel was so crowded that I couldn't begin to see everybody, but I talked to Hoyt and Belle BROWN, Lorene (Alexander?), CONLEY and Erma BILLINGS, Betty SOUTHARDS, Billie and Alonzo YOUNG, Tobe and Eula COKER, Earl WICKERSHAM Jr. and his wife, and I didn't see Denva (SMITH) FETZER, but I heard she was in the group of singers who did such a great job with familiar old songs. Denva is descended from good singers, her mother, Bertha, was a DAVENPORT and her father, Seran SMITH, was also from a musical family. I remember my mother telling about what good singers the SMITH boys were when they were young and going to church and singing everywhere there was a gathering around Bruno and the Greasy Creek area. So many people from Arkansas getting together usually means a funeral, but Roy wouldn't have minded. He loved a good gathering and he came from a big family and I think all of them were there-his surviving brother, Otis WILMOTH and his wife Bessie, plus all the nieces, nephews and grandkids and so many of Roy and Fern's friends they've made since coming out here. Fern is living at Alterra, an assisted living complex on Englewood Ave. here in town and seems to be doing fairly well. After 77 years of marriage to Roy she's bound to be lonesome, but she loves her new home, has children living here and also has her little dog with her, so she'll be all right.
Mountain Echo Newspaper Week of May 17, 2001 issue: A 16-year-old Gassville boy being held in a state juvenile lockup has died after apparently hanging himself, authorities said. James Daniel BAUMBACH died early Sunday, May 13, 2001, at the Alexander Youth Services Center in Saline County, said Artee WILLIAMS, deputy director of the State Department of Human Services' Division of Youth Services. "Obviously, it's a tragedy," said Gary ISBELL, circuit-chancery juvenile judge for Baxter and Marion counties. "We do not send kids down to the Department of Youth Services with the anticipation that they won't come back better than they went down." "He was a great kid," ISBELL said Monday, May 14. He declined to give any information about the boy's court records. State officials would not comment on the boy's records, citing confidentiality laws regarding juvenile offenders. BAUMBACH was in the center's Juvenile Upward Mobility Program unit (JUMP) for serious offenders. ISBELL said the teenager had spent some time at the ALEXANDER Lockup then returned to Baxter County. But he was sent back to ALEXANDER when he showed he "couldn't live by the rules," the judge said. He said, "To find out he's now deceased is a tragedy. I don't know how best to respond to the death until I get the facts. A center employee found BAUMBACH'S body at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, WILLIAMS said. "Emergency personnel were summoned, but efforts to revive the youth were unsuccessful," said Jerry EVANS, Youth Services assistant director in a press release. The JUMP unit has 24 beds divided into three pods. Each child has his own room. Arkansas State Police are investigating the boy's death. In addition, the Department of Human Services is conducting an administrative inquiry, WILLIAMS said. One employee at the center was placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigations, authorities said.

The accident occurred at 10:22 a.m. when a 1995 GMC pickup driven by Selena COGNEVICH, 56, of Pyatt crossed in front of a Rail America Missouri Northern Arkansas train at Third Street, according to Flippin Police Chief Frank DEPRIEST. DEPRIEST said it had not been determined whether the two women saw the approaching train as they crossed the track. He said the truck was pushed down the track approximately 347 feet. DEPRIEST said the women had more than likely taken Hwy. 202 from Yellville to Hwy. 178 into Flippin and traveled south past the school, turning onto Third Street to reach Hwy. 62 in order to avoid highway work that was being done near the Hwy.62/178 intersection. COGNEVICH and ALBERS were transported to Baxter Regional Medical Center at Mountain Home and LABERS was transferred to Little Rock. COGNEVICH remains at the Baxter medical center, listed in good condition, according to hospital personnel. DEPRIEST said member of the Flippin, Rea Valley and Yellville Fire Departments, the Flippin Police Department and the ambulance crew worked together to remove the victims from the vehicle and otherwise assist at the scene. He said response time was within seconds due to the location of the accident, noting that the fire department and police station are located on Third Street next to the railroad track. Yellville Fire Chief Billy Joe EVANS said everyone worked together as a team to remove the victims from the vehicle. According to Chief DEPRIEST, the accident is still under investigation.
