Isaac Jones is listed as a farmer on the 1900 census of
Scott Township in
Poinsett County. But in the last few years of the 19th century, he also
operated a cotton gin and what appears to be a general store. His account
ledger provides a snapshot of what life was like. He paid wages of $0.50
to $0.75 per day, or by the pound for picking cotton -- 4 to 5 cents for 10 pounds.
He sold a gallon of molasses for $0.25. A pair of shoes could be purchased for
$1.00 but as much as $2.85. Ladies dress patterns were quite expensive at $0.60 each; but a side of meat (pork) was 6-1/2 cents per pound or $13.65 for 210 pounds.
All of this and much more can be found in these pages.
