Notes for Mary Susan LANCE

Family tradition says the parents of Mary Susan Lance are Nicholas Washington Lance and Jensee McCracken. I have not found anyone named Nicholas Washington Lance in any other records. As for Jensee McCracken, I believe she is the Jane McCracken listed in the 1850 census of Cannon Co, Tennessee as the daughter of Elam and Jane McCracken. This is the only record I have found for her. Her mother, Jane Maxey McCracken was also known as Gencie or Jincy, so this could be where the family tradition came from.

Notes for James M Cain

Family records indicate that James M.C. Cain was married to Minerva Caslon. Apparently she was his 3rd wife. This could explain why there was a Minerva Cain, age 29, listed as a head of household on the 1870 census of Jimie's Creek twp, Marion, Arkansas. James might have married her after 1860 and then himself died before 1870.

The only other place I find a mention of Minerva Cain is the grave markers of the Fairview Cem where the graves were moved to that were previously at Wildcat Cem. Minerva Cain was buried next to Jim Cain.

Julie Pool's Latest Parker File says James Cain md. Sarah Stone, daughter of John Stone and Mariah Bayless. In deed records of Ozark Co, MO, she is listed a his wife, Sarah C. Stone. I'm not sure which of James Cain's children are hers, but I think it might be just Angaline.

Malinda Margaret Cain Newberry said that this Riller (she was not sure of the spelling) lived at Peel, Arkansas, and was married to an Uncle of Jim Crews. I should check censuses for someone of this name, Riller Crews. I think this is the same person listed in the Mt. Echo newspaper marr. rec. as "Avarilla Cain," who married J. E. Cruse. This child appears on the census in the household of Minerva Cain. I assume she is the daughter of James Cain and his wife Minerva. The name is difficult to descipher on the census, but a later marriage record for Avarilla Cain is probably the same person.

Notes for Jensee or Jane McCracken

Family tradition is that her name was Jensee McCracken. I believe she was Jane McCracken, daughter of Elam McCracken and Jane Maxey. Jane Maxey McCracken was called Jincy or Gencie, and I believe it was she who raised her daughter Jane's children, therefore there was confusion in family traditions about who was Jensee (or Jincy or Gencie), the mother or the grandmother.

Notes for Elam G. W. McCracken

According to The History of Marion Co by Earl Berry (1977 Mation Co Historial Association) pg 210-214 (submitted by Elsie B. McCracken and Nina Sue McCracken Cole) - Elam G. W. was a native of Ireland, lived in TN for a time, came to Marion Co in 1810, landing at the Noe Landing on White River near the mouth of Jimmies Creek. He settled in what is known now as the Promise Land community. He married in TN and his wife's maiden name was Maxey.

I believe Elam was born in North Carolina as is indicated on the 1850-1870 censuses, rather than Ireland. Perhaps his parents were from Ireland. Also, the comment that he went to Marion Co, Arkansas is probably false. He was in the 1850 census of Cannon Co, Tennessee, and probably went to Arkansas shortly afterward. S.C. Turnbo says in his history, "I moved to Jimmies Creek (in Marion County) in 1852 and bought an improvement from Mr. Elam McCracken who come to Jimmies Creek in 1851... ...My wife whose name is Elizabeth and who is a daughter of Elam McCracken.." It has been told by another descendant that Elam McCracken was an illegitimate son of a woman named McCracken, and his father is not known.
