Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 8, 2004 issue: George "Pat" PATTERSON, 79, of Mountain Home, died Sunday, April 4, 2004 at U.A.M.S. in Little Rock. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Twin Lakes Cremation Society and Funeral Home with Reverend Fred Taylor officiating and Military Services provided by the North Central Arkansas Veterans Council with Ozark V.F.W. Post 3246 of Mountain Home serving as Honor Guard. Burial will be private. Mr. PATTERSON was born February 22, 1925 at West Orange, New Jersey, to Charles Leslie and Etta M. STICKLE PATTERSON. Mr. PATTERSON was a Navy veteran of WWII and served in Okinawa, Japan. Mr. PATTERSON married LaVerne METZLER on May 6, 1944 in Elks City, Oklahoma, and was an insurance adjuster of All State Insurance before retiring to Mountain Home in October 1985 from Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. in New Jersey, a member of Ozark V.F.W. Post 3246 of Mountain Home, and a former member of the Elks Lodge #1714. He enjoyed gardening, playing the organ, and remodeling his home. He is survived by his wife, LaVerne PATTERSON of Mountain Home; three sons: Richard A. PATTERSON of Lumberton, Texas, David L. (Nancy) PATTERSON of East Pointe, Michigan, Roger D. (Angela) PATTERSON of Austin, Texas; and one daughter, Patricia A. (Richard) COUGHLAN of Blairstown, New Jersey; five grandchildren and one great grandchild, and one brother, Lewis PATTERSON on Toms River, New Jersey. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 15, 2004 issue: John Joseph "Joe" KNUST of Yellville, Arkansas died Monday, April 12, 2004 at his residence in Yellville. He was 67 years old. Mr. KNUST was born June 28, 1936 at Houston, Texas to Johnny and Marzee CAWTHON KNUST. On June 22, 1958, he married Agnes COCHRAN. Mr. KNUST was a retired millwright superintendent for Brown-Root Construction Company. He was a resident of Marion County for the past 18 years. He was a member of the First Evangelical Church in Houston, TX. Survivors include his wife Agnes KNUST of Yellville, AR; son, John Alan KNUST of Sarasota, FL; daughter, Karen Suzanne SKINNER of Nashville, TN; and brother, Clyde Stephen KNUST of Conroe, TX. Visitation was held Tuesday, April 13, 2004 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 14, 2005 at the New Hope Baptist Church in Yellville with Brother Mark McManus officiating. Burial followed at the Layton Cemetery in Yellville with Roger VICKERS, Gerald DAVENPORT, Dwayne DAVENPORT, Fred BURROW, Troy HODNETT and Bob WEDGEWORTH serving as pallbearers. Mr. SMYTH was born February 8, 1923 to Garland and Florence (GREENHAW) SMYTH. Mr. SMYTH was a retired Postmaster for the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the Marshall United Methodist Church, the volunteer fire department of Searcy County, the Cattleman's Association, a past Chairman of the Democratic Party, and the Soil Conservation Board. Mr. SMYTH served in the United States Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife Lula (BRADFORD) SMYTH of Marshall, AR; sons, Mike (Dianne) SMYTH of Yellville, AR and Keith (Melissa) SMYTH of Gassville, AR; a daughter, Marsha JACKSON of Yellville, AR; brothers, Glee SMYTH of Benton, AR, Bob SMYTH of Tulsa, OK, and Kenneth SMYTH of Marshall, AR; and sisters, Bernell (SMYTH) SMITH of Little Rock, AR and Mardell ARMSTRONG of Wagoner, OK; eight grandchildren, Cindy MEARS, Brad SMYTH, Tiffany JACKSON, Colin JACKSON, Stacy WALTON, Jennifer SMYTH, Stacy GRILLIETT, and Monica RAIMONDI; and seven great-grandchildren, Tyler MEARS, Wyatt MEARS, Elizabeth WALTON, Heaven SMYTH, August SMYTH, Emily GRILLIETT, and T. Mr. STONER was born March 25, 1923 at Calico Rock, Arkansas. Survivors include his wife, Dorene STONER of Flippin, AR; and two sons, Don (Tiffany) STONER of Midway, AR and Seth (Jackie) STONER of Peel, AR; three grandchildren, Joshua Don STONER, Jashenia Elizabeth JONES and Justin BISHOP; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Melba CARTER of Amarillo, TX and Pauline PINKSTON of Calico Rock, AR. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 22, 2004 issue: Elizabeth Veronica STOTT of Yellville, Arkansas died Sunday, April 18, 2004 at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Arkansas. She was 95 years old. Ms. STOTT was born February 28, 1909 at New York City, New York to Leslie and Mary O'CONNER STOTT. She was employed as a roller for a cigar company. She was a Catholic by faith. Survivors include her niece Dorothy ROYSTON of Yellville, Arkansas. Her parents, Leslie and Mary STOTT preceded her in death. There are no local services or visitation planned. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of April 28, 2004 issue: Gene ADAMS, 82 of Eugene, Oregon died April 26, 2004 at his home of cancer. He was born September 19, 1921 in Yellville, Arkansas to James and Loretta ADAMS. He married Mavis Ruth PANGLE in Yellville on October 19, 1940 and soon after moved to the Yakima, WA area. He worked at Sears then sold advertising for KIMA Television. He and several partners then founded a new TV station, KNDO in Yakima. The family moved to Eugene, OR in 1960 where Gene worked in advertising and real estate. In 1984 he became an Intervention Specialist for Serenity Lane, an alcohol and drug treatment facility located in Eugene and worked there for ten years. Gene never forgot his boyhood in Arkansas and traveled to the Yellville area as often as he could to visit family and friends. He enjoyed golf, boating and traveling in his motor home. He is survived by his wife, Mavis; two sons, Rick of Hillsboro, OR and Glen of Eugene, OR; two sisters, Frankie SEAY of Yakima, WA and Dorothy BRISTOL of Harlingen, TX; and a granddaughter, Merrick ADAMS of Kennewick. His parents and his sister, Jimmie NEIL, preceded him in death. Sunday's service will be held on May 2, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at the Valley River Baptist Church, 1145 Willagillespie Rd., Eugene, OR 97401. Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley River Baptist Church or the Sacred Heart Hospice in Eugene, OR.

She was born May 10, 1912 in Peel, Arkansas to W. M. and Ella (FEE) CAGLE. She married Boyd Rea WEAVER on May 6, 1933. Ms. WEAVER was a homemaker and a member of the Peel Full Gospel Church. Visitation was held from 4:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville. The funeral service was held Monday, May 3, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Peel Full Gospel Church with the Reverend Carroll Johnson officiating. The burial was at Peel Cemetery with Tim AKINS, Mark EARNHART, Greg ASHTON, Rob AKINS, Rick AKINS, and Boyd Weaver serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include the staff of Claude Parrish Clinic at Lead Hill, Dr. Mahlon Maris and staff, Home Health Care, and the staff of Marion County. She is survived by sons J. W. The Dalles Chronicle May 18, 2004 issue: William Avery AUSTIN, 76, died in The Dalles on Sunday, May 16, 2004. He was born in Lead Hill, Ark. on Sept. 11, 1927 to Lula Bell (GAINES) and John W. AUSTIN. On Dec. 20, 1945, he joined the United States Army and served during World War II. He completed his service on May 7, 1947. He settled in Trout Lake in 1963 and worked for Rogers Construction and SDS Road Construction Crew. In the 1970s he bought his own dump truck, which he ran until his retirement. In October 1996, he moved to Pine Grove, south of The Dalles. For the past year, he had been living at Mill Creek Point in The Dalles. He was an avid horseman. He broke horses, worked cattle and rode all over Mt. Adams, an area he knew very well. He loved to play the guitar and particularly enjoyed bluegrass and old country gospel music. He was an accomplished poet and songwriter. Surviving are his children, Janie DODGE and Bob AUSTIN, both of Maupin; Sue NEWTON, Rochester, Wash.; Barry AUSTIN, Bandon, and Scott AUSTIN, Dufur; sister Dorothy "Dot" WADE, Yellville, Ark.; 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Preceding him in death are sisters Avo CHAPPELL, Elsie SOMMERS and Hazel YOUNG; brothers Leonard and Lester AUSTIN; son William Kenneth AUSTIN, who died in the Vietnam War; daughter Vickie MCGINNIS, who died in April 2000; and his wife Monnie, who died in July 1995. A funeral service will be held at Gardner Funeral Home on Saturday, May 22 at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at the Trout Lake Cemetery.

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of May 27, 2003 issue: Larry L. KIRK, 57, of Yellville, Arkansas died Thursday, May 20, 2004 at McClellan Veterans Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Mr. KIRK was born August 5, 1946 in Compton, California to Johnny Ralph and Gertrude Lillian (GIVES) KIRK. Mr. KIRK was a disabled veteran who served the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam. He was also a member of ABATE, a Christian motorcycle club. Survivors include son Jeremy Lance KIRK and sister Barbara PHIPPS of Witter, AR, and two grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death. There was a graveside memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at Freck Cemetery in Yellville, with Vern Phipps officiating. He will be buried at Freck Cemetery. Mrs. HODGES was born on August 17, 1930 in Fairview, Arkansas to Liford and Rosie Mae (YOUNGER) HALL. On September 19, 1947 she married Bill Joe HODGES. Mrs. HODGES was an assembler for Baxter-Travenol Ind. She was also a member of the Rea Valley Baptist Church where she sang with the Rea Valley Quartet. Her two daughters, Gail VALORA of Haden, Colorado; and Gina WHEELER of Yellville, Arkansas; two brothers Russell HALL of Amarillo, TX and Luther HALL of Texas; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren survive Mrs. HODGES. Her parents; husband, Bill Joe HODGES (1998); two grandchildren, Kaitlin and Chad; and two sisters Excil and Norma preceded her in death. Visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville, AR. Services for Mrs. HODGES were held Wednesday, May 26 at the Rea Valley Baptist Church with Brother Ed Ramsey officiating. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of June 24, 2004 issue: Laqueta Ann NIXON (FRAME) passed away May 20, 2004 quietly in her sleep. She spent time with her grandsons the previous night, which always made her happy. She was born on March 9, 1942 in Mountain Home, Arkansas. She moved to San Diego, California with her children, Vance FRAME and Deidra KLOFT (FRAME) in 1979, and then to Phoenix, Arizona in 1984. When her mother became ill in 1987, she returned to her hometown of Flippin, Arkansas to care for her mother, Lillie KING (FRAME) and her stepfather, Ikey KING, until they passed away. She spent her whole life caring for other people, even though here disability made it difficult for her to care for herself. After attending Flippin High School, she attended a 2 year technical program for office administration. She worked in that capacity to provide for her family for many years, till her disability stopped her from working. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lillie KING (FRAME, BEST), her father, Charles FRAME, and her stepfather, Ikey KING, who was like a father to her for her whole life. She is survived by her daughter, Deidra KLOFT, , who resides in Williams Arizona; her son, Vance FRAME, who resides in Chandler Arizona; and three grandsons, Matthew, Kevin, and Robert FRAME, who were the light of her life. She is also survived by many lifelong friends, as she never met a person she did not like. We all love you very much Mom, and know that you are with the lord and without pain. Viewing and cremation services were arranged by Bueler Mortuary in Chandler, Arizona. Local memorial services for family and friends in Arkansas are scheduled for June 26 at her parent's gravesite in Flippin, at approximately 3:00 pm in the afternoon. Charlaine Katherine PICKETT was born May 19, 1950 at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Charles and Rose PATTON PICKETT. On September 27, 1969, Charlaine wed Robert WINKELMANN at Plymouth, Pennsylvania. In April 1995 they moved to Yellville from Fairmount Springs, Pennsylvania. Mrs. WINKELMANN was an assembler at Baxter Healthcare, enjoyed shopping, fishing, swimming, and being with her family. Mrs. WINKELMANN is survived by her husband, Robert WINKELMANN of Yellville; four sons, Robert WINKELMANN III and wife Pam of Berwick, Pennsylvania; Brian WINKELMANN, Michael WINKELMANN and Kyle WINKELMANN all of Yellville; one daughter, Kelly KING and husband Joseph of Flippin; two grandchildren, Josh and Katie; her mother, Rose PICKETT and four sisters in Pennsylvania, Rosemary, Nancy, Patty and Eileen. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of June 3, 2004 issue: Sandra K. ROBERTS, 55 of Rogers, died Friday May 21, 2004 at her home from a lengthy illness. She was born November 14, 1948 in Gassville, Arkansas, to Roy Lee TREAT, and Winnie ERWIN TREAT. Sandra graduated from Flippin High School, Class of 1966, and graduated with a Business Administration degree from Pettit Jean Technical College. She has been associated with the Rogers School System where she was an Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools. Sandra enjoyed sewing and making things for her grandchildren. She especially enjoyed spending quality time with her family and friends. Sandra was caring, loving, generous, compassionate and very understanding. She was a great protector and provider for her family. Sandra was a member of Fellowship Bible Church of Northwest Arkansas. Survivors include her husband of 35 years Ron ROBERTS, of the home; a son Brad ROBERTS, and his wife Michele, of Tulsa; a daughter Brandi HARRIS, and her husband Jeff, of Ft. Worth, TX; her mother, Winnie TREAT, of Flippin, Arkansas; two brothers Don TREAT of Flippin and Bob TREAT of Fayetteville; four grandchildren Andrew ROBERTS, Anna ROBERTS, and Sara ROBERTS, all of Tulsa, and Avery HARRIS, of Ft. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of May 27, 2003 issue: Marion Edward "Gene" TOLLIVER, age 86, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, the VA Towbin Healthcare Center in North Little Rock. He joins his younger brother, Samuel, his sister Lee FRIEND, his parents, Noah and Hazel TOLLIVER, his grandmother Melvina (BUCKMASTER) and grandfather Alfonzo TALIAFERRO in Heaven. Gene was born August 24, 1917, in Clearwater, Kansas. He was raised on a farm near Mt. View. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at 15 years of age. He worked as a short-order cook in a St. Louis restaurant before volunteering for active duty with the USCG-Merchant Marine branch. He entered service December 31, 1943, and was discharged July 26, 1945 He was awarded the Atlantic War Zone and Merchant Marine decorations for service during WWII for serving as a Fireman and Oiler aboard ships carrying food, supplies, and medicines to troops in France, Germany, Britain and Russia. After hostilities ended in Europe, the ships continued humanitarian missions through October 1945. He was cited by the Embassy of Murmantz, Russia for humanitarian efforts to the troops and prisoners of war. After WWII he spent his life in Arkansas, around Yellville until 1969 and around Roland since then. He signed a Minor League baseball contract with the Gainsville Owls (TX), a Pittsburg Pirates farm team, as a pitcher. He returned to his family in Yellville, where he worked on the construction of the Bull Shoals Dam and as a lineman for AP&L. He owned and operated an International Harvester Company farm store in Yellville and later served as the Farm Bureau Agent for Marion County. He served as the Marion County Judge during the mid-sixties. He worked diligently to establish a new Marion County public library and the ferry that crossed the north end of Bull Shoals Lake. Gene had a lifelong love for baseball and fishing. Following his baseball career he worked with Jerry McKinnis as a fishing guide. He managed Maumelle Harbor Marina for McKinnis before buying the Marina and operating it for another twenty years. While living in Central Arkansas, his dedication to community service continued. He served as a Reserve Deputy for the Pulaski County Sheriff. He volunteered time and resources to deliver Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets and gifts to those in need. He served as boys' baseball coach to the Pulaski County Sheriff Association at Junior Deputy Field. He also served as a licensed armed security guard for Worthen Bank and Trust. He was a member of the Baptist Church, the National Rifle Association, the Pulaski County Sheriff Association, and the Masonic Lodge. He formed and sponsored the Maumelle Rangers Bowling League, Maumelle Buddy Bass Association, and was an avid and excellent horse-shoe pitcher. He is survived by seven children: Carol WOOD of Flippin, AR, Mark TOLLIVER of Cabot, AR, Jeff TOLLIVER of Baxley, Georgia, Rebecca DEPRIEST of Coffer, AR, Debi GUENTHER of Roland, AR, Patricia LEHMAN of Wichita, Kansas, and Geneanne SPANN of Roland, AR, two sisters - Maureen HORTON of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and Winona HORTON of Mt. View, AR, 16 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were arranged by Huson Funeral Home, 7700 Highway 107 Sherwood, AR. Graveside services were scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26 at the Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery on Maryland Avenue in North Little Rock, AR. Memorials may be made to Arkansas Hospice, Inc., 5600 West 12th St., Little Rock, AR 72204 to a charity of your choice, or to the scholarship fund established at the University of Arkansas - Little Rock.

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of June 3, 2004 issue: Martha Bell (GILLEY) PARSONS long time resident of Yellville, Arkansas went home to her maker on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 after losing her battle with ALS and cancer. Martha was born July 9, 1932 in Turkey, Arkansas to Claude and Flora (REED) GILLEY. She attended school at Yellville-Summit. She was the youngest of 6 children. She was married to Hal MAHON, Jr. and to that union 3 children were born. Martha worked many years in Baxter Lab and Mar-Bax Shirt Factory from where she retired. She was later married to Gene Parsons, but there were no children born of this union. She was preceded in death by her daughter Florene, her husband Gene PARSONS, her parents Claude and Flora (REED) GILLEY, five brothers Hurl GILLEY and his wife Anna Sue, Clifton GILLEY, Don GILLEY, Philip GILLEY and Jack GILLEY. She is survived by her sons, Hal Don MAHON and wife Barbara, Ricky MAHON and wife Regina all of Alva. OK; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Danny MAHON and wife Terri of Woodward. OK, Jeremy MAHON of Dallas, TX, Kenneth MAHON and wife Holly Courtney "Beth" MAHON all of Stillwater, OK, Chelsy KENYON, Chase MOORE, and Shane MURROW all of Alva. OK; her special friend, Edwin "Red" SANDERS of Yellville, AR; best friends, Emma THAYER and Lee GAINES of Greenfield, MO; sisters-in-laws, Charlene GILLEY of Flippin, AR, Blanch GILLEY of Tulsa, OK and Evelyn GILLEY of Yellville, AR and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was laid to rest on May 29, 2004 in Nanney Cemetery in Yellville. Arkansas, She was a loving, kind, mother and forgiving woman and will be greatly missed by all.

Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of June 3, 2004 issue: Felicia "Lisa" WILSON GLEIM, 44, of Theodosia, Missouri passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004 at Little Rock, Arkansas. A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at the Presbyterian Church in Bull Shoals, Arkansas with Reverend Dr. Fred Taylor officiating. Felicia Lynn ROSE was born to Mary Ruth OWEN ROSE and Bill ROSE on September 25, 1959, at Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1962, the family moved to Bull Shoals where Lisa and her brother, Bobbie, attended school at Flippin. Lisa married Gary WILSON on July 8, 1979 at Flippin. Together they began Swift Boat Manufacturing Company in Theodosia, where they lived. Survivors include her husband, Ricky L. GLEIM; two sons, Chancey WILSON of Branson, MO and Chase WILSON of Theodosia, MO; her mother, Mary SCHULTZ and step-father, Robert; one brother, Bobbie ROSE of Bull Shoals, AR; three step-brothers, John SCHULTZ of Houston, TX, Dan (Nancy) of Pontiac, MO and David (Cindy) SCHULTZ of Tampa, FL; grandmother, Dorothy ROSE of Flippin, AR; and three nieces, Heather (Kevin) DAFFRON of Fairview, AR, and Bridgette (Rodney) SAUNDERS and Natalie ROSE all of Benton, AR. Her father, Bill; former husband, Gary WILSON; step-brother, Robbie SCHULTZ; aunt, Sadie SPENCER; grandfather, Dan ROSE; and grandparents, Zerold and Flora OWEN preceded her in death. Arrangements were by Twin Lakes Cremation Society and Funeral Home in Bull Shoals, Arkansas 870-445-4257.
