Prior to 1871, Alma was known by its former name of Gum Town, because of the numerous Gum Trees in the area. Alma sits along the border between the Boston Mountains and the Arkansas River Valley, so while most of the city lies on flat land, immediately to the north is scenic hill country. Alma is surrounded by several rural towns as well, including Rudy to the north, Dyer and Mulberry to the east, and Kibler to the southwest.

It is in the Central Standard time zone. Elevation is 433 feet.

"Spinach Capital of the World"

"Gravity Hill" as it is so called by the natives, seems to defy gravity. Supposedly, if you shut off your car on the hill and put it in neutral, your car will start to roll uphill by itself. Many bored teenagers have often gone here on slow nights. Some insist this location is haunted. Although no real logical reason has been documented.

Four bedrooms are available in this home which used to be the old Crawford County Bank building. One of them is in the original bank lobby with the bed in the vault and the other is on the second floor and slightly haunted. These two share a bathroom. There are stories in abundance about the 'others' living in the house that the hosts are more than willing to share. A continental breakfast is included and if you want a hot cooked meal, that can be arranged.

Phillips Landing and earlier
The area was settled by David Boyd and Thomas Martin in the year 1818. After Arkansas became a territory in 1819 Daniel and Thomas Phillips constructed a lumber yard in the community to serve as a fuel depot for river traffic. In the year 1831 a post office was constructed for the community, at the time known as Phillips Landing. This post office was named after the newly appointed Secretary of State, Martin Van Buren.

John Drennen along with his partner, David Thompson, purchased the area for $11,000 USD. They moved their business of supplying firewood for steamboats to this new location on higher ground. The courthouse was constructed on a lot of land donated by Drennen on the condition that Van Buren become the county seat. The Drennen Reserve is one of the town's existing historical sites from the 1830s.[2]

Battle of Van Buren, 1862
On December 7, 1862, Union and Confederate forces clashed along the Arkansas River in and around the town of Van Buren resulting in a defeat for the Confederate army driving them south across the river with minimal casualties, however the Union forces captured 100 prisoners, as stated in a battle report by Samuel R. Curtis[3], Major General of the Union forces.

aka Upper, Upper Twp, Upper Precinct

FYI: Today, the community is referred to by the courthouse as Upper Precinct due to a voting precinct located there. The earliest record I've noticed the community referred to as Upper Precinct is on the first wave of WWI Draft Registration Cards (WWI Fallen Hero Jesse Henry SIMMONS) conducted by J.W. Kimes on 5 Jun 1917 at "Precinct: Upper".
