Harold Lee Oliver 1926-2004
Howard Lee Oliver was born February 9, 1926 at Midland, Sebastian Co., Ar. to
Roy Euland & Ethel May Duncan Oliver. July 9, 1946 he married
Doris Bobbitt of Huntington, Sebastian Co, Ar. His residence was Midland,
Sebastian Co., Ar.
February 11, 1944 Howard registered for the military draft at Midland, Sebastian Co.,
Ar He enlisted in the US Navy April 4, 1944, He served until June 6, 1946,
on the LCI's, Landing Craft Infantry. His final rank was Cox.
The Landing Craft Infantry were several classes of landing craft used
to land large numbers of infantry directly onto beaches during the Second
World War. A large beaching craft intended to transport and deliver fighting
troops, typically a company of infantry or marines, to a hostile shore once a beachhead was secured.
The LCI was an important ship and widely used for amphibious warfare in World
War II. LCIs and the men who served on them did the dirty work of bringing
invasion troops right up to the fighting, laying smoke to hide larger ships
from attacks, and providing close-in fire support using machine guns, rockets,
and mortars. In doing so, they suffered enormous casualties.
Howard Lee Oliver passed away January 16, 2004 at Fort Smith, Sebastian Co.,
Ar. His burial was in the National Cemetery there.

Howard Lee Oliver, 77, of Gans died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, in Fort Smith.
He was born Feb. 9, 1926, in Midland. He was a retired operating engineer for a
lumber and sawmill, a Presbyterian and a veteran of World War II. Graveside
service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under
the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw. He is survived by his wife,
Barbara; a daughter, Barbara Garcia of Gans; a son, Charles Oliver of Gans;
two sisters, Nancy Harris of Hackett and Helen DeVore of Torrance, Calif.; a
brother, Leroy Oliver of Fort Smith; three grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
