Yakima Valley (Wash.) News by Frankie Seay - May 15, 2000 # 280: Our family lost another member last week, our cousin Ruby (ADAMS) HOWSER was born May 22, 1928, to my uncle Shelby and aunt Bertha (MARTIN) ADAMS when they lived at Pyatt. She passed away May 10 at Versailles, Mo., where she lived for many years. She was buried at Versailles May 13 and leaves four children, three sons and a daughter, and is also survived by siblings Estel, Lloyd and Elva (and I think another brother Claude). Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, a son who passed away a few years ago, her husband, who was killed in an industrial accident at work a few years ago, as well as a sister, Iva PURDOM, and three brothers, Ralph. Leo and Fred ADAMS. Ruby had a quadruple bypass surgery just last month. She was closest cousin in age to me, almost exactly two months older than me, and I mainly remember her as being the one I always played with when our families visited, but that wasn't often because her family moved to Missouri when we were very young and I never saw her again, but I always knew she was there and felt a tie to her because of our age. Now I feel a little lonely knowing she's gone. My sympathy to her family in he loss of their youngest sister, as well as her children and grandchildren.
"The Old Dillard Settlemen" by Doretha Dillard Shipman": I am heartbroken about the news I had last week. Rose called and said our beloved Aunt Kate (REEVES) died May 12. She was 107 years old. She was a very special person and here I know we have lost a treasure. Aunt Kate's mother was Harriet DILLARD, Grandpa Doc's sister. I am reminded of a son we have sung many times at funerals: "We Are Going Down the Valley One by One". And we are. I think I have some of the things I have heard of Aunt Kate. Once upon a time here in the Ozarks wild animals were a part of our diet, which was the case with Kate's family. Her family would catch possum and coon; she always cooked sweet potatoes with this dainty dish. When they went down to the river or creeks, crawdads were gathered up and another feast was at hand. Aunt Kate would say, "The good old days." I have heard how hard she worked on hog killing days and picking cotton, peas, beans and corn and hoeing in the fields. Her work was hard in every way and in her spare time, from the "have to, to eat," she washed the clothes outside in a big black pot with soap she made from the port fat she had rendered out at hog killing time. Yes, Aunt Kate is gone, and so are the ways in which we lived once upon a time.
