Mountain Echo Newspaper Week of September 20, 2001 issue: A 40-year-old Sparta, Mo., man drowned in Bull Shoals Lake at Peel on Wednesday, September 12, 2001. According to Sheriff Carl MCBEE, Russell SLOSS was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Marion County Coroner Keith BARNES. The sheriff said his office received a call from North Arkansas Regional Medical Center at Harrison at 11:34 a.m. requesting a deputy at the 125 Boat Dock at Peel for a possible drowning. Paramedics and EMTs from NARMC's Diamond City base arrived frist at the scene and reported to the deputy that a monitor was placed on SLOSS to no avail. SLOSS' brother said he had been scuba diving and SLOSS asked to play around with the scuba gear while his brother wasn't using it. The brother said SLOSS was in about 10 feet of water and everything seemed fine, so the brother went inside a houseboat to get a glass of milk. He then came back out and waited and when SLOSS did not resurface, his brother went to 125 Boat Dock for help. The owner of 125 Boat Dock, Rick MORGAN, recovered SLOSS' body about 15 minutes after entering the water, the sheriff said. The body was found in about 25 feet of water, approximately 75 feet from the back of the houseboat. It was reported that the body was found near the scuba gear, which Morgan also recovered, as if SLOSS tried to slip it off so he could surface. According to his brother, SLOSS had a history of strokes. The body was sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, the sheriff said.
