Tillman Hester

Funeral services for the late Tillman Hester, age 89, who passed away Saturday morning, January 13, 1939 in a Fort Smith hospital were conducted in Greenwood, Sunday at 2:00 P.M., by the Rev. J.M. Barnett, paster of the Methodist Church. A quartet composed of Miss Katerine Brown, Miss Jean Ridling, Clifford Bell and John Cowne sang. Mrs. B.A. McConnell played the organ. Interment was at Cross Cemetery, with Dr. B.L. Ware, Henry Bell, Halton Stewart, W.E. Goforth, W.H. Boyd, Sr. and Preston Skinner as pallbearers.
Mr. Hester, who was born in Wehadgee, Alabama, June 18, 1850 came to this county in 1885 and has resided in and near Greenwood the remainder of his life. He was a carpenter by trade and built many of the houses in Greenwood and at Jenny Lind.
He was united in marriage in 1870 to Miss Martha R. Ware and to this union 11 children were born. 5 children, 3 sons and 2 daughters survive; Carl Hester and Walter J. Hester of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; Thomas T. Hester of Paris, Arkansas, Mrs. Morris Hartsfield, Excelsior, Arkansas, and Mrs. Allen Skinner, Mansfield, Arkansas. Also surviving is 1 sister, Mrs. A.W. Wheatley, who resides in Wehadgee, Alabama. His brother, the late Eli Hester, preceded him about 3 years ago. Death came as a result of pneumonia.
