CALLUM, Earl

Earl Callum, age 87, died Frebruary 8, 2001.

He was born August 2, 1913, a son of the late George and Alice Callum.

At an early age, 'Daddy Babe" united with Mt. Olive AME Chruch.  He attended Hopewell
Elementary School.  He worked for the Bradley Mill and was a log cutter and farmer for 
several years.

He married Creola Ross on September 3, 1931.  In 1961, he moved his family to Pasadena,
California, and was employed by Blake's Nursery and different construction companies.  In 
1972, he retired from Blake's Nursery and returned to the Mt. Olive community.  He worked in
the woods as a log cutter to age 80.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Willie Ray Callum; one daughter,
Beaver Shaffer; two sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Creola Ross Callum, of Mt. Olive; 5 sons, Joe D. Callum,
Lee Edward, Sam Earl, Rickey Callum, and Willie (Loretta) Callum, all of Pasadena, California;
8 daughters, Beatrice (Clinton Sr.), Edith Mae Strong, of Warren, Georgia (Robert) Halloway,
Cozetta (Eugene) Hail, Ramanethea (Ned) Henderson, Vernest (Lenbery) Wilson, and Dorothy
Ann Callum of Pasadena, CA, and Zedell Smith of Rialto, CA; 2 brothers, Vernon Callum of
Mt. Olive and Nathan Callum of Pasadena, CA; 2 sisters, Arma (Jack) Slater of Detroit, MI, and
Vernice (John) Black of Pasadena, CA; one brother-in-law, Quiney Lee (Zenobia) Ross of 
Compton, CA; 2 sisters-in-law, Ozell Callum and Majorie Ross of Mt. Olive; hunting cousin, 
Charlie (Christine) Terry; James (Edna) Adam, Steve (Earlee) Price, Mrs. Eula Mae Martin and
family; 61 gramdcjo;drem. 109 great grand-children, 24 great great grand-children, and a host
special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, February 17, 2001, at Mt. Olive AME Chruch with Rev. E.J. Daniels
officiating.

Active pallbearers were Willie Marks, Walter Jordan, Lewis Newton, Gregory Hampton, Glen E.
Hives and MacArthur Hemphill.

Honorary pallbearers were Joe D. Callum, Lee Edward Callum, Willie L. Callum, Sam Earl Callum,
Ricky Callum, Eugene Callum, Charlie Ward, James Adam, and Lenard Stepps.


CAMERON, Earl Lee

Earl Lee "Bear" Cameron, age 65, died May 4, 2001, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.

He was born April 13, 1936, in Wilmar, the son of the late Ernest and Cillia Cameron.

Survivors include his wife, Ometha Cameron; one son, Dwight Cameron; three daughters,
Stephanie Millier, Phyllis Thomas (Bruce), and Cynthia Miller (Ray), all of Wilmar; one brother,
Donald Cameron of Star City; one sister, Gladys Heard of Los Angeles, CA; eight grandchildren;
Aundre, Jamie, Cynthia, Tralain, Monisha, Deshundra, Bruce and David; his mother-in-law, 
Gertrude Taylor; a friend, Levi Thruman; nieces, nephews, other relaitives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 11, 2001, at Greater Shady Grove AME Church, Wilmar,
with Rev. Shrily Spencer officiating.

Burial was in Wilmar Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


CAMPBELL, Clarence

Clarence Campbell, 53, died September 6, 1997.

He was born January 11, 1944 in Mt. Olive, the son of Dave Campbell and Ethel York Campbell.

Survivors include: his wife, Vearlean Campbell; 3 children, Vester Griffin, Pam Griffin and Wanda
Griffin of California; 2 step-daughters, Patricia Tatum of Milwaukee, WI and Esserlean Burns of Warren;
6 sisters, Rita Scott of Mound Bayou, MS, Beatrice Campbell of Aurora, CO, Rosetta Henderson, Denver, CO;
Jannie Williams and Mary Lee Eckford of Chicago and Alma Washington of New York; one brother; Lindell
Campbell of Chyenne, WY; one aunt; Velton York of Johnsville; 8 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 9
step-great grandchildren and a host of nieces nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 13, 1 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church.

Rev. Larry Hines officiated.

Burial was in Mt. Olive Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


CAMPBELL, Ernest

Ernest Campbell, age 87, died February 5, 1999, in Banks.  

He was born March 15, 1911, the son of the late Columbus Campbell and Maggie Boswell Campbell in
Banks.

He was a retired logger and 3rd degree Master Mason.
   Survivors include one stepdaughter, Katie Will McClendon of Detroit, MI; one daughter, Earnesteen
Campbell of Banks; four sons; Andrew and wife, Mary Campbell of Houston, TX, Lee Edward
Campbell and friend, Minnie Grubbs, Earnest Campbell, Jr. and Kenneth and wife, Dorothy Campbell, all
of Detroit, MI; two sisters; Mary Lucendy Wilson and Laura Elizabeth Gordon, both of Bastrop, LA; 
twenty-one grandchildren, thirty four great grandchildren, ten great great grandchildren; one sister-in-law,
Grady Wiley, both of Warren; a special cousin, Lemma Davis of Banks; and nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, February 10, 1999, at 1:00 p.m., at Childs Cemetery in Banks.

Elder Joyce Trotter-Hampton officiated.

Burial was in Childs Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


CAREY, John L., Jr.

John L. Carey, Jr., age 87, died April 6, 2001, at Beverly Nursing Home.  He was born January 17,
1914, the son of the late John L. Carey Sr., and Lou Ella Carey.

Survivors include 4 nieces, Lee Annie Daniesl of Warren, Etog Petty of Oklahoma, OK, Francis Bradley
of Milwaukee, WI and Elnora Roland of Chicago, IL; 2 nephews, Charles Bradley and Thomas Bradley,
both of Las Vegas, NV; great and great great nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Hammons Funeral Home Chapel.

Rev. G.T. Blackman officiated. 

Burial was in Union Cemetery.


CARMICHAL, Ressie H.

Mrs. Ressie H. Carmichal, 85, of Warren, died may 12, 1999, at the Bradley County Medical Center.

Born March 10, 1914, at Mardsen, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Maggie Hardgraves.

Survivors include five daughters, Cloiteen Moore of Detroit, MI, Mary G. Daniels, Linday Rainey,
both of Warren, Joanne lowe of Kansas City, MO, Barbara Majors of Oak Park, MI; a son, Earl Carmichael
of Warren; one sister, Lula Atkins of Crossett; 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 4 great great 
grandchildren.

Funeral serices were held Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at 1:00 p.m. at Power House Church of God in Christ
with Bishop R. E. Matheney officiating.  Burial was in the Union Cemetery at Warren.

Funeral arrangements were by Reddick Funeral Home of Warren.


CHAMBER, Steve

Steve Chamber, age 43, died November 24, 2001, at Bradley County Medical Center.

He was born September 5, 1958, the son of Helen Martin and the late Monroe Chambers.

Survivors include his wife, Alfreda Chambers, whom he married November 25, 1995; one son,
Zachary Newton; ;7 sisters, Helen Ruth Roberson of Fordyce, Dorothy (Larry) Roberson and Nancy (Almo) Barfield
of Houston, TX, Catherine Moore, Erma (Otis) Scales, Carolyn Bradley (Robert), and Sharon Elis, all of Warren;
one brother, John Jackson of Huston, TX; in-laws, James and Gloria Daniels and Alvin Newton; nieces,
nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Christine Jackson, and grandparents, Jack and Nancy Martin.

Funeral services will be in Pine Grove Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


CLARY, Charles

Charles Edward Clary, age 48, died February 4, 2001, at the Bradley County Medical Center.

He was born June 25, 1952, the son of the late Edgar and Mary Clary.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Martin Clary of Englewood, CA; 2 daughters, Erearetta Haskell
of Warren and Folonda Clary of Englewood, CA; 7 sisters, Eddie B. Rideout, Louise Jones, Zenobia
White, Dorothy Jean Clary, Shirley Ann Clary, all of Warren, Mary Janice Martin of Tracy, CA and
Betty Jean Jackson of Milwaukee, WI; 3 brothers, Eddie Willie Clary and Ronnie Clary, both of Warren,
James Otis Clary of Centerville, TX; one grandchild, Ja'Nasha Walton of Warren; two very good friends,
Pete Alexander and Lawrence Boswell; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, February 10, at St. John AME Church in Warren with Rev. Johnny
Simpson officiating.

Burial was in St. John Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


CLARY, Dewey

Dewey Clary, age 86, died March 22, 1999, at Wagnon Place Nursing Home in Warren.

He was born November 17, 1912, in New Edinburg, the son of the late Daniel and Beatrice Marks Clarey.

His survivors include one sister, Dorothy Price; five sons, Dewey Clary, Jr., and Eddie Clary of Pine Bluff,
O.W. Clary and C. M. Clary of Warren, Ton Daniel Clary Simmons of Milwaukee, WI; three daughters,
Ruby Lee Tutson of Buchora, MI, Lucille Gilmore of Las Vegas, NV, Lummie Ruth Smith of Fordyce; 45
grandchildren, and a best friend, Patty Adams.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Lummie Easter Warner Clary and Mary Taylor Clary; three
children, Norma Jean Ellis, Bertha Mae Tate Rogers and Lucille Robinson; one sister and four brothers.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 27, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. at Hammons Funeral Home Chapel, Warren.

Rev. G.T. Blackman officiated.

Burial was in St. John Cemetery.


CLIFTON, Verna

Verna Clifton, age 46, died June 12, 1999, at Baptist Medical Center.

She was born October 2, 1952, the daughter of George Ed and Georgia Mae Hampton.

Survivors include her husband, Wallace Clifton; one daughter, Fenetria Clifton; one son, Karlos Clifton;
one granddaughter, Khadijah Clifton; her mother, Georgia Hampton; five sisters, Barbara Hampton, 
Cleola Wheeler, Mary Hampton, Brenda Clary, and Wanda Jamison; three brothers, Fred Hampton,
and Greg Hampton.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 19, 1999,  at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Hampton Chapel A.M.E.
Chruch in Johnsville.

Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home.


COLEN, Dr. Joseph N.

Dr. Joseph N. Colen, 63, a Warren native and a Mississippi educator, died June 15 (no year given).

Dr. Colen was a chairman of the department of mathmatics at Jackson State University.

He was a son of the late U. S. and Eddie Zenobia Neely Colen, Warren, and was the middle child
of 11 born to them.

All have had distinguished careers.

Dr. Colen began teacing at Smackover and Fort Smith.  He was educted at Arkansas AM&N College, Atlanta
University, and the University of Indiana, Bloomington, where he received his doctorate.

Dr. Colen was most active in the Pearl Street AME Church at Jackson where he was a trustee, a member
of the sanctuary choir, and a number of other church-related activities.

He was also most active in fraternal organizations including Omega Psi Psi.

His survivors include his wife, Horice Greely Barnett Colen; a son, Joseph Weiss Colen, Jr; and the 
following brothers and sisters; mrs. Avis Sue Wilson of Riverside, California; Mrs.Helen Lowe of Memphis,
Dr. John Colen of Sacramento, California; Shirley Tolefree of Oklahoma City; the late U. S. Colen, Jr. of
Detroit; and the following from Warren: C. Raymond Colen, Eddie D. Colen, Freddie V. Colen, James Colen,
and Mrs. Mary Oreece Hammons.

Funeral was June 18 at the Pearl Street AME Church of Jackson with the Rev. Johnny Barbour, DD,
officiating.

Interment was in the Lakewood Cemetery of Clinton, Miss.

Pallbearers were Charles Raymond Colen, Freddie Colen, Dr. John N. Colen, Jeffery Moore, Dr. William
Rush, Eddie D. Colen, James Albert Colen, Dr. Joseph Cameron, Marcel Pilate, and James Smith.

Trustees of the church were honorary pallbearers.


COUNTY, Jerline B.

Jerline Blackmon County, age 83, died Monday, January 11, 1999, in California.

Born December 6, 1916, to Cornelius and Gladys Davis in Warren, whe was the eldest of six children.

She received her education in Bradley County and met and married Willie J. Blackmon in 1952.

Known affectionately as "Big Mama", she united with Beulah Baptist Church in 1957 under the  leadership
of Rev. J. O. Barnett.

Through the years, she served in several capacities in the church.  She was a member of the Celestial 
Choir for over 40 years, Chairperson of the general mission's Phoebe Circle, Supervisor of the Success Senior
Citizens Club and was a member of the Condolence Committee.  She was also a faithful member in Sunday
School and B.T.U.

In 1968, she successfully completed a certificate in Culinary Arts from the Watts Skills Center.

Survivors include one daughter, Connie Deloatch and son-in-law Pastor Romel Deloatch of Montclair,
CA; for grandsons, Dion, David Jr., Darnell and Keonte; two grand daughters-in-law, Michelle and
Birteal Schells; a specia son and granddaughter, David Schells, Sr., and Victoria; an adopted daughter, 
Oorraine Thomas; adopted grandsons, Raynell and Ryan Toimas; tow great grandchildren, Chopin and
Kyler Schells; a sister, Arlene Jones and brother-in-law, Herman Jones of Warren; one brother and sister-
in-law, Luther and Lillie Davis of Grand Rapids, MI; three sisters-in-law, Louise Blackmon, Cleo Thomas
of Los Angeles and Teresa Blackmon of Riverside, CA; one brother-in-law, William McKinley Blackmon; many
nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Memorial services wre held at Beulah Baptist Chruch with Rev. Robert L. Taylor, pastor, officiant.

Pall bearers were William Johnson, Ray M. Thomas, Harvey Adams, Ray O'Sullivan, Anthony D. Pierson,
Deacon James Ross, Deacon Joseph Bldden and Elder Curtis Levi.

Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Coving, CA, by South Los Angeles Mortuary,
Los Angeles, CA.


CRANFORD, Clarence

Clarence Cranford, 73, well-known citizen of Warren, died January 22, 1992.  Mr. Cranford was a 
native of New Edinburg, a son of the Lee Cranfords.

He had resided in Warren for many years.

His survivors include five daughters and three sons: Sally Howse of Warren, Clementine Buford of
North Carolina, Sue Dean Hill of Detroit, Mary Davis of Detroit, Mrs. Tracy Cook, Warren; Elder Clarence Cranford, Jr.,
Los Angeles; Elder Marvell Cranford of Detroit, 33 grandchildren and five great grand children.

Funeral was Saturday at the Power House Church of God in Christ.  Those taking part included the Rev. R. E.
Matheney, Lorraine Hudson, Nolan Phillips, Sally Howse, Samuel and Howard Butler.

The Rev. Clarence Cranford Jr., associate minister of the West Angels Chruch of God in Christ, Los Angeles,
was in charge of the eulogy.

Grandsons and sons-in-law were in charge of services as pallbearers.


CROSBY, James Lee

James Lee Crosby, age 73, died April 3, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare.

He was born January 1, 1929, the son of the late Grant and Joie Crosby.

Survivors include 5 brothers, George (Mildred) Crosby of Warren, Peter Crosby, Nathan (Lee) Crosby,
Jewell Crosby, and Adolph (lonnie) Crosby, all of Chicago, IL; two sisters, Margaret Jones and Arma
(Donnell) Stewart of Chicago, IL; nieces, nephews, other realitives and friends.

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Hammons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John
Phillips officiating.  Burial was in Union Cemetery.
