The officer did not know the man, and when he again pulled his pistol, Rainbolt returned fire and soon a duel was on. A crowd was attracted and friends went to the officer's rescue. Ten or twelve shot rang out, and Adams fell dead with a 14 calibre revolver piercing his head. ALLEN EMMET Dr. UNK 12 11 1894 FCTIMES
The result of a quarrel over a bill of fruit trees. Ed Jones fatally wounded, and Joe Shumate and Willis Jones painfully shot. Dr. Emmet Allen dead. The particulars of an attempt upon the life of Joe Shumate, and which resulted in the death of Dr.Emmet Allen of Colt, brother of Will, John Q., and Walter Allen, an innocent bystander, reached town Tuesday morning. It seems that Joe Shumate, a fruit tree vendor, a citizen, of Colt, nine miles north of Forrest City, had traded an invoice of trees to a man named Bampson, for one or more hogs, and on Monday started in the buggy to possess the swine. Dr. Emmet Allen, having business in Wynne jumped into the buggy, and they drove off . When they entered the Caldwell place, they met Ed Jones. Shumate stopped and asked Jones to settle for a bill of trees which he had ordered, and payment was refused. Hot words ensued, but Shumate and Allen drove on. Jones took a circuitous route and arrived at the home of his brother, Willis, who lives on the Dodson place three miles from Colt, in Cross county, near Smith chapel. Here he informed his brother of the trouble and procured a hammerless shot gun, and stationed himself at the gate awaiting the arrival of Shumate, who soon put in an appearance, having to pass that way in his journey. The quarrel was renewed and Jones is said to have tried to shoot, but owing to complications of the hammerless shot gun which he did not fully understand, was delayed a few moments and in the meantime, Shumate, who had a gun in the buggy fired the shot taking effect in Jones' stomach. Willis and Zeke Jones then appeared on the scene with a shot gun and pistols, and the firing became general. A shot supposed to have been fired by Ed Jones took effect in the arms of Shumate and Allen, from which the later died 12 hours later, from loss of blood. Later Ed Jones died Wednesday, and it was stated that Willis Jones was dead and Shumate was not expected to recover.-12-14-1894-FCTIMES NEWSPAPER

Squire Allen has long been a familar figure in the county, and was a most reputable citizen. He had lived in the county fifteen years, and was 71 years of age. We regret to inform the immediate cause of his death originated from the effect of a wound received in the leg at the Battle of Shiloh while serving the Confederacy. ALLEY WILL H. DR. 9 12 1861 12 6 1923 CITY
W.H.ALLEY, M.D., in his connection with the professional affairs of this community has attained a well-deserved prominence. Born in Mississippi in 1861, he passed his boyhood days in common schools of that state, obtaining a practical education, and manifesting at an early age an unusually bright mind. At the age of fourteen he was at the head of classes in which the majority were many years his senoir. When seventeen years of age he commenced the study of medicine at Vanderbilt University, was graduated from the Medical Department of that instiution in March 1881. He first located in his home, in Mississippi, where he practiced with success for two years, but later became located at Lewisburg, Miss., for one year, and then in Bellevue, Miss., where he remained until 1888. Dr. Alley then came to Arkansas and settled in Forrest City, and though only a few years have elapsed since his entrance, he has built up a practice of which others of more advanced years and experience might well feel proud. Dr.Alley's wife was formerly Miss Emma L.Cobbs, daughter of Paul M. Cobbs, State and land commisioner of Arkansas. To their union one interesting little daughter has been born, Mary. The Doctor owns an attractive home, which is furnished in excellent taste, and three valuable farms. He is a Democrat in his political views, a member of the K. of P. and prominently identified with the County Medical Society. J.H. and Ophelia (McCombs) Alley, his parents, were natives of Tennessee. The father followed merchandising in Byhalia, Miss., nearly all of his life, but in 1884 came to Arkansas and is now engaged in operating a large plantation. Mrs.Alley is still living , and is of Scotch and Irish descent. The paternal grandfather was born in Virginia and the maternal grandfather, N.H.McCombs, came originally from North Carolina, spending the greater portion of his life in Mississippi, where he died at the age of seventy-three years. The maternal grandmother's name was Reid; she was directly descended from the Scotch and Irish.ARKHISBIO-

ALTMAN ENOS T. MRS. UNK 7 17 1907 HUGHES
The FCTIMES. July 19, 1907. Suicide Of Mrs. E. T. Altman. She Takes Her Life By Shooting Herself With A 41-Derringer. In a fit of plque Mrs. E. T. Altman shot herself with a 41-Derringer Wednesday night, between 8 and 9 o'clock, the ball entering her right side near the lower rib and lodging in her back, from the effects of which she died yesterday afternoon about 2 o'clock. Mr. Alman says that on Wednesday evening he reached home a few minutes before his wife did. She had been up town. She seemed worried, and after supper went to her room and shut the door. Just before retiring he pushed her room door open and went in, and then some one passing attracting his notice, he went into the hall. On his return his wife was on the bed partly undressed. As he entered she said, "Enos, I'm going to shoot myself," at the same time presenting the pistol. Before he could reach her, she pulled the trigger, the gun exploded, and she fell on her side, shrieking with pain and fright. He then rushed to the door for help, and met Mr. Sam Hodges, who had heard the shot and screaming. There was no guarrel or harsh words between Mr. and Mrs. Altman and the act was committed on the impulse of the moment. Mr. Sam Hodges who lives in the neighborhood, heard the shot and screams, and went to the house and met Mr. Altman at the door, who said "Come in Sam, and help me, Maggie has shot herself." Mr. Hodges entered the room and found Mrs. Altman on the bed, with her clothes still burning. He extinguished the fire, and found that she had a wound in her right side and the flesh blackened with powder. He asked her who shot her. She replied "I did it myself." He then asked what for and she said "Because I wanted to. . . be better off." Drs. Mer... and A... were s... It was at first thought that the bullet had glanced from a rib and tht the wound was not serious, but closer examination disclosed the ... that the ... had passed through the body. ANDREWSON M. O. MRS. 3 7 1872 1 2 1899 FCTIMES
Death of Mrs.Andrewson and Child-On Jan.2,1899 I was called to Goodwin to conduct the funeral of Mrs.M.O.Andrewson. She was born in the state of Missouri, Mar.7,1872. Her maiden name was Cora C.Stafford. She was married to M.O.Andrewson Feb.22,1893 and they moved, first to the Indian Territory and thence to Arkansas in 1895, and lived and farmed near Goodwin. From this place on Dec.29,1898, she passed away to live in another world. When she expired, Harlan Hobson, her little son, just one month old lay a motherless infant in its cradle. When the little one was but two weeks old the mother had an attack of spinal meningitus, which assumed the form of typhoid fever, and her delicate frame yielded in death after a fortnight of patient suffering. Mrs.Andrewson was converted when a child in the Methodist church, but joined the Congregationalist Church, from which she held a certificate of membership. According to the testimonry ofthose who knew her best, she was true Christian. On January 19th, I was called to perform the same service for the little boy who died twenty days after his mother. The father and a daughter survive her.W.C.Davidson,1-27-1899
