Cemeteries relocated to Little Fir Cemetery, Montgomery Co., AR

Sunset over Lake Ouachita from the top of Blakely Mtn Dam July 2001

Little Fir Cemetery is three miles past Big Fir Cemetery. Take Highway 27 north of Mt Ida for six miles. Turn right on the Little Fir Rd, Hwy 188, for six miles. Many metal markers here with the word "Unknown". In the early 1950s due the Lake Ouaticha project cemeteries were relocated. Reference: 1951 Corps of Engineers report "Relocation Plan of Cemeteries" for the Blakely Mountain Reservoir Area, AR. Information posted here with permission from the COE, Vicksburg office.

I visited this cemetery a few years ago when I was in Arkansas and was very disappointed in it's condition. It broke my heart because it seemed abandoned. It's a mess. A cousin who lives in Arkansas is trying to get descendants together to place a new gravestone on Gilly's grave. She and her husband went there this weekend and cleaned up some of the area where Gilly is buried and surrounding. They piled up some of the branches and what not near where someone else had cut down a couple of trees and had already made a pile. How do we go about getting the whole cemetery cleaned up and kept that way? Also we are trying to find other living descendants who would be willing to help clean up the cemetery. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You, Cindi  Posted 28 February 2005

FULTON
CEMETERY

The Fulton Cemetery contained 38 graves, most of which where unknown. 17 known graves were marked with native stones slabs and one was covered with concrete. The cemetery was below the flow line elevation and was relocated to the Little Fir Cemetery.

Alexander Marion Daves and his wife Susannah Scott came to Montgomery Co. AR in 1855-1856 and settled in the Owley community six miles south of Mount Ida, AR. Susannah, a herb doctor, rode a mule throughout the mountains doctoring people. Alexander at the age 34 enlisted 24 June 1862 at Caddo Gap in Co. I , Captain Francis Erwin Company, 33rd Arkansas Infantry CSA for a period of three years.  He traveled 115 miles to Camp Hindman July 3, 1862 and fought in the battle of Pea Ridge. The last record in his service record 31 Aug 1863 showed he was "absent and sick furlough". Alexander was probably buried in Fulton Cemetery along with his wife and son, George Silas Daves, and grandchildren.

Susannah was the d/o Wm. T.& Elizabeth A. Scott. Her brother William A. Scott was a Primitive Baptist preacher at Oden and a circuit rider.  He was buried in 1929 in the old Bill Scott Cemetery along with his three wives; Betty Gray, Eliza Karr and Betty Parker. He had six children by each of two wives and seven by the other.  He and his wives have a common headstone.

"George Silas Daves was a hard working farmer and a mason.  He raised cotton and corn on the land he owned between Lone Valley and Sims, AR along the Ouachita River. George sold acreage for the Lone Valley Church and Cemetery for the sum of $1.00 so they could have a church.  Thomas E. Swinford was the first one buried there at Lone Valley.  Thomas at the age of 22 married Mary Elizabeth Daves  age 18, 4 Jan. 1874.  Mary was a d/o A.M. Daves.  George sold the land at Sims, buying more land farther down the river on South Fork, known now as the Little Fir Community.  Mr Daves helped to build the school house, which served as a church and a community building. At first this building was called the Daves School, later being changed to Little Fir." George S. Daves age 46 m. Mary J. Riley age 19 16 Dec. 1894 Book C. page 67 Montgomery Co. Marriage Records. George married four times.

Abandoned at Little Fir Cemetery
We all know the story. When Lake Ouachita went in they relocated our ancestors' graves. There were five cemeteries that were relocated to the Little Fir Cemetery and abandoned. The Cunningham Cemetery contained eleven graves. The Dozier Cemetery contained ten graves. The Fulton Cemetery contained thirty eight graves. Surnames: Bates, Daves, Condry, Cother, Fulton, Harris. The Lenderman Cemetery contained fifteen graves. Surnames: Dick, Partain, Lenderman and Willingham. An Unnamed Cemetery contained twenty one graves. A total of 95 graves. Since 1951 only metal markers identify where our ancestors now lay. It's heart breaking to visit this cemetery. Broken branches, fallen trees and over growth cover the land. The original part of Little Fir Cemetery is well cared for, while the relocated graves section has been abandoned. Our ancestors deserve to be remembered and honored, respectfully. They homesteaded this land, built their homes, raised their families, buried their dead, yet their place of rest was disturbed. Their graves were relocated, then abandoned. With some effort, little by little, we can get the Little Fir Cemetery cleaned up and show honor to our ancestors. After all, without them we would not be here.
    Several Fulton descendants have started to clean up the abandoned section of the Little Fir Cemetery. We will be placing a new marker on Gilly Fulton's grave. As time and finances permit, we plan to place new markers on all of the known graves. We have discussed a memorial to honor all who have been relocated to this cemetery since there are so many unmarked graves. Gilly James was born December 27th 1803 in York County, South Carolina to Sharod and Leodicia Sandlin/James. She married Horatio Sparbin Fulton on February 27th, 1822 in South Carolina. Ten children were born to them. In 1840 this family had migrated from South Carolina to Jasper, Walker County, Alabama. In 1850 we find them in Gilmer County, Georgia where they lived until about 1858. By 1860 they had up rooted one more time where we find them in Mountain Township in Montgomery County, Arkansas. They remained in this area for the rest of their lives. Gilly passed away on September 11th, 1875 and is buried at Little Fir Cemetery. Horatio was born June 16th, 1795 in York County, South Carolina to James B. and Anastasia Tuel/Fulton. Horatio passed away on January 1st, 1882. Their Children; 1. Shelton born December 9th, 1822. 2. Rachel born September 30th, 1824, she married Sharod Caldwell. 3. Dekalb born June 9th, 1827. 4. Arabella born January 31st, 1830. 5. Jonathan F. born January 1st, 1834. 6. James B. born June 13th, 1837. 7. Emily born May 18th, 1840, she married Frederick Meredith. 8. Daniel born June 17th, 1843. 9. Leven B. born June 1st, 1846. 10. Dicie Elen born April 10th, 1849, she married Levi A. Miller.
We are looking for other descendants who have ancestors buried at the Little Fir Cemetery. If you have information, names, birth dates, death dates, etc., of anyone who is buried in this cemetery, in a marked or unmarked grave, please contact us. If you would like to help with the clean up or if you would like to make a financial contribution, please contact;

I don't complain
When the Lord sends rain
When the tanks in the sky run over
For the rain, you know,
Makes the corn blades grow,
And gives a lift to the clover.

My plans ain't crost
When the Lord send frost
an' the hills and the plains look wrinkled:
It's a seasonin' sweet
For the things I eat
The spice by the angels sprinkled.

I jes' take all
From the spring to fall,
As it comes from the one who sends it;
And my heart'll beat
Like it thought life sweet

'Till life in the roses end it.
