Our ancestor David M. Cummings grew up in Marion Co Ark. His family lived there during the 1860-1880's as shown by the Marion Co census 1870 and 1880. Names and dates for the family are taken from combined census records of 1850 GA, 1860 Al and 1870-1880-1900 Ark

David Cummings left Ark and went to south Tx- Tomball and Conroe area, Montgomery Co TX because in 1888 he was married there to Anne Adams. He took his wife Anne and some of her Adam siblings (Martha, Betty, Shurd) to live in Glass, Jackson Co Ark where his sister Candis and mother Mary Jane Commons were living in 1900.

David's sister Candis married to George Tyler in Marion Co ARk -had two sons there before moving to Glass Jackson Co Ark and had more children. The Marion Co census showed George and Candis Tyler lived a few households away from our Cummin family in 1880. Also in that 1880 census it showed a grandson lived with the Cummins named Henry Rice age 11 b. Ark parents b. GA GA. Nearby also lived a Rice family a young couple -man's name unclear maybe William or Ham b. 1875 GA parents SC NC and wife Sarah b. 1876 GA parents NC and SC with a young child John b. Ark parents SC and Ga.

(See Marion Co Ark homepages to find the Tyler web page with info on our Candace's husbands Tyler family.)

Also living in Glass, Jackson Co Ark were families Mooney, Harvey, Ivey, Moon. I noted Mooney surname in Marion Co Ark history. Our David lived with young man named Price Mooney after his wife Anne died. And there was a Cummins mar to a Price in that area. Also living in Glass was another Cummins family headed by a William from KY. in 1900 census. In 1870 census there was a McCommon family there in Glass from TN probably Hardeman TN and some of that family migrated to Paris, Lamar Co TX. Other Cummings named folks in that area included Faith Cummins buried same year as her father A.C. Cummins in 1920. William Cummins from Illinois in 1870 his parents born Illinois also. Frank Cummins b. Ohio his wife Francis Baker born Indiana. A child buried there named Wanda Louis Cummins, and Cummins married to Farln, McGary, Pigg, Price, Durkin.

More on David's wife Anne Adams family copied from another letter-

David Cummin's wife Annie Adams at the time they married was part of a large Adams family of unmarried siblings that lost their parents within a few years of each other to sickness -Holden Adams and wife Eulila "Delila" Brossait. Holden Adams family came from early days of SC settlement and included maternal surname of Holden - that family in SC early on also and others from VA early settlement days of James, VA. - Lea, Green, Herndon, Major, Ironmonger others.

The Adams migrated to LA - Washington and Bienville and Natchitoches LA and our Holden Adams Jr met his wife Delila Brossait/Brossette "pronounced Bro shay" there. Her family had settled Natchitoches, LA from earliest days- were French people from France mainly - a few were French from Canada. One of her ancestors was a Caddo indian named Ann married to a French soldier- Ann was mother of two - a son and daughter whose grandchildren married so making Ann a double ancestor. There was at least one other Indian maiden ancestor. The earliest French soldiers to LA left the Fort in Natchitoches during the winter and stayed with various friendly Indian families so that they could have food to eat during the winter. They went back to the Ft in the spring. From this practice they ended up with Indian wives.

One of the Adams family descendants -Shepard Adams has had his family researched professionally and shares our Adams and Brossait family tree on line at on-line

Either in TX or Ark our David Cummins and Anne Adams had several babies die at childbirth (boys) then they had my grandmother Bertha Ann Cummings in 1892 in Ark. When Bertha was around three yrs old her mother Anne had another baby boy and both baby and mother Anne died during the childbirth.

I interviewed my grandmother Bertha Ann Cummings many times about her early life in Swifton, Ark. She was orphaned by around age ten and raised by her mother's sisters - first Martha Adams Caldwell and then by Betty Adams Hutchinson. She lived to be 102 yrs old and was never in hospital during her life until her death from stroke. Very spry and active to the end and clear in her mind. The stroke was in her throat. She died in her sleep.

When 18 yrs old Bertha Cummings married a Swifton young man -James Earl Rhodes and within a yr they migrated to Shamrock and Wewoka OK. There is a lot of info on the Rhodes family because of their maternal side the Fravel family. They were from Switzerland and were Swiss Brethren folks. Info about that family can be found on the Shenandoah Valley Va genealogy page surnames include Rhodes, Fravel, Hottel, Kellar, Bushong. Look for the historical farm of the Hottel and Kellar family in Shend. Valley info. The Rhodes migrated to Corydon Harrison Co Indiana and then to Kirksville MO. where son Harvey Evrett Rhodes was born who came to Ark and mar Lois Rebecca Utley in Ark. They lived in Swifton, Ark. Their son James Earl Rhodes grew up there and married Bertha.

Bertha Cummins and James Earl Rhodes raised 7 children. These children- James Carl Morris Rhodes "Swampy" and wife Ethel Marie Sneed just celebrated 65th wedding anniversary in OK; had 5 children and 13 greats, 5 gr grts, 1 gr gr grt.

Eldeva Mae Rhodes Whaley Scott, lives California had 4 children and 11 grand and several greats Pauline Gertrude Rhodes Looney, lives Colorado had 2 children 4 grand 3 great. George Nealon Rhodes deceased, family OK had 2 children 4 grand. Loda Earline Rhodes Martin, TX had 2 children and 3 grand. Ernest Ray Rhodes -OK had 4 children and 5 grand Frankie Jean Rhodes Smith - TX had 5 children and 17 grand and 2 greats .

Around 100 kinfolks get together each year since I can remember and have a great time. Very loving group. My mother Frankie was the youngest born when my grandmother Bertha was 42 yrs old. Frankie is now in her 60's and I am her oldest Terri and one of the family historians :) The next reunion Nov. 2001 - is at my aunt Earline's farm in Clifton TX and she lives just 30 minutes from me in Waco. I hope to have a nice display and booklets on our family by that Thanksgiving weekend.
