Benny Ellis SMITH was born to Alice DILLARD Smith and Benjamin Harrison SMITH ON October 31, 1922, the fourth of nine children, in Mull, Arkansas. He spent his youth wandering the wilds of the Buffalo River Valley in the innocent times before electricity and phones. His character molded through the closeness of his family, the hard times endured, and through his enduring faith in the Almighty. On one of his excursions, Benny met his soul mate in Leslie, Arkansas in 1946, with the couple becoming one in marriage on September 21, 1946, never to part in life. He left his simple country upbringing to make his way in life, becoming a professional driver, skillfully handling the heaviest of loads with strength and pride and always willing to help a stranded motorist or another trucker. Benny spent 38 years on the road before retiring with Arkansas Best Freight, Incorporated and returning to his beloved Ozark mountain home. Benny was a member of the Flippin Church of Christ and was known throughout the community for his quick-wit, contagious optimism, and to those who knew him well for his strong inner light. He is survived by his wife of 57 years; two daughters; two grandchildren; four sisters; three brothers; and three great-grandchildren.
