Slave Census Book

Marion County, AR Census Records
1860 Slave Census
From Federal Census Microfilm M653-54
Transcribed by: Linda Haas Davenport

Dividing Line

The census was taken by W. C. Mitchell Ass't Marshal 1 Jun 1860. Michell's handwriting leaves a lot to be desired. Mysty McPherson was kind enough to give me the correct spelling for some names. Her corrections are in red. Thanks Mysty for your help. If anyone else has any corrections please let me know.

The 1860 Slave census for Marion County consists of four pages set up so that each page contains two identical sets of columns with one on the left and one of the right side of the page. The Slave Census does not identify the slaves by names. The owner is listed and then all the slaves that person owns are given by age, sex and color.

There are only two color designations given. B=Black & M=Mulatto. (Mulatto refers to someone who is part white & part black.)
