Mt. Echo; Sept. 13, 1895

Once more the death angel has hovered over our quiet town, and claimed as its victim W.H. HUDSON, Sr., more commonly known as "Uncle Henry." He was attacked about four weeks ago with slow fever, and for several days his condition was not considered very critical, but he continued to grow gradually worse until last Friday night, when at about 2:30, he breathed his last, surrounded by his entire family, with the exception of Mrs. NOWLIN, who lives in the I. T., and Willie, who lives at Marshall. Willie arrived here late Saturday night. "Uncle Henry" was among the oldest citizens of Marion county, having arrived at the age of 68 years. He served as sheriff of this county eight years in succession and made a good and efficient officer, and has many friends throughout the county who will regret to hear of his death. He was buried Sunday in the Layton graveyard with Masonic honors. The bereaved family have the sympathy of a host of friends.

Obituary from The Mountan Echo of January 14, 1910:

Last Sabbath morning at 4:00 o'clock a.m. the spirit of "Grandma" Hudson winged its flight into the realms of eternity. Her sickness was of short duration and her last hours were peaceful and she was fully prepared for the end.

Frances E. Bellar was born in Boone county, Arkansas in 1834; was married to Henry W. Hudson in 1854; reared a family of eleven children, nine of whom are living. She was left a widow in 1894.

"Grandma" Hudson , as everyone knew her, was one of the old fashioned type of noble womanhood, the type that, alas, is fast disappearing. Who that knew her will not regret that her spirit has left us; who that knew her number will ever forget her real interest in their individual welfare; her bright, hopeful, encouraging, sympathetic, optomistic views of life?

If Christ's statement that "by their fruits ye shall know them" is the true test of a christian life, then grandma Hudson was a christian in the broadest sense.

Many will mourn but none will doubt but that her gentle, kindly soul has gone to the rich reward that awaits only those whose life on earth has been such as to set the example and help to make manhood and womanhood better.

1850 Carroll County, Arkansas Census does not support birth in 1834. Has her as 13 years old living with her father. They are in the same town with John Hudson and live about three houses away. There is a Peter Bellar (brother to Eli I think) who also has a daughter named Frances E. who is one year older. Ancestral File has this Frances E. daughter of Peter marrying a Bill Harris. I feel Frances the wife of Henry Hudson is the daughter of Eli due to they are living very close to each other and the naming patterns in the family.

Notes for ELIZIA J. HUDSON:

Mt. Echo Newspaper, November 16, 1888: Miss Eliza Hudson, in company with her brother, H.W. Hudson, Jr., started to Springfield, Mo., Wednesday morning.

Mt Echo Newspaper, 15 Nov 1889 Issue: There was another wedding in town last night. Rev. Wm. BIGGS was married to Miss Eliza HUDSON.

Mt. Echo, November 1, 1901

Mrs. Eliza L. BIGGS (nee HUDSON) was born in the Indian Territory February 16, 1862. Soon after the Civil War she moved with her parents to Yellville, Arkansas, where her father was for ten years sheriff of Marion County. She was married to Rev. W.K. BIGGS, November 14, 1889. She joined the M. E. Church on probation, but was never received into the full connection of that church. In 1899 she was received into the M. E. Church, South, being baptised at the parsonage at Clinton by Presiding Elder P.B. SUMMERS. She departed this life at 2 o'clock Thursday morning, October 17, 1901, aged 39 years, 8 months and 1 day. She was the mother of seven children, all of whom survive her, the youngest being an infant scarcely four months old.

It is customary to speak well of a person who is called away from us, but the life of Sister BIGGS needs no such recommendation. She was well known here, and her gentleness in speech and kindness in disposition, exemplifying fully the character of a true wife and mother, were common themes of conversation.

She leaves her children, a husband and several brothers and sisters who are inexpressibly sad to lose one so dear. Brother BIGGS has been the Methodist pastor on the Clinton Circuit for three years, and is fully consecrated to his work. How to care for his now motherless children and carry on his ministrial work is to him a painful problem. The whole community joins in sympathy for the bereft, and in the following prayer for the motherless children.

"O Lord, a mother to them be,

And keep them from all harm;

That they may love and worship thee,

And dwell upon they charms."

v. FRANCES HUDSON137, b. Abt. 1865137.

Notes for FRANCES HUDSON:

Possible Mt. Echo Newspaper Feb 27, 1891 Issue: Yellville was treated to quite a surprise last Sunday when the news spread over town that Ambrose BRATTON of Wiley's Cove had captured one of our most amiable and estimable young ladies, Miss Francis HUDSON. Rev. D. C. Ross performed the ceremony. The happy couple left for a two week's honeymoon during which they will visit the State Capitol and other places. The Echo wishes them success and happiness.

Mt. Echo newspaper, Feb. 3, 1893: Obituary

Little Pearl, daughter of Kenneth and Essie HUDSON, born February 25th, 1888, died January, 20, 1893.

Little Pearl the joy, pride and hope of loving parents and relatives has gone to God, to the beautiful dwelling-place of the angels. Bright and intelligent; she promised to be a great earthly comfor, but God claimed her as one of his jewels, and the bright, happy spirit has returned to the God who gave it.

Dear sorrowing parents, reason and religion whisper to you that your child will grow brighter and be happier in Heaven that with you on earth surrounded by earthly pleasures. You will not be comforted. Your grief is a natural one; but think, she was taken away from evil to come. Had she lived to make the journey of life she would have had to suffer the agony of spirit you now suffer, for in this world ever abideth sorrow. In that land of untold beauty she will always want to stay. She would not return to earth. No not for a moment suffer your thoughts to hover around the grave; she is not there, all that made her the bright little creature she was to you, is now where there are none but the pure and holy. You now have a strong tie binding you to the invisible world. Perfect faith in the goodness, power and wisdom of your Heavenly Father will give you the blissful assurance you have a child in heaven.

She has left a world of sorrow,

Of which she little knew.

In your hearts has pierced an arrow,

But God is drawing you.
