Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of March 6, 2003 issue: Celia Elizabeth MIRES SANDERS, 87, of Celia Lane, Lexington, Kentucky, formerly of Yellville, Flippin, and Fayetteville, Arkansas, retired elementary school teacher, wife of Orville B. SANDERS, Sr. for 54 years, died Sunday, March 2, 2003 at the Hospice Care Center at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. She was born December 16, 1915, at Alleene, Arkansas, the daughter of Edward Samuel and Elizabeth PATTERSON MIRES. She graduated from University High School in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where her family had moved in 1923. She received her first bachelor's degree in home economics from the University of Arkansas in 1938 and did graduate work in home economics at the University of Arkansas. She completed requirements for her elementary teacher's certificate in 1964. Mrs. SANDERS began her teaching career as a vocational home economics teacher at Okolona High School Okolona, Arkansas, from 1938-1942. She also taught vocational home economics at Manila High School in Manila, Arkansas (1942-1945), and Green County High School in Paragould, Arkansas (1945-1946). From 1946-1949, she was a home economist with the Agricultural Extension Service in Marion County, Arkansas. From the time of her marriage in 1949 until 1964 she was a homemaker. She was an elementary teacher in Greenland, Arkansas, from 1964 until her retirement in 1980. She and her husband moved to Lexington in 1996. Mrs. SANDERS was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Arkansas Education Association, the American Association of Retired Persons - National Retired Teachers Association Division, Arkansas Retired Teachers Association, Washington County Retired Teachers Association, American Association of University Women, Trinity United Methodist Church where she served on the Administrative Council for several years, and United Methodist Women. Survivors in addition to her husband include a daughter, Elizabeth SANDERS (Gary) HANSEN of Lexington, Kentucky, a son, Orville Blaine (Cindy) SANDERS, Jr. of Magnoila, Texas, two step-daughters, Shirely SANDERS TIPTON of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Nina SANDERS CRENSHAW of Houston, Texas; four granddaughters, Christina HANSEN of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Megan HANSEN of Richmond, Kentucky, Brandy SANDERS and Robynn SANDERS, both of Houston, Texas; two step-granddaughters, Camillie CRENSHAW GARCIA of Houston and Carla TIPTON BERANEK of Richmond, Kentucky, a step-grandson, Conan Michael CRENSHAW of Houston, and two step-great-grandchildren, Patrick and Tiffany GARCIA. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters, Emma C. MIRES and Katherine C. MIRES both of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Cemetery, Fayetteville, Arkansas. Moores Funeral Home is in charge of graveside services. Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of March 13, 2003 issue: Mrs. Elizabeth Lee SOWELL SMITH, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, the 5th of March, 2003 at the Brighter Living Assisted Living Facility in Hopewell, Virginia after a brief illness. Formerly of Mountain Home, Arkansas, she moved to Chester, Virginia in November 2000 to be closer to her son, Larry, and his family. Her husband J. Quinby SMITH, also of Mountain Home, preceded her in death. She was born on 26 October 1918 to Sam and Betty (CUNNINGHAM) SOWELL at Summit, Arkansas. She married Quinby on 1 Aug 1942 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mountain Home. Over the years, she was active in several, church civic and service organizations, including the Wesley Guild of the First United Methodist Church, Hilltop Home Demonstration Club, Ozark Square Dance Club, Arkansas Archeological Society, Ozark Earth Science Society, and was a Past Treasurer of the Baxter County Historical Society. She was a retired secretary for the U. S. Department of Agricultures's Soil Conservation Service in Mountain Home. She is survived by her son Lieutenant Colonel (U.S. Army, Retired) Lawrence B. (Larry) SMITH, daughter-in-law Lynne, and grandson William Quinby SMITH of Chester, Virginia; devoted niece Betty (Bill) VEAZEY of Ashdown, Arkansas; sisters Cecil (Randy) JAEGER of California and Norma (Andy) CAPALDI of New Jersey; brother Jim SOWELL of Pelsor, Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, 8 March 2003. Services were conducted by the Reverend Jim Brooks at the Kirby-Boaz Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, 9 March 2003. Mr. JOZEFOWICZ was born April 23, 1917 at Chicago, IL to Frank and Cora JOZEFOWICZ. On April 17, 1947 at Chicago, he married Helen POLAK. Formerly of Roselle, IL, Mr. JOZEFOWICZ was a resident of Flippin since 1969. He was employed as a carpenter. Survivors include his brother, Richard JOSEWICK of Addison, IL; five nieces and two nephews. His parents, wife, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Mrs. DAVIS was born September 25, 1911 at Harris, Kansas to Henry William and Mable Almertie SCHARFF TOWNSEND. On May 6, 1932, she married D.A. DAVIS. She was a retired school teacher and also a retired motel owner/operator and had worked as a cook and a foster parent. Mrs. DAVIS moved to Peel from Colorado in 1994. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Delta, CO. Survivors include her husband, D.A. DAVIS of Peel, AR; daughter, Lila Marie DOOLEY and husband David of Peel, AR; sons, Delmont Alvin DAVIS, Jr. and wife June of Bonita Springs, FL and Gerald E. DAVIS and wife Kendra of Littleton, CO; brothers, Raymond TOWNSEND and wife Dona of Lebanon, OR and Thomas TOWNSEND of Lebanon, OR; sister, Anna L. MOULTON of Eureka, CA; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Her parents and brothers, Fred, Orval, Arlie and Emery TOWNSEND, preceded her in death. Mr. KIELSMEIER passed away March 17 at his residence. Mr. KIELSMEIER was born January 18, 1920 in Cleveland, Wisconsin to Hugo and Emma TILLS KIELSMEIER. He served in the US Army during WWII. He married Janet W. KELLY in 1963 at Wheatridge, Colorado. Mr. KIELSMEIER retired from Oscar Mayer and Company where he was a research technologist. They moved to Bull Shoals in 1980 from Madison, Wisconsin. He was a member of the Bull Shoals Library Friends. Mr. KIELSMEIER is survived by his wife, Janet KIELSMEIER of the home; one brother, Lester KIELSMEIER of Wheatridge, CO; one sister, Audrey KOTTKE and husband Paul of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. MASSEY was born July 31, 1908 at Yellville, Arkansas to Alfred Harrison and Sarah Jane WILLIAMS MOREAU. Mrs. MASSEY was a homemaker and loved to crochet and garden. She was a member of the New Hopewell Baptist Church. Survivors include her sons, J.D. MASSEY of Marshall, AR and W.L. She married Glen Truman NIEDERHAUSER on October 20, 1965 at Omaha, NE. She was bookkeeper for Niederhauser Airways, and worked in the Human Resource Department for John Deere for 5 years in Waterloo, IA, and she was a florist. She was a former resident of Bull Shoals, AR since moving from Waterloo, IA in 1978. She had recently moved to Pearland, TX to be near her daughter. She was a member of Sweet Adelines and was very active in League of Women's Voters. She was an avid bridge player, golfer and painter, and loved swimming, sailing, skiing, and boating. She was a member of the Bull Shoals United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one grandson. (KEETER) SCHMAHL, 48, of Yakima passed away during the early morning hours of Saturday, March 29, 2003 after a courageous battle over several years against cancer. She was born September 13, 1954 to Leyman "Red" and Bernice W. (KEELING) KEETER in Yakima, Washington. She attended Highland High School. She went to Fisher's Beauty School before working at Lally's Beauty Salon in Yakima as a hair stylist. In 1974, she bought a home in Yakima and remodeled the garage to open her own shop, "Nancy For Hair". Her clientele became her "family" and the source of many lasting friendships. She met Roger SCHMAHL in March of 1983 and eleven months later they were married. Together they made a great team, completely remodeling their Yakima home. They also labored together, for over seven years, to build a retirement cabin finishing in 1998. Besides working alongside her husband, Mrs. SCHMAHL enjoyed gardening, boating, water skiing, and a variety of crafts. She never sat still for long, even after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She received the "Cookie Beam Award" from the Wellness House. She is survived by her husband, Roger SCHMAHL of Yakima, WA, a daughter Nicole Lynn SCHMAHL of Yakima, WA, her mother Bernice KEETER of Yakima, WA and her brother Michael KEETER of Selah, WA. She is preceded in death by her father "Red" KEETER. The family is very grateful to Dr. Tori JONES, Dr. Diana WILLADSEN, Dr. FRETER, Dr. CLEARY, Dr. HAUGE, and the staffs at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, North Star Lodge, Washington Hematology-Oncology Specialists for their tremendous efforts to give Nancy the best medical care available in Yakima during her battle for life. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. in the Englewood Christian Church. A private entombment service followed in the West Hills Memorial Park. Born in Yellville, Arkansas, he was a Yuba-Sutter resident for 43 years. He retired from Lamon Construction Co. Inc. as a private pilot. An instructor pilot for many years, he helped start Rainbow Aviation at Sutter County Airport and was a member of the Sutter County Airport Advisory Committee. He retired at Beale Air Force Base as a major from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service, serving as a B-17 pilot in World War II as well as in Korea and Vietnam, and was a member of the American Association of Swedish Internees. He was a member of the Yuba-Sutter Aero-Squadron of the Sheriff's Department and a charter member of the Retired Officers Association at Beale Air Force Base and the Order of Daedalians, Flight 50/Gold Rush Flight. He was also a member of the Yuba City First United Methodist Church; Corinthian-Hammonton Lodge 9 of the Free and Accepted Masons of Marysville; Ben Ali Temple of the Shrine in Sacramento; Central Sacramento Valley Shrine Club; Eighth Air Force Historical Society of Northern California; and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 15005 and American Legion, Sutter Post 705. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Catherine PANGLE of Yuba City; a daughter, Nina SCOLA of Thousand Oaks; a son, Larry PANGLE of Memphis, Tennessee; a sister, Margie DUFFY of Yellville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
