Goodner Cemetery, Montgomery County, Arkansas
Montgomery Co. ARGenWeb Project
Location: On private property. From Oden, cross the bridge, turn right at first fork, Southside Road, go three miles. Doris Laird's farmhouse on the right side of road with the goats and a barn is across the paved road with the cemetery to the right of the barn. In 1978 this was the Austin Powell farm. The tall headstones can be seen from the road. If you pass the south fork of Shirley Creek and reach gravel you have gone to far. The area is fenced with a gate and the grass is cut. At least nine headstones are broken. Forty four obvious graves but maybe as many as seventy-five buried here. Oldest marked grave 1860. Who else is buried here?

This is Lizey Goodner's grave. Unusual in that the cement work appears homemade, above ground with the headstone added at a later date. Under the shade of an old oak tree. David's is the broken headstone.

Cornelius Alexander Snider is buried in the Goodner Cemetery outside Oden was born July 29, 1829, died February 13, 1885.
The original marker was broken and gave his name and dates and said he was the husband of Rebecca Elizabeth Snider. I have since put up another CSA Marker. It reads 1st Lt. Cornelius Alexander Snider born July 29, 1829 died February 13, 1885.
Cornelius Alexander Snyder (Snider) enlisted in Company S 40th Tenn., Capt. A. G. Hammacks Company, Walkers Reg't C. S. Volunteers, on October 2 1861. This was at Camp Johnson near Memphis, Tenn. He enlisted for the period of one year. He was 32 years old at the time. Company Muster roll dated October 5, 1861. This company subsequently became Company K 40th Regiment Tennessee infantry. The regiment was organized in October 1861 and was composed of one Florida, one Kentucky, four Alabama and four Arkansas companies. It was captured at Island No. 10 April 8, 1862, released at Vicksburg, Mississippi in September 1862. He was declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Virginia, November 10, 1862. The regiment was called the 40th Regiment Tennessee Infantry and Walker's Volunteers, but was officially designated the 5th Regiment Confederate Infantry by S. O. No. 59, Hdqrs. Jackson, Mississippi, dated September 20, 1862. The four Arkansas companies were assigned to the 15th (Johnson's) Regiment Arkansas Infantry, the four Alabama companies were assigned to the 54th Regiment Alabama Infantry (C. A. Snyder) and the Florida company to 42nd Regiment Tennessee Infantry. The Kentucky was attached to the 8th Regiment Kentucky Mounted Infantry by S. O. No. 61, Hdqrs. Jackson, Mississippi, dated October 1, 1863. This company became Company K, 54th Regiment Alabama Infantry.
On October 4, 1862 he was elected 1st Lt. of Company K. He was captured while on picket duty near Atlanta, Georgia, on August 7, 1864. He arrived at Military Prison, Louisville Ky. on August 15, 1864, by way of Nashville Tenn. On August 16, 1864 he was transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio. Between November 16 & 30, 1864, he appears on the roll of those who applied for the oath allegiance. He stated that he was forced to join the Rebels. He also had given his rank as a PVT. He was transferred from Camp Chase to Point Lookout, Md on March 18, 1865 for exchange.
Company K 54th Alabama records show that Lt. Cornelius A. Snyder was absent on August 7, 1864 because he was a prisoner of war. I have three special requisitions for clothing signed by Cornelius Snider (Snyder). On November 27, 1863, Lt. Cornelius Snyder wrote a letter to his commanding officer asking for thirty days to Return home to DeKalb County, Alabama to obtain blankets for his men. Leave was approved on November 30, 1863.He had a brother buried beside him (road side) do not know first name.
Rebecca Elizabeth was a Coleman I believe. They had both been married before. Rebecca married John Drain and when he died she married Cornelius 1n 1857 in DeKalb Alabama. After Cornelius died she went to OK. with George Drain. She is buried in Carter County OK. Milo. (January 19, 1830 June 07, 1924). See the 1870 census for Polk Twp. Montgomery Co AR
