This artillery battery was mustered into service in Memphis, TN in May of 1861. The majority of it's members enlisted there, including a significant number of Irish immigrants. In later months, two large infusions of recruits were brought into the unit from Arkansas. These men were recruited in Ouachita and Lafayette Counties. Other men were recruited from various locations, with a number of them enlisting in Missouri and Pensacola, Florida.
