The Hughes Family

"I really don't know anything about this family. I submitted it hoping that someone could tell me who they are, and in the hopes that it would be one of those "treasures" for someone researching the family. I found the photo in my great-aunt's scrapbook. She had penciled the date "1898" on the photo, and below had written, "The Hughs Family -- a swell family". My great-aunt was Ressye Williford, the daughter of Samuel Thompson Williford and Laura Jane Jolley Willford. Since the Willifords were in Bradley Co. from about 1860 to about 1914, I am guessing that the Hughs are a Bradley Co. family. As far as I can determine, the Hughs and Willifords are not related. Aunt Ressye included many pictures of friends in her scrap book. Most are from the Huttig area (Union Co.), but the date 1898 on this one makes me think the Hughs may have been from Bradley. The Willifords were in Moro Township, but that may or may not be a clue." ~~ Linda Emry

"The older man on the right front with a beard is Moses Sanders Hughes. I'm sure that is his first wife and their children and spouses, the numbers and looks of age of the people match.

I have a 1973 Centennial Edition of the Cleveland County Herald. There is a 1899 picture of the Old Vance School with students and staff. The man with the beard is in that picture and identified as Moses S. Hughes, a director of the school. Several of his Word grandchildren are also in the picture.

I am not related to the Moses Hughes family. A friend has asked me to find information on her grandfather who she was told was related to the Moses Hughes family. Lucy Hughes married William T. Word in Cleveland Co., AR and it does say Wood there but it is actually Word, Lucy and William are buried in the McCoy Cemetery in Cleveland Co., AR.

Moses's daughter Sarah "Sallie" married Leonard Zealous Waldrop in Bradley Co., AR. She lived to be 103 or 104 years old. She was born Feb 22, 1868 and died Feb 1972, last residence at death was Hermitage, Bradley Co., AR. I sure wish the was an obituary for her, I don't know where she is buried or her husband either, he died Apr 15, 1919 in Pulaski Co., AR. Sallie is the one who said my friend's grandfather was related to her. He was William Rufus Calhoun Hughes, he died Feb 15, 1912 in Dallas Co., AR" ~~Edith (Watson) Marks

"Moses S. Hughes: In the 1880 U. S. Census he is found in Attala County, Mississippi, with wife Elizabeth and nine children: Lucy, James, Emma, Sallie, Elijah, Ida, Willie and twins Maggie and Katie.

At age 58, birthdate listed as Apr. 1842, Moses is found in the 1900 U. S. Census in Redland Township, Cleveland County, Arkansas; widowed, with three of his children, Emma, Ida and Willie and a daughter-in-law, Clara, living with him.

In the 1910 U. S. Census, Moses is living in Washington Township in Bradley County, Arkansas with his daughter, Sallie Waldrop, her husband Leonard and their daughter Mary E.

Jann Woodard's Civil War Information says Moses Sanders Hughes was born April 25, 1844 and died August 13, 1921.

In the 1920 U. S. Census, Moses has remarried - he is living in River Township in Bradley County, Arkansas with wife Arabelle and TWO sets of twin daughters! (Addie and Eddie age 7, Vera and Verna age 1)

Arabelle is not in the 1930 Censuses and I don't see the older twins, but I found the younger twins, Vera and Verna Hughes, age 11, adopted by Sylvanus and Susie Boone in Richland Township in Newton County, Arkansas.
