BRODIE |
Saturday, 3 Feb 1866 |
Obituary
Feb 3—In this city, on the 22d ult., Josephine
BRODIE, aged 20 years, 1 month.
We bid adieu to her whose voice so oft we have heard,
now still in death. The grave now covers her, who, in
years past was merriest among the festive throng; whose
presence loaned a charm to each successive hour, no
matter where such presence was found. Farewell, sweet
girl! Thy place among thy friends is no longer filled,
but me thinks ere now thy spirit roams among the blessed,
and joy the world can never know, now fills to overflow
thy soul. We love thee – miss thee, but deplore
thee not. Thou art not dead, but livest in a better
and happier world. “Sweet flower, good night.”

DORRIS
GORMAN |
Tuesday, 23 Mar 1869 |
SERIOUS ACCIDENT
Mar. 23—A man by the name of GORMAN, was accidentally
shot one day last week, from a pistol in the hands of
a boy named James DORRIS. It seems GORMAN and another
man were talking on the walk in front of DORRIS shop,
when this boy who was inside of the shop carelessly fired
off a pistol, the ball passing out of the door that was
open and inflicted a serious if not a fatal wound in the
breast of GORMAN. It is time the authorities took this
matter of carrying fire arms in hand. As it is now, this
boy and most every other scrub of a boy has a pistol,
which they are shooting off, greatly to the annoyance
and danger of men, women and children. It would not be
much satisfaction to a father or mother having a child
killed or injured by such insignificant scrubs, to know
that it was accidental. Let the authorities act at once.

"Brush" STEWART Found
Murdered On Rudy Roadway
FORT SMITH, March 8—His head literally torn from
his shoulders by a charge of shot fired at close range
striking him squarly in the forehead causing instant death,
the body of J.B. "Brush" STEWART, well known
Crawford county farmer residing three miles north of Rudy,
was found in the road near his home at noon yesterday.
Officers investigating the case declared that they believed
robbery was the motive of the slaying. STEWART, according
to officers, was known to carry a large sum of money on
his person and relatives informed them that he left home
at 8 o'clock yesterday morning with $700 in a money belt
about his waist beneath his clothing. STEWART was about
54 years of age, it was said, and married, though he and
his wife had been separated for about two months. Officers
would not make any statement in regard to the matter of
clues which they are understood to have obtained but did
state that they expect to make arrests in short order.

HOUSE ON WHEELS BEING BUILT BY
G.U. McDAVID "Camp in comfort" is
the motto of G.U. McDAVID, who is having a camping car
built at the shop of Thomas and Son on west Center Street.
Mr. McDAVID purchased an old Buick, removed the body and
has replaced it with a compartment built of glavanized
steel and wire screening.
The compartment is as large as a small room. At one end,
a double decked bed is being built in, equipped with matress
and springs. Room is left for a small refrigerator, a
gasoline stove and other camping necessities. The cae
is to have two doors on the side reaching to the top,
excluding all troublesome insects. The steel comes about
half way up the side of the car and the wire screen extends
the rest of the way, giving the effect of a comfortable
screened porch. The car is to be used for the numerous
fishing trips of the summer, Mr. McDAVID stated.
