10/28/1820 Caution All persons are hereby notified, that one Thomas Peterkin, by his notice in the "Arkansas Gazette" of the 26th of September last, offers for sale some "valuable lands" that are not, never were, and never will be his; and particularly the tract of 400 arpens joining the Mississippi, on which he states that I, Sylvanus Phillips, now reside. This Thomas Peterkin has been, for some time, at this place, endeavoring to sell his pretended land claims; but his titles are too well known here for him to effect a sale at any price. He will now, probably endeavor to sell to persons at a distance, who know nothing of his title, for which reason this caution is published. The tract of land on which I live, and which I own, has been unconditionally confirmed by an act of Congress of the 29th of April, 1816; and has since been surveyed accordingly, under the authority of the United States.Peterkin's claim being ascertained to be unfounded; has been rejected as such; so that both claims have been decided as above, by the only tribunal made competent by law to adjudicate thereon.Mr. Peterkin, in his advertisement, admits my claim to be confirmed, and that his has been rejected; so that, from his own showing, he is offering to sell lands that do not belong to him.Sylvanus PhillipsArkansas, October 26, 1820

03/02/1824 OBITUARY [Communicated]The feelings of regret and sorrow, felt at the departure of a valued friend, may sometimes be suspected of pourtraying in too high colors, the merits and virtues of that friend. He who is the subject of this notice, having possessed many of the estimable qualities of our nature, the writer of this will not be suspected of exaggeration, by those who had the pleasure of an intimate acquaintance with him in his lifetime.Died, at his residence at Hopefield, Phillips County, A.T. on the 27th December 1823, Benjamin Fooy, Esq. supposed to have been about 65 years of age. Mr. Fooy was a native of Holland, and came in early life to America. Some 30 years ago he settled in the vicinage of Hopefield, and during the greater part of that time, resided on his farm at that place. Until within a few years previous to his death, Mr. Fooy was almost constantly engaged in the service of the Territory in which he lived, either as a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, or as a magistrate of his county. In the performance of the duties of these offices, he never failed to afford that satisfaction, which a general accuracy of decision is calculated to ensure. But it is in the private walks of life, that the intrinsic value of character is to be sought, and there indeed, the amiable character of the deceased appears peculiarly conspicuous. In addition to all those endearing qualities which constitute the fond husband, indulgent father, and good citizen, the deceased possessed in a rare and eminent degree, that generous philanthropy and hospitality so grateful to the object of distress, and to the stranger; and which, upon the banks of the Mississippi, tended essentially to the benefit of the orphan, and to the comfort of the way-worn, and often times diseased, traveller. But, alas! He who delighted in doing good to his fellow beings is no more. He has gone to receive that just reward which a life here below cannot give - leaving behind him a large family, to bewail a loss which to them is irreparable.

10/07/1828 MURDER - We learn, by gentlemen from St Francis county, that a murder, of a most atrocious character, was perpetrated in that county, on the night of the 23d ult. on the body of Mr. Burrell Jones. On that night, a short time after Mr. and Mrs. Jones had retired to bed, two men, on horseback, called at the house, (representing, themselves to be travelers) and inquired if they could procure lodgings there for the night. Mr. Jones and his wife got up and went to the door, and after speaking with them and inviting them to alight from their horses, Mr. J. stepped into the yard, for the purpose of picking up some wood to kindle a fire. When within a few steps of the supposed travelers, one of them snapped his gun at him, and the other fired, and shot him through the body. Mr. Jones staggered to the door, where his wife was standing, exclaimed "I am killed" and fell. The murderers then exchanged a few words with each other, in a low voice, when one of them observed "We have killed him - let's be off." They immediately started and made off at a gallop.Mr. Jones survived until the evening of the following day, when he expired. Before his death, he made oath before a magistrate, that the persons who murdered him were Dr. Charles C.P. Welch, and Grabel Lincecum, (both neighbors of Mr. J.) but he could not say positively which of them gave him the fatal wound. The murderers, finding that they were suspected, decamped on the following morning. Lincecum fled towards Batesville, but a party were in pursuit of him, and hopes were entertained that he would be overtaken and arrested. Welch took the road towards White River, and is has been ascertained that he passed in through the prairie to the Cherokee nation, where we understand, he was seen a few days ago. He told a person with whom he stopped in the prairie, that he was going to the Cherokee nation, and from thence to the Spanish Country.Welch and Mr. Jones had had a slight difference a few days previous to the murder, but it was not supposed to be of a serious nature. No difference was known to exist between Mr. J. and Lincecum.

12/01/1830 [The following has been sent to us for publication as an Advertisement, and is charged for as such.]TO THE PUBLIC JOHN JOHNSON This individual, who is now Judge of the County Court of St. Francis , has thought proper to assail the Postmaster at St. Francis, with imputations of midemanor in office, highly prejudicial to his character. The annexed copy of a letter from the Post Office Department, contains a list of complaints made by him to the Postmaster General; the object of which charges, will appear to the reader, to reference in the annexed letters and certificates. I am induced to believe, every candid observer will agree with myself, that the whole affair is a groundless, maliciously fabricated little underhanded business in his honor. And had he succeeded in the object of his undertaking, the profit of the office he would have acquired, surely would not have been equal to, or have balanced against, the infamy such conduct must bring down on him. That a man of his property would attempt to lie himself into a pitiful office, which would bring him in debt, and create enemies, and that, too, at the expense of a man, who has never, either directly or indirectly, injured or attempted to injure him in character or property, is, to me, altogether unaccountable. And that a man, who has so long had the confidence of the people, as to be elected by them in a seat in the councils of the Territory, should have the vanity and ignorance to suppose an officer of the government would be dissolved from officer, merely for his representation, without an investigation, is no less strange. This must, without doubt, have been his calculations, or he would not have ran the risk of so many unwarrantable and round assertations. It is, with me, a matter of regret, to be brought to the necessity of taking this course, more especially, as it is the first time.John T. FosterPost Office DepartmentOffice of Appointments, April 2, 1830
10/30/1830 CAUTION ALL persons are hereby cautioned against trading for, or taking an assignment of, a note, executed by me, in the year 1829, in favor of James W. Love, for one hundred dollars, payable in the year 1831, at Wm. Strong's on the St. Francis. As said note was fraudulently obtained, I do not intend paying it.James WrightMouth of Cache, September 10, 1830

The St. Francis river admits of uninterrupted navigation for the largest steam-boats a distance of three hundred miles. The high land on this side of the St. Francis extends, in width about thirty eight miles and in length, from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and promises to become a country of wealth and importance. The county in which Franklin is situated, in general, is considered equal, if not superior, in fertility of soil, and natural advantages, to any in the Territory. Its population is increasingly rapidly, and has already, though young, reached upwards of 1500 enterprizing and industrious citizens, chiefly from Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Alabama, whose labors are richly rewarded by the abundance of their crops of cotton, wheat, corn, rice, and tobacco. 03/02/1830 A man by the name of James Hartley was brought to this place, in irons, on Sunday evening last, by the Sheriff of St. Francis County, and committed to Jail. We understand he is charged with murder of a man named McCloud, in the State of Mississippi, some time last autumn; and has been apprehended by order of the Acting Governor of this Territory, on the requisition of the Governor of the State of Mississippi, to which State he will be sent for trial by the first opportunity that offers of sending him down the river. We hope this prompt instance of the apprehension of a fugitive from justice will have some effect in redeeming the character of our Territory from the charge of its being a harbor for rogues and out-laws; and we hope it may operate as a warning to murderers and other fugitives from justice, not to look for a refuge in Arkansas, if they wish to escape the punishment which is their due, for the violation of the laws of their country.

He was a respectable and honorable man, dearly beloved by those who knew him well, and his death is deeply lamented by all his neighbors and acquaintances. A faithful public servant, he had filled many offices of trust, with credit to himself and advantage to the state in which he resided. He emigrated to this Territory only a few years since, and although his stay here was of short duration, the urbanity of his manners, the frankness of his disposition, and the generosity of his soul, created for him many of the warmest friends. Proverbially hospitable, his house was a thoroughfare for all who shared his esteem.May 4th, 1831

10/31/1832 CHOLERA!!!! - AT LAST!--- Several physicians were called on Sunday night, to attend a case, supposed to be one of the prevailing epidemic. It was a gentleman of St. Francis county, Arkansas, (Austin Kendrick, Esq.) who was on his return immediately from Philadelphia. Though the premonitory symptoms manifested themselves previous to his departure from Philadelphia, he was not taken violently ill, until the night after his arrival at this place. On Monday morning he was taken to the hospital, but did not survive more than an hour.
10/24/1832 DIED - At Memphis, very suddenly, on Monday, the 15th inst., AUSTIN KENDRICK, Esq., Clerk of the Circuit Court of St. Francis County, in the twenty-seventh year of his age. He reached that place only the evening previous, on his return home, after an absence of several weeks in Philadelphia and other eastern cities - ate a hearty supper - was attacked at 11 o'clock the same night - and died about 6 o'clock the following morning. We understand his attending physician pronounced the disease with which he died, to be the Cholera; and we have conversed with several gentlemen (two of whom are physicians) who passed through Memphis since his death, and they all concur in stating that the symptoms of his case bore every mark of that terrible disease.
10/24/1832 Appointment by the Governor - William Strong, to be Clerk of the Circuit Court of St. Francis County, vice Austin Kendrick, deceased.
10/17/1832 DIED - In Saint Francis county, on the 6th of October, Van Buren, infant son of Green B. Lincecum, Esq. after an illness of four weeks. Thus, in this pure and innocent child, has cruel death torn from the dear and fonding caresses of the most devoted Father and Mother, the dearest object of their affection. But ah! Why should they weep and mourn, when it has escaped the cares and sorrows of this world, and departed, in its lovely innocence, to the welcome arms of its Savior! - Communicated

04/04/1832 AGENTS FOR THE GAZETTE Wm. Strong - St. Francis C.H.
03/21/1832 For the Arkansas Gazette-William Stephenson, was hung, in St. Francis county, on the 7th Ult., agreeable to sentence, for the crime of Horse Stealing. This wretched man has been in custody since last summer, under three several indictments, viz: Horse- Stealing, Burglary, and Forgery, and, at a special term of the Circuit Court, held the first Monday of January, Judge Bates, presiding, - he was tried on the first indictment, found guilty, and sentenced to be hung. Some excitement was produced and considerable sympathy felt for his fate, but such was his general character, that none were inclined to claim for him the Executive clemency, consequently the awful sentence of the law was carried into effect, and was witnessed by a large portion of the citizens, with a profound respect for the dignity of the laws. When he was brought from his place of confinement to the gallows, his wretched appearance aroused an involuntary exclamation of "poor wretch!" Many hearts were softened to the melting point until the wretched criminal began to disclose some of his horrid deeds. In addition to the crime for which he was about to suffer, he acknowledged having taken the life of three of his fellow creatures - one in New Orleans, one on the Mississippi river, and another in this Territory - to some of which he pretended to plead justification, and the right he ought not to suffer death for the for the crime of which he was convicted. He claimed of the Sheriff the last moments, and a strong hope of relief was visible in his countenance until the last. The drop fell at one and a half minutes before the expiration of the time, and the wretched man was launched into Eternity, praying to his God for pardon. Some doubts had existed as to his real name, and initials on his arms were examined and found to differ from the name he has borne. On the right arm was the capitals "P.P. & W.A." and the emblem of liberty, and one the left, was "W.A.S.P." His struggle in death was uncommonly severe, and offered singular phenomena. The pulse was sixty to the minute, at eight minutes, and very distinct at thirteen minutes, after the drop fell.A BY-STANDERFebruary 18, 1832

8/8/1838 DOCTOR JOHN SAPPINGTON'S ANTI-FEVER PILLS ARE OFFERED TO THE PUBLIC FOR SALE MANY thousands who have take those pills are ready to testify of their great superiority over any other medial preparation ever offered to the American people in the care of FEVERS OF ALL KINDS. An importing recommendation to this medicine, is, that it cures fevers without sickening or prostrating the patient at all - that it effects a cure in less time than any other medicine heretofore known - and that the patient can then pursuehis ordinary business, without loss of time from prostration of debility.Persons traveling (especially on steam-boats) should always provide themselves with it, and those living in sickly sections of country should use it as directed in the envelopment, to prevent attacks of fever. The following persons have been appointed agents for the sale of the abovemedicine in the State of Arkansas, viz: In St. Francis county T.
