ADAM WEAST
Submitted by: Don G Kirk (dgkirkgen@swbell.net)
Updated July 2005
We have learned much more about the family of Sarah, daughter of Adam and Sophia Weast. We welcome additional family information and corrections. See credits and additional contacts at the end of last page. Don G. Kirk
Generation No. 1
1. ADAM2 WEAST (JOHN JACOB1 WIEST) was born ABT 1799 in NC, and died 1864 in Marion Co. Ark. "On Buffalo River". He married SOPHIA FORTUNE March 13, 1826 in Rutherford County, NC, daughter of WILLIAM FORTUNE and SARAH MELTON. She was born November 9, 1801 in Albemarle County, Virginia, and died June 7, 1889 in Yellville, Marion Co. Ark..
Notes for ADAM WEAST:
The spelling of the Weast surname is one of several spellings. This spelling was found on his marriage bond, on his 1850 census in Rutherford County, NC and was used by all his descendants. There is circumstantial evidence of the parents of Adam. There is a marriage recorded for Jacob Wiest and Mary Yearwood in 1794 in Rutherford County. In 1804, Jacob Wiest bought 100 acres of land on the First Little Broad River. There is a marriage recorded for Adam Weast and Sophia Fortune in 1826 in Rutherford County. There is a will on record for Mary Rose, presumably Mary, wife of Jacob Wiest. Adam is listed as one of the heirs. Adam Weast purchased land on Robinson's Creek and on the First Little Broad River with its conjunction with Wards Creek. Adam Weast sold land on Robinson's Creek in 1852. He is found on the 1830, 1840, 1850 census Rutherford Co. NC
He moved his family to Marion Co. AR about 1852. He bought land on Crooked Creek, part of which was in the town of Yellville. His name was first found on a tax roll of Marion Co. AR in 1853. His original cabin was on the upper end of Main Street. The Weast Hotel was also there and was the CSA recruiting office in 1861. The hotel was probably burned during the Civil War, as the town was burned three times during the war. If so, it was rebuilt, as it was still operated as a hotel by his son, Leonard, after the turn of the century. The hotel was still standing in the 1950s. Five sons of Adam and Sophia Weast were in the Confederate Army and all survived. He is found on the 1860 census of Marion Co. AR. Marion County suffered its worst times toward the end of the war. There was no Civil law and 'outlaws' added to the misery of the community. It has been written that most male civilians south of the White River were killed by bushwhackers, guerrillas or Jayhawkers during the last years of the war. They took advantage of these unprotected, destitute people, looking for food and valuables. Many of those who survived the war, died of starvation, having no weapons with which to kill game in a devastated land. It is recorded in the "History of Marion County" that Adam Weast died on the Buffalo River in 1864, but no further details are given. We would appreciate hearing from anyone having details of Adam Weast's death and/or burial place.
Notes for SOPHIA FORTUNE:
Sophia's parents moved from VA to Rutherford Co. NC about 1804 and located in the same area as the Weasts. Before her marriage to Adam Weast, Sophia had a son, Nelson, born 1822, fathered by Henry Deck. Nelson died in 1847 and is buried in Rutherford Co. as Nelson Fortune. Sophia and Adam Weast had 10 children with 5 sons serving in the Confederate Army. She somehow survived the terrible times in northern Arkansas during the Civil War. Sophia lived in Yellville with her youngest son, Leonard, during her later years as shown on the 1870 and 1880 census. The Mountain Echo reported that "Grandma Weast, one of the oldest citizens of this county, died", June 1889. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Yellville. At present no grave site for her has been located.
My grandmother, Nettie Weast McGavock, who lived to be 99 and who was a granddaughter of Sophia, had a photo of Sophia which had her birth date of Nov. 9, 1801 written on the back. Nettie said she remembered that Sophia had red hair. Brandy Parks, a descendant of Benjamin Weast, also has a copy of this photo. This photo is posted on the Marion County Gen-Web site.

Mtn. Echo, February 13, 1891: Will Weast left for Texas this week. He is in very bad health and we hope the change will be beneficial to him.
Mtn. Echo, March 20, 1891: Word reached here last week of the death of Will Weast at DeLeon, Tex. He had been suffering for some time with consumption and went to Texas with the hope of improving. Will was one of our best young men and his early death was sad news to his many friends.
April 17, 1891: OBITUARY, Editor Echo. Please allow me space in your valuable paper to pay a tribute of respect to my much loved brother, W. L. Weast, who departed this life March 4th, 1891 at Highland, Erath Co., Tex.
A loved one from our home is gone, a voice we loved so well is still.
A chair is vacant in our home, that never can be filled.
Death has been here and bore away a brother from our side,
Just in the morning of his life, as young as we, he died.
Perhaps our time may too be short, our days may fly as fast,
O, Lord, impress this solemn thought, this day may be our last.
We cannot tell who next may fall, beneath the chastening rod,
One may be first, but let us all prepare to meet our God.

John came to Yellville with his family about 1852. He married Nancy Smart of the Union Grove area of Carroll Co. AR which later became Boone County. The 1860 census of Carroll Co. finds them 3 houses away from her parents. They had a baby, Isabella, just before the war.
Confederate records show that he enlisted July 12, 1861 at Yellville and was in the 14th Ark. Infantry. Archive records show he was also in Missouri Cavalry, Co. E. He was part of Major Gen. Sterling Price's cavalry during his Missouri campaign. John lost a leg during the Battle of Westport, near Kansas City. He was captured and was in three Federal prisons and managed to survive his amputation and diseases in the prison. An obituary indicates they had 7 children with 5 living at the time of his death. On the 1880 census of Marion Co. AR, Mary Anne had died and he had 4 of his children living with him. The next few years found him in the Yellville area as evidenced by news items from the Mountain Echo. The editor kept trying to get Ben married off again. In 1900 he was living in the Chickasaw Nation with his daughter, Ella, and son-in-law. A descendant, Brandy Walker Parks, has furnished a group photo of Benjamin and his 5 children. Papers found by her indicate that Benjamin made a homestead entry in Quay County, NM in 1906. Through Tony Walker, she also furnished his obituary. At his death in 1910, he was living with his daughter, Anne Laura (Mrs. Jonathon Walker). 1910 census Quay County, NM Ben is resting in Sedgwick Co. KS, Cheney Pioneer Cemetery.

7. SARAH3 WEAST (ADAM2, JOHN JACOB1 WIEST) was born ABT 1837 in Rutherford Co. NC, and died Aft. 1886. She married (1) CHARLES G. BENNETT. She married (2) FRED M. "FED" WOOD ABT 1859 in Arkansas, son of THOMAS WOOD and ELIZABETH TALBERT. He was born ABT 1828 in Arkansas, and died ABT 1873 in Texas. She married (3) WARREN BOLT ABT 1910, son of WILLIAM BOLT and CATHERINE SUTPHIN. He was born in Carroll Co. VA, and died in 1915 in Gridley, Butte County, CA BR: Gridley-Biggs Cemetery.
Notes for SARAH WEAST:
Sarah had a marriage to Charles Bennett in the mid 1850's. They had a son, Charles G. Bennett, who at age 4 was found on the 1860 census of Marion County, Arkansas in the household of his grandparents, Adam and Sophia Weast. At some point prior to 1860, Sarah married Fred Wood and the two, along with Sarah's brother Benjamin Weast, traveled to Texas. The 1860 census records show these three in a household in Williamson Co. TX in the Bagdad community. In 1870 Fred and Sarah and a family of 6 children including Charles Bennett, are in McLennan Co, TX , east of the Brazos River, post office, Waco. She lost her husband, Fred, about 1871/3. A son reported that his father was killed by Comanches while herding cattle. Sarah returned to Yellville with her children after Fred's death and was found on the 1880 census of Marion Co. AR with 4 of her children, William Logan, John L., Mary Jane "Mollie" and Georgia Ann. Mountain Echo, Dec. 24, 1886: "Mr. James B. Wickersham has purchased of Mrs. Sarah Wood her home and lot in the upper part of town. Mrs. Wood and daughter, Logan Wood and wife, and Mr. Warner and wife, all left here on Tuesday for the Indian Nation where they expect to reside in the future." The daughter mentioned would be Georgia Ann who later married George Sears in Indian Territory. At least two of her children, Georgia Sears and William L. Wood moved on to Butte Co. California and Sarah Wood may have gone with them. Sarah had a third marriage in Butte Co. CA about 1910 to Warren Bolt, a shoe and boot maker. He had lost his wife a couple of years earlier. On the 1910 census of Butte Co. CA, Sarah reported 3 marriages. She was married to Warren Bolt for only a few years. The Bolt family is buried in the Gridley-Biggs Cemetery in Butte County.
Notes for CHARLES G. BENNETT (Sarah’s first husband):
His name from OK death certificate of son, Charles G. Bennett
Notes for FRED M. "FED" WOOD:
Fred Wood married Sarah Weast before 1860 and moved to Williamson County, Texas where he is found on the census. He served in the Civil War, the following is probably him: From roll 192 Texas Confederate records: Co. A. Frontier Battalion Texas Cavalry. F. M. Wood, card # 50423g22, Capt. H. Fossett's Co. This appears on a return of an election in Capt. H. Fossett's Co. held at Camp Colorado, TX by order of Colonel J. E. McCord, April 1, 1864 for company commissioned officers. Return dated 1 April 1864. To Hardeman's Regiment, Texas Cavalry, 3-1865.
His last child, Georgia, was born January 1872 per CA death records. This would approximate the death date of her father, Fred. From Indian Pioneer History we find a statement by his son, John Lee Wood: "I was born September 7, 1867, in a covered wagon on the plains of Texas. My father went through the Civil War, fighting the Comanche Indians, without getting hurt, and according to what my mother told me, was killed a few weeks after I was born by a band of Indians while helping with a bunch of cattle." This Indian Pioneer History transcript gives much useful family history and most of it fits very well with facts as we know them. We assume Fred Wood is buried somewhere around McLennan County, Texas.
Notes for WARREN BOLT:
He was a shoe and boot maker appearing on the 1860 and 1870 census of Surry Co. NC, also on the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census of Butte Co. CA. He lived 82 years, 6 months, 20 days.

Mountain Echo, April 19, 1889: Neal Dodd and Dr. Bryan accompanied by Misses Hattie McDowell and Emma Weast took in Harrison last week. Last Sunday evening, it was whispered around that there would be a prominent wedding at the Presbyterian Church after evening services. The result of this news, as well as to hear an interesting sermon, the church was filled at an early hour, almost to suffocation. The congregation was not disappointed in the least; for the Rev. D. C. Ross preached one of the greatest sermons of his life to one of the most attentive audiences. Promptly at 9 o'clock p.m. the church doors were thrown open, a wedding march was played by Mrs. Baker, and Dr. Bryan and Miss Emma Weast, accompanied by Neal Dodd as brideman and Miss Hattie McDowell as bridemaid, marched up to the altar and were married. As soon as the ceremony was over, the newly married couple changed places with the brideman and bridemaid, and to the surprise of all present, the latter couple were married also; Rev. D. C. Ross officiating in both cases. A wedding march was then played, the newly married parties returned to their carriages, the congregation was dismissed and everybody went home heartily wishing the newly wedded long life and true happiness. The young people who have taken upon themselves the vows of marriage, are well known and highly respected residents of Yellville.
