Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of August 12, 2004 issue: Donna Rachel WILLIAMSON was born November 18, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska to John and Elmont WILLIAMSON. She was the first daughter and the second child, joining older brother John (known to all as Jack). Younger brother Gordon later completed this generation of the WILLIAMSON family. Donna grew up with her family in Omaha, Nebraska. She was always proud to have been the one responsible for introducing Jack to her friend, Eunice, who became his wife. Donna attended college at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. On June 10, 1945, she married Ray E. PHELPS. In June this year they celebrated their 59th anniversary. Donna and Ray moved to Illinois where they began what would be their life's work in serving as the preacher and the preacher's wife of local churches. The years in Illinois marked the birth of their three children, sons, Lowell Edward and Douglas Allan, and daughter, Kathleen Susan. They returned to Omaha, Nebraska, to assume the ministry of the Benson Church of Christ and later to plant the Wildwood Christian Church in Ralston. Donna's partnership with Ray helped their success in their church work, where she provided leadership and support in ministries to children as well as both vocal and instrumental music. In summer of 1976, guided by a commitment to their responsibility to care for her parents, Donna and Ray resigned the ministry of the church in Blair, Nebraska, to make their home in Arkansas. So for twelve years Ray and Donna served the church in Flippin and watched over her mother and father. After Ray retired from the church in Flippin, Donna and Ray moved from Flippin to Yellville. These years were also the years of their involvement in the nurturing of their nine grandchildren. Donna will be remembered by her grandchildren, as the grandma who loved to play with them. With the progression of Alzheimer's demanding more personal care, the family chose to move Donna closer to her daughter in Longview, Texas earlier this year. Ray joined his wife there after closing the house in Arkansas. Donna passed from this life quietly on Friday afternoon, August 6, 2004. Her parents and her son, Douglas, preceded Mrs. PHELPS in death. She is survived by her brother, Jack WILLIAMSON and his wife Eunice of Linwood, New Jersey; brother, Gordan WILLIAMSON of Phoenix, Arizona; Ray, her husband of 59 years; son, Lowell PHELPS and his wife, Debbie; daughter, Kathy MOORE and her husband, Craig; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends who treasure her memory.
