Wendell Jarvis Workman, Sr.
1923-2005




Wendell Jarvis Workman, Sr. was born September 23, 1923 at Charleston, Franklin Co., Ar. to Eugene Monroe & Trixie Ines Milam Workman. He married Reba Alene Burris in August 1947 in Sebastian Co., Ar.

Wendell registered for the military draft June 30, 1942 in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Ar. He enlisted in the Air Corps November 3, 1942 at Little Rock Ar. He states he has completed 1 year of college and his residence was Franklin Co., Ar. His rank was Pvt. After 40 years of service his final rank was Colonel.

Wendell passed away September 16, 2005 at Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. His burial was in the National Cemetery at Fort Smith.

Wendell J. Workman, Sr. 81, went to his great reward Friday, September 16, 2005. The son of the late Trixie and Eugene Workman, he was born September 25, 1923, in Charleston, Arkansas where he was raised in a very close and loving family with his five brothers and sisters. Ater enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1942 he served his country proudly overseas on the islands of Sarpan and Iwo Jima. After returning home he began a very distinguished career with Southwestern Bell Telephone, from which he retired with 38 years service.

He met and married his beloved and sweet life mate Reba at this time and enjoyed 58 years of her devotion and care in their marriage. Wendell joined the National Guard in August 1948 and was called to active duty and served his country again in Korea. He retired from the military with over 40 years of service, rising to the rank of colonel.

After retiring he lived in Fort Smith, where he continued to enjoy his favorite hobbies of hunting, golfing, fishing and "calling the HOGS." A very capable man at anything he set his mind to, he spent many hours in his workshop and playing golf and cards with his buddies at Fort Chaffee.

Wendell was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Glenn Looney. He is survived by his wife Reba, his son and daughter-in-law Nancy. and his younger son Jr. of Hot Springs. He leaves behind a strong heritage four grandsons. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in law, Betty, and Margaret, Sisters and brothers-in-law Wayma, JC. and Ralph; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial with full military honors at the U. S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.

Honorary pallbearers are his grandsons, and close friends, Jim, John, and his deer Trails Golf Course buddies.
