Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 12, 2007 issue: Claire E. SCOLTOCK, age 89, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007 in McMinnville, Oregon. Mrs. SCOLTOCK was born in Spokane, Washington on July 19, 1917 the daughter of Howard and Alice Emily MCMILLAN WILSON. She grew up in Spencer, Iowa and graduated from Iowa State in 1939 with a degree in dietetics. On September 3, 1939, she married Joseph SCOLTOCK in Spencer, Iowa. During WWII she lived in Los Angeles and after the war moved back to Spencer, Iowa. She moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1960 where she and her husband owned and operated the A.B. C. Construction Directory. In 1970 the Scoltocks retired and moved moved to Yellville, Arkansas. Mr. SCOLTOCK died in 1986. In 1990 she moved to McMinnville, Oregon to be near her son. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Peo. She was a member of a writing group in McMinnville and has written several books. She loved dogs, hiking and writing. The family said "Claire was a genuine treasure; her humor, zest for life, inquiring mind and authenticity leave a wonderful legacy for her family." Survivors include her son of McMinnville, OR; a sister of Hadley, MA; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph in 1986; sons, Hugh SCOLTOCK in 1984 and Jim SCOLTOCK in 2002; brother John WILSON and sister Jean BAILY. A memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor John Ailstock officiating. Burial will be in the Layton Cemetery in Yellville. Arkansas. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 5, 2007 issue: Marion Ray LOWE, age 75, of Yellville, Arkansas died Monday, April 2, 2007 at the Hospice House in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Mr. LOWE was born December 9, 1931 at Palmyra, Missouri the son of Lawrence and Lorene CHATFIELD LOWE. He attended high school in San Diego, California and graduated in 1949. After graduation, he entered the U.S. military service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country in the Korean War. After his discharge, he resided in Pekin, Illinois where he retired after being a firefighter for the Pekin Fire Department, Civil Defense instructor for 25 years, boy Scouts leader for 36 years and Red Cross instructor for 15 years. Formerly of Pekin, Mr. LOWE and his wife have been residents of Yellville, Arkansas for the past 28 years. Mr. LOWE served on the Yellville City Council form March 1, 1999 until December 31, 2006 and was a local police office in Marion County for two years. Survivors include his wife of Yellville, AR; three sons, one of Waynesville, MO, one of Pekin, IL and one of Clarksville, MO; a daughter of Pekin, IL; a brother of Emmett, ID, a sister of Ponte Verda Beach, FL; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. His parents and brother, Kenneth Dale LOWE, preceded him in death. Visitation was held at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2007 at Burns Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Bill Canary officiating. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 5, 2007 issue: Alice Mae NIXON JOHNSON, age 84, of Yellville Arkansas died Monday, April 2, 2007 at the Hospice House in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Mrs. JOHNSON was born September 10, 1922 at Drummond, Oklahoma the daughter of Russell and Edna CONGER NIXON. She moved to Yellville, Arkansas in 1977 with her husband Mack, and was involved in many activities including being a member of the Marion County Home Extension Club, quilting with the American Legion Tuesday Ladies Auxiliary in Yellville and the Senior Centers in both Marion County, Arkansas and Vici, Oklahoma. Mrs. JOHNSON was also involved with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for a member of years. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have received a quilt she made. The Tuesday Ladies Auxiliary finished her final quilt. Her hands and mind were always busy sewing, doing crossword puzzles or cryptoquotes or reading. She loved nature, gardening and planting flowers and knew the names of many plants, trees, birds and wildlife. In later years, she was the she caregiver for her mother-in-law, parents and husband. Her quiet assurance was a testimony to her unselfish and non-complaining nature. She was faithful member of the Main Street Church of Christ of Yellville. Survivors include her two sons and their wives, one of Decatur, IL and one of Stillwater, OK; two daughters one and her husband of Paxton, IL and one of New Braunfels, TX; two sisters one of Gainesville, TX and one of Burlington, MI: 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Her parents; husband, H.M. JOHNSON; son, Danny Lee; and brother, Duane NIXON preceded her in death. Visitation will be Thursday, April 5, 2007 at the Main Street Church of Christ in Yellville from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Sunny Side Cemetery Vici, Oklahoma. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 12, 2007 issue: Frederick John SVENDSEN, age 74, died April 6, 2007 following a brief and courageous battle against cancer. Mr. SVENDSEN was born on April 29, f1932, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Carl and Rose SVENDSEN. His scholastic success led to a scholarship to Creighton Prep High School and to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. He would eventually study medicine at Creighton University and graduate from the University of Arkansas for the Medical Sciences with a Doctor of Medicine in June 1957. Following graduation, he received his commission as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. During his internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bethesda, he met a nurse on staff and fell in love. They were marrid on June 21, 1958 and have been together ever since. Mr. SVENDSEN was awarded his Naval Flight Surgeon Wings while stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Station. As chief medical officer at the Naval Auxiliary Landing Field School in El Centro, California he provided critical medical support to ongoing parachute and escape vehicle research and development programs. A late overseas assignment included a tour with the Naval Carrier Air Group II aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Midway. In 1962 Fred transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserves resigning as a Lieutenant Commander in September 1968. In April 1963, Dr. SVENDSEN and his family moved to Yellville Arkansas where he opened up a family practice and practiced for 15 years. The fast pace of the emergency room better fit his style of medicine and by 1978 Fred was treating critically-ill patients in a number of emergency rooms in hospitals scattered across the state of Arkansas. He soon gained a reputation as being a no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase clinician and given a faculty appointment at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. In 1988, he attained his board certification as a specialist in emergency medicine meeting the highest educational, professional standing and examination standards certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Meanwhile, Dr. and Mrs. SVENDSEN began to spend more time at their home in Culebra. He saw that the inhabitants of this little island off the coast of Puerto Rico lacked adequate health care so he sought a license to practice medicine in Puerto Rico. He worked tirelessly tending to the health care needs of the island at the Centro de Salud and was soon affectionately known across the island as "Doctor Fred". In 2002, they moved back to Arkansas and settled in Springhill, Arkansas to be closer to family. In 2006, Fred finally relinquished his medical license after nearly 50 years of providing active care to thousands of patients. Curing the ill, saving untold lives and bringing hundreds of children into ths wonderful world - he successfully fulfilled his mission in the service of others for the greater glory in God. Survivors include his wife; four sons and their spouses, one of Omaha, NE, one of Little Rock, AR, and son, one of Sandy, UT; a daughter and her husband of Glen Falls, NY; a son and his wife of Greenbrier, AR; fifteen grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law of Omaha, NE; and his sister of Omaha, NE and sister and her husband of Omaha, NE; untold number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary. A memorial celebration of the life of Fred SVENDSEN will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at his home in Springhill, AR. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit and participate in celebrating his life. A separate memorial is planned in Culebra later this summer. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name at St. Vincent Health System. Please express your love and consideration to the Dr. Fred J. Mr. HORTON was born September 7, 1949 at Marshall, Arkansas. He was a retired employee of the Arkansas Highway Transportation Department. Mrs. OWENS died Sunday, April 15, 2007 at Baxter Regional Medical Center at the age of 69. She was born May 19, 1937, the daughter of Robert and Geraldine DEVINE. She was the office manager of Lake River Land Realty and former branch manager for the Bank of Yellville. She owned and operated Driftwood Resort and was a former realtor. He whole life was spent serving and helping others. She enjoyed playing music, singing and attended Community Bible Church and First Baptist Church at Bull Shoals. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Stanley G. STOUT, Sr. and Elery W. OWENS. She is survived by 1 daughter of Bull Shoals; 1 son of Johnston, Iowa; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 1 brother; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend of Bull Shoals. Mr. HOFFMAN served with the US Army during World War II and he was a pressroom supervisor at GTE Directory for 34 years. He had resided in the Bull Shoals area since moving from Westmont, Illinois in 1988. He was a member of Bull Shoals Senior Citizens Club, Mountain Home Seventh Day Adventist Church and enjoyed fishing, stamp collecting and coin collecting. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Steven. He is survived by his wife of Bull Shoals; 2 sons, one of Warrenville, Illinois and and one of Mountain Home; 2 daughters, one of West Chicago, Illinois and one of Minooka, Illinois; 3 brothers, one of Phoenix, Arizona, one of Amarillo, Texas and one of Arlington, Texas; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 26, 2007 issue: Lyle WOOD, age 84, of Flippin, Arkansas, died Sunday, April 22, 2007 at the Marion County Nursing Home in Yellville, Arkansas. Mr. WOOD was born January 2, 1923 at Flippin, Arkansas the son of L.A. and Lena Lea HUTCHINSON WOOD. He was a lifelong cattleman and farmer of the Flippin community and had served as interim mayor for Flippin. He was a member of the Flippin City Council, Marion County Quorum court and the North Central Ark. Woodcarver's Association. He served as a board member for the Flippin School for 10 years, Flippin Cemetery for 30 years and Citizen's Bank Board of Directors for 16 years. Mr. WOOD was a renowned Marion County historian, coached Little League baseball and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during WWII, and was a member of the Flippin First Christian Church in Flippin. Survivors include his wife of Flippin, AR; three sons and three daughters-in-law one of Flippin, AR, one of Dubuque, IA and one of Salem, AR; two daughters one of Flippin, AR and one of Yellville, AR; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death. Funeral service were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at the Burns Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jack Gilliland officiating. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were present. Memorials may be made to the Flippin Cemetery. Mr. CULVER was the owner of Wilderness Trail Tackle and Supply in bull Shoals, a licensed fishing guide and author of a weekly fishing report that appeared in numerous publications including the Mountaineer Echo. Local survivors include his wife and mother, both of Bull Shoals, AR. A celebration of life for Mr. CULVER will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2007 at Kirby & Family Funeral Home in Bull Shoals. Mr. LOFTON was born December 27, 1923 at Calico Rock, Arkansas the son of B.F. and Eunice HANKINS LOFTON. On December 24, 1974, he was married at Cotter, Arkansas. Mr. LOFTON worked as a lumber grader at a flooring mill and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He lived all of his life in this area and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Survivors include his wife; three stepsons one of Fayetteville, AR, one of Mayflower, AR and one of Flippin, AR; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. His parents, three sisters and one brother preceded him in death. Funeral service was held Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Glade Rock Chapel.
