dictionary meaning of a veteran

\Vet"er*an\, n. [L. veteranus (sc. miles): cf. F. v['e]t['e]ran.] One who has been long exercised in any service or art, particularly in war; one who has had.

Ensigns that pierced the foe's remotest lines, The hardy veteran with tears resigns. --Addison.

Note: In the United States, during the Civil War, soldiers who had served through one term of enlistment and had reenlisted were specifically designated veterans.

The Wars the States have participated in:
American Revolution
From 1775- Until 1782 the Americans faced off against the largest empire in the world. Led by General Washington they won.
The War of 1812
Some call it the Second War of Independence, for when it ended and the US had fought Great Britain to a stalemate, Americas independence was assured. The United States declared War on Great Britain on June 12, 1812.

Mexican-American War
The American annexation of Texas whose independence the Mexican had never fully accepted made war with Mexico inevitable. When the Mexicans refused to meet with a US envoy sent to negotiate a settlement of outstanding issues, President Polk ordered American forces to maneuver close to the Mexican border in disputed territory. The Mexicans attacked and the war was on.

Civil War
It was Americas bloodiest war as brother fought brother. From 1861 Fort Sumter to 1865.

Spanish-American War
The ongoing revolution in Cuba against Spanish rule had long been a source of friction between the United States and Spain. The American people had long supported the goal of the rebels, and Spanish actions against the rebels.

World War I
In 1917, America entered the war on the side of the Allies. This war ended in 1918 with Germany surrendering.

World War II
1939-1945

Despite deep-seated mistrust and hostility between the Soviet Union and the Western democracies, Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 created an instant alliance between the Soviets and the two greatest powers in what the Soviet leaders had long called the "imperialist camp": Britain and the United States. Three months after the invasion, the United States extended assistance to the Soviet Union through its Lend-Lease Act of March 1941. Before September 1941, trade between the United States and the Soviet Union had been conducted primarily through the Soviet Buying Commission in the United States. The United States officially entered the war on December the 9th 1942 when the Congress of the United States declared war on The Axis powers after the Japanese attack on the U.S. Fleet at Pearl Harbor T.H.

Korean War--1945-1953
From 1910 until the end of the Second World War  the Korean peninsular was occupied by the Japanese.  As part of an agreement for the Soviet Union to enter the war against Japan, the Soviets were allowed to occupy the land north of the 38th parallel.  This was to be a temporary condition.  The understanding was that election would be held to establish a new government.    In 1945 the United States conducted election in the southern half of the county.  A left wing government was replace with an anti-communist government left by Syngman Rhee.  The Soviets established a communist government head by Kim-Il-Sung.  In 1949 both the Soviet and the American armies left the penisular.  Early in the morning of June 25, 1950 some three hundred thousand  Democratic People's Republic of Korea attacked across the 38th Parallel. Before the cease-fire on July, 27,1953 almost 20 countries has participated in the war.  Close to 5 million people on both sides were killed, including a large number of civilians. For more information see the Wikipedia article

Vietnam War
In the 1950's, the United States began to send troops to Vietnam, during the following 25-year period, the ensuing war would create some of the strongest tensions in US history. Almost 3 million US men and women were sent thousands of miles to fight for what was a questionable cause. In total, it is estimated that over 2,5 million people on both sides were killed
Desert Storm
On August 2, 1990, Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait. While Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had been making threats against Kuwait for a while, his actual invasion caught most of the world by surprise. The extent of the Iraqi invasion was also a surprise. Those who had expected an attack, like Commander of US Central Command General Norman Schwarzkopf, expected just a limited attack to seize Kuwaiti oil fields. Instead, within a number of hours, Iraqi forces had seized downtown Kuwait City and were heading south towards the Saudi Arabian border.

Operation Enduring Freedom
