TABLE OF CONTENTS

This record was begun for the purpose of compiling various public records into
one source. The primary objective was to collect as much information on Civil War
soldiers who were either mustered into service from Bradley County, or living there
when they applied for a pension.

The majority of sources were found at the History Commission in Little Rock
and the Library at Warren. Newspaper articles and obituaries were extracted from old
issues of the Eagle Democrat published at Warren, and the Arkansas Gazette published
at Little rock.

Soldiers, obituaries and articles are listed in alphabetical order. Dates,
family information, etc., may contain errors, but my intent was merely to compile as
much data on the Soldiers and their families as I could locate.

Information on several units in which these Soldiers served is included, along
with many of the battles, skirmishes and campaign.

The most unique information is the list of Indigent Soldiers, which is found
in the last section. One must remember during the war and the years following, the
south had been left without men to care for families or till the soil. Some were able
to hide the family silver and other assets, others moved to western territory until
the close of the war, still with confederate money having no value, all families were
considered indigent. This list was instituted by the Confederacy.

I hope this record will be beneficial to others and especially helpful for
people researching their family lines.

BRADLEY COUNTY, ARKANSAS CIVIL WAR PERIOD The men of Bradley County, as elsewhere in the state, answered promptly when the call to arms came in 1861. B. F. Sweeney raised a company of men, which was embodied in the 5th Arkansas. Young McTammon and J. W. Blankenship each raised a company in the same year. Wheeler raised a company in the latter part of 1861, and in 1862 Captain Edwards formed another company. No battles were fought within the present limits of Bradley County, although Federal Troops made a number of raids into the county and carried off some horses and Negroes. In 1868 Cattison's Militia was there for a time. Warren received such a set back during the Civil War Period to require it's re-incorporation on April 8, 1880.
Warren, Ark December 11th 1861 His Excellency, Henry M. Rector Dear Sir Some time since I wrote to the Military Board concerning a supply of clothing that had been purchased here for our Soldiers by myself, our County Judge and Sheriff, and sent invoice of the same with the understanding that we would be furnished with bonds to pay for the same. We have never received any reply to said letter and we are individually responsible for said goods, the winter is smartly advanced and if they are needed at all now is the time and they are ready for shipment, to your order, and we are impatient, therefore hoping to hear from you soon I remain My Dear Sir Yours Most Respectfully. E. F. McCammon
