Athan Ivon Smith was born August 7, 1918 at Eagle Twsp , Sebastian Co., Ar. to Ervin E & Lela Nichols Smith April 21, 1940 he married Loma Grace Dillahunty in Sebastian Co., Ar. His residence was Greenwood, Sebastian Co., Ar. and hers was Charleston, Franklin Co., Ar.

Ivon registered for the military draft October 16, 1940 at Eagle Twsp., Sebastian Co., Ar. He enlisted in the US Army November 12, 1942 at Little Rock, Ar. and served until December 28, 1945. Nothing more is found about his service.

Athan Ivon Smith passed away August 31, 2006 in Rogers County, Okla. and was buried in Rose Hill Memorial Park at Tulas, Tulsa Co., Oklahoma.

34th Signal Battalion Description and History
The unit was constituted on 11 May 1942 in the Army of the United States as the 34th Signal Construction Battalion and activated on 18 March 1943 at Camp Crowder, Missouri. The battalion prepared at both the Tennessee Maneuver Area and Fort Ord, California prior to deploying from New York aboard the Dutchess of Bedford and arrived in England on 23 February 1944. After staging in England, the battalion arrived in France on 13 July 1944 to support the breakout of the Third Army and moved into Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge. The battalion then supported the advance of the Third Army into Germany doing so on 26 March 1945. After the surrender, the battalion embarked from Marseilles on 6 June 1945 en route to the Pacific landing in the Philippines on 23 August 1945. After spending two months in the Philippines, the battalion moved to Japan assigned to Army Service Command "C" at Kobe Base. The battalion was inactivated on 25 January 1946 in Japan.
