Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of September 9, 2004 issue: Lowell Vertis STROUP of Flippin, Arkansas died Thursday, September 2, 2004 at the Twin Lakes Nursing Center in Flippin, Arkansas. He was 89 years old. Mr. STROUP was born April 15, 1915 in Blackburn, Oklahoma to Issac Franklin and Elizabeth WILLIAMS STROUP. He was a retired Yardmaster for the Santa Fe Railroad. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Borger, Texas and a 32nd Degree Mason. Survivors include his wife Marion of Fredericksburg, Maryland; daughter, Elizabeth "Libby" LIVINGSTON of Flippin, AR; sister, Lillian FOWLER of Amarillo, Texas; two grandchildren, Randy LIVINGSTON of Flippin, AR and Jeff LIVINGSTON of Austin, TX; and four great-grandchildren, Trevor Livingston of Kansas City, MO, Tyler LIVINGSTON and Lindsey LIVINGSTON, both of Flippin, AR and Lauren LIVINGSTON of Austin, TX. Visitation was held Monday, September 6, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. Funeral service was held Monday, September 6, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Flippin with Brother Steve Martin officiating. Burial followed in Memory Gardens Cemeter in Pampa, TX. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of September 9, 2004 issue: Betty Jo DENTON of McGehee, Arkansas died Saturday, September 4, 2004 at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, AR. She was 77 years old. Mrs. DENTON was born November 8, 1926 in Flippin, Arkansas to the late G.B. KEETER and Nancy REED KEETER. She was a retired sales clerk for West Gibsons Department Store and a member of the McGehee First Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, G.B. and Nancy KEETER; her husband, Rex DENTON; and one grandson, Matthew Rex SHUMAKER. Survivors include two sons, Bo DENTON of his wife Patricia of Conway, AR and Marty DENTON and his wife Yogi of McGehee, AR; two daughters, Nancy HALL and her husband Jeff of North Little Rock, AR and Karen SHUMAKER and her husband Kelly of Wells, TX; one brother, Bill KEETER of Yellville, AR; two sisters, Johnnie MELTON of Pyatt, AR and Frankie HARRIS of Spokane, WA; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Griffin Funeral Chapel with Reverend Ross Raymond and Reverend Bud Davis officiating. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Monday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The family received friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, First Presbyterian Church of McGehee or the Desha County Library. Burial followed in the McGehee Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Service of McGehee. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of September 9, 2004 issue: Edith LAWHON, age 89, of Harrison died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at the Marion County Nursing Home where she had been since January. She was born Dec. 24, 1914, in Peel, AR, a daughter of James and Lillie (MILLER) WILKERSON. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rhuel LAWHON; six brothers, Chester, Lester, Otto, John, Jimmie, and Arthur Lee; and one sister, Lillian DODSON. She is survived by two sisters, Olivette BATTENFIELD of Hampton, Virginia, and Mary RISLEY of Peel, AR; several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Gwen STICE of Summit, AR, and a special cousin, Helen SLOAN of Harrison, AR. Services are 10:00 am Thursday Sept. 9, 2004, at Holt Memorial Chapel with Rev. Marshall Boggs officiating. Burial is in Maplewood Cemetery. Nephews are pallbearers and nieces are honorary pallbearers. Visitation is open after 10:00 am Wednesday at Holt Memorial Chapel. Burial will be private. James Thomas STALEY was born to Thomas and Edith WOLFE ALVAREZ on May 5, 1927 at Chicago, Illinois. Mr. STALEY was a Navy Veteran of WWII and married Helen Arlene MCALOON on January 10. 1947 at Chicago, Illinois. Mr. STALEY was a retired truck driver for Meadowmoore Dairy in Chicago and moved to Arkansas in 1976 from Schaumburg, Illinois. James T. STALEY is survived by five children, James T. STALEY, Jr. of Tacoma, WA, Michael L. STALEY of Flippin, AR, Debbie (Donald) MATTHIESEN of Geneva, IL, Deni (Jack) STALEY Gamble of Huntley, IL and Thomas J. STALEY of Lakeview, AR; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and special friend and companion, Patricia BATES. Mr. STALEY was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Helen. He was born December 18, 1916, in Manhattan, New York, to Frederick Waterbury and Helen BOHLING LANE. On August 27, 1941, he married Elsie M. "Nana" DEHART in Brooklyn, New York. A World War II U. S. Army veteran, Mr. LANE retired as a bakery truck driver. He moved here in 1986 from Brooklyn. Mr. LANE was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and especially enjoyed his family. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed watching sports. He was a Lutheran and a member of the Hoevel-Barnett V.FW. Post #1340 in Bull Shoals. She was born May 17, 1920 in Cotter, Arkansas to the late Holbert SPANGLER and the late Ellen SPOON SPANGLER. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Malvern and a homemaker. Ann had a special love for life and laughter. Her family will cherish the many hours they have spent sitting around her table while she reminiscences numerous stories of her past. The memories she leaves behind are happy memories filled with much laughter. The heritage she leaves behind will linger in the heart of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren forever. He was 77 years old. Mr. KING was born October 10, 1926 at Eros, Arkansas the son of Frank and Goldie SUGGS KING. He was a retired machinist for U.S. Rubber Company and a US Army veteran who served in WWII. Mr. KING lived the majority of his life in Renton, Washington. He enjoyed catching salmon, growing tomatoes and visiting with his neighbors. He had been a resident of Marion County since March of this year. He was the son of the late David and Mary Elizabeth VANZANDT ESTES. A carpenter by trade, Mr. ESTES helped build the concrete Cotter Bridge and the old Veterans Administration Hospital. He retired from Pickens-Bond Construction Company. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member and Past Master of Albert Pike Lodge #714. He was a very positive and independent person all his life. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Abbie Mae WOLF ESTES on November 2, 2003, his parents, and three brothers, Clyde, Ruey and Bud ESTES. He was born January 28, 1932, the son of Maynard and Marjorie (LUNDQUIST) MORRISON in Freeport, IL. Wayne grew up in Lily Lake and attended local schools graduating from Burlington High School with the class of 1949. Following graduation he worked with his father at the cement company in DeKaIb for a time before working as a welder at Howell's Furniture Company in St. Charles in 1951. Following a whirlwind year courtship that began at the DeKalb Roller Rink, Wayne was united in marriage to Marlene CURZ on June 20, 1954. They began their new life together in Cortland for two years before settling in Lily Lake in a home that Wayne built with his own hands. After twenty-five years, Howell's closed and Wayne continued to weld at ARCO in Wasco, IL. In the mid 1980's Wayne became a realtor and worked for First United Realtors, Land of Lincoln Real Estate, and Van Realty, all of St. Charles. Wayne retired in 1994 and concentrated on golfing and fishing both locally and at their vacation home in Bull Shoals, AR. In his early years he was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church. In later years he attended and was a faithful member of the Lily Lake Congregational Church. Wayne was involved in the incorporation of the village of Lily Lake, was the road commissioner and also served on the board of trustees. Wayne was a man of many hobbies and from those hobbies he acquired countless trophies. He was an avid member of the Lily Lake Air Knockers, a model airplane club that competed with many other clubs in the region, as well as at Bong Air Force Base in Wisconsin. These competitions resulted in many trophies, including 1st place at Nationals. He was also a catcher and later a coach of a local softball team in Lily Lake. Wayne participated in a bowling league that netted him even more trophies and he drove a stock car for a time before employing a driver to take care of race time duties. Later in life he sponsored and coached girl's softball teams and was an umpire for countless high school games. His most beloved hobbies were fishing and golfing, which he enjoyed into his last years. Of all his trophies and accomplishments, Wayne valued his family as his most prized possession. He thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent with his children and grandchildren teaching them how to fish. He now leaves his loving wife Marlene; two daughters, JoAnn (Barry) PAXTON and Diana (Donald) STOLL, both of Plato Twp., IL; five granddaughters, KoriAnn STOLL, Kristi STOLL, Katie STOLL, Joni SCHMALZ and Kelsey SCHMALZ; two sisters, Kris (Gary) EKSTROM of Maple Park, IL and Dorothy WALKER of Holt Summit, MO; two uncles, John MORRISON of Hanover, IL and Harvey MORRISON of Derinda Center, IL; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and a family of friends. He now joins his parents and many aunts and uncles. A memorial service to celebrate his life was held at 3:00 p.m. at the Lily Lake Congregational Church on October 3, 2004. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lily Lake Congregational Church and mailed in his name to P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119.

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of September 30, 2004 issue: Oval WINGATE, born on January 12, 1919 near Peel, Arkansas, a lifelong resident of Marion County, Arkansas, died Monday, September 27, 2004 shortly after 5:00 am in the North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison, Arkansas. Born the eighth child of Arthur Franklin WINGATE and Eva HELMS, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Norvin WINGATE, Orville WINGATE and Marvin WINGATE; sisters Lora YOCHAM, and Rena WEAVER; and an infant son. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Emma Lee (WILKINSON) WINGATE of Yellville, Arkansas; three sisters Melba HELMS of Yakima, Washington, Chloe HODGE and husband Faye HODGE of Bergman, Arkansas, and Dorothy PAYNE of Wichita, Kansas; one son Danny WINGATE and wife Vineta Terherst of Green Forest, Arkansas; two daughters Linda GARTMAN and husband Wayne GARTMAN of Mesquite, Texas and Phyllis GANJIAN of Plano, Texas; two granddaughters Kimberly Jones and husband Jay Jones of Rogers, Arkansas, and Mendi TERRASAS and husband Cali TERRASAS of Rogers, Arkansas; one grandson Jason WINGATE of Little Rock, Arkansas; one great-granddaughter Emma JONES; and one great-grandson Clayton JONES. Pallbearers are Jack WALLACE, Rodney JONES, Gary HODGE, Larry HODGE, Gail WINGATE, and Ronnie WILKERSON, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Faye HODGE, Howard YOCHAM, Edward KING, Kelly HURST and Roger PALMER. Visitation was held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29 with funeral services at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 30, 2004 at Burns funeral Home in Yellville, Arkansas and burial at the Peel Cemetery.
