Lawrence S Tennant
1918-2008

Lawrence S. Tennant, 90, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, in his home. He was born April 27, 1918, in Chicago. He attended secondary school at the Asheville School for Boys in Asheville, N.C., and then earned a bachelor of arts degree at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., in 1941.

He was one of the original 500 soldiers to open Camp Chaffee in 1942. It was then that he met and married Jane Daily in 1943. He was the founding vice president of the Fort Smith Little Theatre. In that organization, he acted, directed and helped in its administration for 20 years. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason in the Order of the KCCH. Until 2005, he was a lay reader and lay Eucharist minister at Saint John's, which earned him the affectionate nickname of "the oldest acolyte." He ended a long career in furniture manufacturing as chairman of the board of Okla Homer Smith Furniture Manufacturing Co. in 1982.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Saint John's Episcopal Church. Interment will be at Saint John's Columbarium following the service.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jane Daily Tennant.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan T. Kartzke of New Orleans; two sons, John L. Tennant of Plano, Texas, and T. Ralph Tennant of Clarksville, Tenn.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
