Gabriel Bashaw son, William Bashaw, is buried in Joplin Cemetery, Montgomery
Co., AR.
Gabriel's date of death is thought to be about 1905. Gabriel Bashaw, son of
Peter Bashaw, was born in 1844, probably Missouri. He was in 1850 and 1860
censuses of Polk Co., AR. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War
(Sevier Mounted Rifles), was in the battle at Wilson's Creek, Missouri near
Springfield. Later, Gabriel was in Hot Spring Co. and then Montgomery Co., AR.
Although not shown in an 1880 census he is shown as having paid school taxes in
district 61, Montgomery Co. in 1890. Another official record of him is the
guardianship papers for a step-daughter, Nancy Thornton, approved January 1904.
This same child was under the guardianship of Simon Peter Bashaw on Dec. 30,
1905. Gabriel must have been dead or perhaps too ill to care for the child.
William, was buried in 1904. There are some unmarked graves near William, but I
don't know if one is that of Gabriel. Gabriel and wife, Octavia Brooks, had
several children, among them Sanford Ramey Bashaw. Sanford, known as Sam,

The Goodner-McConnell-Smith-Gaston-Wheeler connection is as follows.
John Cunningham Goodner, Henry's only son, married Susannah Smith. They were the
parents of Naomi Ann "Melvina" Goodner, my GG grandmother, who married Samuel
Milton Smith. Samuel was the son of Josiah Smith and Nancy Drake. Lucinda
McConnell, daughter of Robert and Sarah McConnell, married James Bullock Gaston.
Lucinda and James were my GG grandparents. Martha Gaston, daughter of Lucinda
and James, married John Guilford Smith, son of Samuel Milton Smith and Naomi Ann
Melvina Goodner Guilford "Ross" Smith, son of Martha and John. He married Mary
Dell "Mollie" Scott, and their son Gilford Jackson Smith. Mollie was the
daughter of Riley Jack Scott and Mary "Dove" Pierce/Pearce Scott. Riley was the
son of Thomas Scott, and Rutha Wheeler. Rutha was the daughter of John A.
Wheeler and Millie Amelia Maze. Compiled by: Doris Smith Pringle
Addendum: I think that the two Smith lines mentioned above are the same Smith
line. Susannah, mother of Naomi Ann Melvina Goodner, and Josiah, father of
Samuel Smith. I think Susannah and Josiah were brother and sister, which of
course would make Melvina and Samuel first cousins. I have almost nothing to
base this assumption on, but Susannah did have a brother named Josiah, and a
brother named Milton. Susannah and Josiah were both born in South Carolina.
Susanna and John Cunningham Goodner were married in Bedford Co., Tennessee.
Josiah and Nancy Drake were also married in Bedford Co. TN, where they had moved
to with their parents when they were young. Susannah named her first born child,
Josiah Walton Goodner, and her second child, David Milton Goodner.

EARLY FAULKNER Co. HEFFINGTONS by: Fern Poe Davidson
The first Heffington to arrive in AR was probably William Lowe. He was living in
AR Territory, Independence Co. in the late 1820s. It is believed that he was the
eldest son of Dorothy and David Heffington. David was born in Virginia in 1776.
He married Dorothy Lowe who was born February 14, 1780 in North Carolina. David
and Dorothy were supposedly parents of eight sons and eight daughters. The
majority of these children were born in Warren Co., Kentucky where the family
was living in 1810.
The first record of this family living in Faulkner Co. is 1842-43. The 1850
census record in Benton Township lists Thomas and his family, Henry and his
family, and Stephen and his family. Old David was living near the three sons in
the James Craig household. Barney died around 1836, shortly after arriving in
AR. Before the beginning of the Civil War the family had scattered again.
Stephen and his family had moved to Texas where a large number of his
descendants live today. Henry and his family moved to Montgomery Co., AR. In
1858-60, Henry Heffington was a member of the General Assembly serving as a
State Representative from Montgomery Co.. The majority of the Heffingtons living
in Faulkner Co. today are probably descended from Thomas, Barney, and perhaps
Isaac. Isaac, who was born in 1813 and died in 1890, is buried in Mt. Vernon
Cemetery at Mt. Vernon.

George Pointer who is 50 years old at the time. He is living in Montgomery Co.,

schemes, and by an oath to stickle at no acts or assertions to protect each
other from the rigors of the law in case of suspicion or detection of any of

Benjamin F. Striplin (Stripling) and wife Mary (may be Kinsey) they are found in
Gap Township, Montgomery Co., AR in 1850. Benjamin also has a land patent (cash
entry) for 40 acres of land in Gap Township in 1855. (See the BLM records for a
free copy). They had three children at this time, Mary A.E. age 5; John Anthony,
age 3; Lucinda C., age 1. Benjamin and Mary are both listed as born in S.C.
while the first two children are listed as born in GA, and the last child 1 yr,
is listed as born in AR, which means they must have came to AR in 1849. They are
living next to the Heathcock, Epperson, Bates, Collier and Robbins families all
from Georgia as well. Three Stripling girls show up in the late 1890s when they
married in Montgomery Co., AR, but are not located on any Census or other
records. Their names are Alles (Alis) born 1874, Clara born 1879, and Lula born
1877. Alles married Madison Maddox, Clara married Harvey G. Gibbs, and Lula
married David M. Plyler.
Mack Sweeden (with really no trace of) that was born about 1872 to Will/Henry
Sweeden who was born about 1851and Mary Elizabeth Baker. Mary Elizabeth was from
Montgomery Co., AR and also had a daughter named Melissa Sweeden. Melissa
Sweeden can also be found in the 1910 Haskell Co. Oklahoma census under her
married name of Sims. Melissa named one of her daughters Louella. None of the
dates match with the other Mack Sweeden born in 1902.

Reuben Tackett born about 1865 in Texas. Reuben died about 1933 in McAlester,
Pittsburg Co., Oklahoma. Reuben married Nancy Jane Sims about 1885, thought to
be in Montgomery Co., AR because that is where he met Nancy. Reuben is a full
blooded Cherokee Indian and it is thought that he was trying to hide it because
of all the conflict between the white's and the Indian's at that time. The
Tackett surname was changed from the Indian spelling which sounded like Takashaw
some time before 1900s. Reuben and Nancy lived in AR, Oklahoma and on June 22,
1896 they lived in Weatherford, Parker Co., Texas because that is where their
son Melvin was born. Reuben had to put Nancy in some kind of insane asylum in
Texas after Melvin was born for trying to throw him in the fire. They were very
poor and I think! She died about 1927 where ever it was that Reuben took her to.
Reubens usual occupation was working for rail-road and in the coal mines.
Clarence Everton Tucker born 1874 in Michigan. Married 1903 Montgomery Co., AR.
Marion Franklin Tudor's 3rd wife Fannie. Belle Scott Tudor born January 1892 in

Silas Perron Vaught, Judge of Montgomery Co., AR is buried in Bethel Cemetery
outside of Caddo Gap. Along with him is almost half the cemetery containing
VAUGHT's.and his 2nd wife. Silas's daughter is Easter Ann Elizabeth Vaught. She

James Monroe Voyles b November 15, 1855, who m. Nancy Norton Voyles he was born
in Mt. Ida, Montgomery Co., AR. On the 1930 census for Wheeler Co., Texas their
son's James Carl Voyles and Otho Lee Voyles gives that their father was born in
AR and mother born in Texas.
Ennis Edward is there also under the name of Eunice...and his wife Susie Poole.
Otho Voyles on the census as Other Voyles. Also Otho Lee was not born in
Megargel, Archer Co., Texas, he was born in Oldham Co., Texas which makes me
think that the other might have been born there also. Otho is listed in the
Oldham Co, Texas births. I also believe that James Monroe Voyles is the son of
William C. Voyles b July 03, 1835 Georgia d March 29, 1877 Comanche Co., Texas b
peanut field or pasture near the Oliver Springs Cemetery, Texas and Mary
Elizabeth Carroll b 1840 Georgia died in Parker Co., Texas they were married
October 22, 1854 Montgomery Co., AR I have William C. Voyles son of Samuel
Voyles and Alsey Head. William C. Voyles was married twice. He married second
Elizabeth Cockburn June 30, 1864 Montgomery Co., AR. I also believe that
Cockburn is right and not Cogburn. John L. Voyles son of Samuel and Alsey b
January 09, 1833 Georgia died in Parker Co., Texas buried Poolville Cemetery,
Parker Co., Texas m Mary Ann Cockburn September 19, 1855 Dallas, Polk Co., AR, I
also believe her name to be Cockburn and related to Elizabeth Cockburn.
I believe that they are also related to Mary Elizabeth Carroll Mary had sisters
Celia Carroll and Sarah Carroll who both married Cockburns, who I believe are
Mary's older sister's. I think that Mary is the youngest child of Dennis Carroll
and Nancy Waggoner who were married 23 Dec. 1814 in Rutherford, North Carolina.
Celia Carroll m Russell Cockburn
Sarah Carroll m Clark T. Cockburn
I think that one or both of these women are the mother of Elizabeth Cockburn and
Mary Ann Cockburn. All of these families were in Georgia, AR, before the move to
Texas.

William W. Wilkins married Temperance G. _____. He had several children by her
then after
she died he married Mariah Wingo 5 April 1842 in Campbell Co., Georgia. He died
in Montgomery Co., AR. His son Joseph Jefferson ( J.J.) Wilkins born 4-4-1845
was son by Mariah (William's second wife). Joseph married Sarah Jane Griffin in
1875 and had 9 daughters, no sons. William and Mariah had I believe 4 children.
There was a Samuel and a John D. Wilkins and a daughter I think Amanda.
1869 or early 1870 Wiley and Eliza Webster, traveled from Alamance Co. in North
Carolina to Haywood Co. in Tennessee. They had two small children, both just
infants, with them. William Thomas was two years old and Henry was only 9 months
in the 1870 census. Sometimes that year
after the June census or before Oct in 1871 they moved to Cedar Glade,
Montgomery Co., AR. Arthur and Richmond were born there in Oct of 1871, the only
set of twins born to Wiley and Eliza.
I wonder if anyone has access to the Haywood tax records for those years if you
would check and see if Wiley G. Webster shows up, he was born 05 Sep 1851?
Jacob Wehunt came into the Montgomery Co., AR.
Daniel Harrison Bowen, is descended from John Wells, the son of Christopher and
Ann Wells. John Wells was born April 15, 1777 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. In
Montgomery Co., AR John Wells married Lydia Collier, the daughter of Martin
Collier and Mary Bell Anderson, who were both born in Virginia. In Montgomery

and Lydia Wells went to Montgomery Co. (now Walker Co.), Texas. He died there
about 1841 and she died later.

"Descendants of John A. Wheeler."
John A. Wheeler, son of John Wheeler and Massey Borden. Born 1802 in Tennessee.
Died in Montgomery Co., AR. John A. Wheeler had a son named Flemman. That names
seems to run through the family, but it was originally Fleming from the Fleming
family in early Virginia. As the family moved west, the name as a given name
changed from Fleming to Flemmon or Flemman. Flemmon Bates (among other Flemmons)
is in my family line. In AR the name changed again and became Phlem Gardner
Wheeler. John A. and family migrated to AR some time in the mid-1850's. Gardner,
the eldest, stayed behind as well as at least one brother. Gardner also had a
son named Flemmon. John A. Wheeler's brother, Joel, who also came to Alabama
from Tennessee, is buried in Polk Co., Georgia and the church where his son is
buried is very close to the Alabama state line. Anderson, a brother, is buried
in AR.
John A. Wheeler was born in Blount Co., Tennessee, in 1802. He died in
Montgomery Co., AR, but I don't know what year. He married Millie Mayes, in
1827, in Blount Co., Tennessee. He brought his family to Borden-Wheeler Springs,
Alabama, (which was newly-settled territory that was part of the former Cherokee
Nation) in the 1830's. He moved his family out to Montgomery Co., AR, in the
1850s. He is buried there. I believe his home place is still standing.
