William Raymond Mooney
1922-1944


William Ray Mooney was born November 10, 1922 in Mansfield, Sebastian Co., Ar. to William Royston & Esther Mae Moore Mooney. August 28, 1943 he married Edna Laverne Fry from Barber, Scott Co., Ar. His residence at that time was still Mansfield.

June 30, 1942 Ray registerd for the military draft in Sebastian Co., Ar. He enlisted in the US Air Force November 10, 1942 at Little Rock, Arkansas. He was assigned to the 614th Bomber Squadron, 401st Bomber Group, Heavy. The story of his time in the service is in the newspaper clippings below.

Ssgt William Ray Mooney was killed in action April 9, 1944 while serving in England. His name is on the Tablets of the Missing at Cambridge American Cemetery in Cambridge, England. He also has a memorial marker in Pine Log Cemetery in Logan County, Arkansas. He received the Air Medal and Purple Heart Medal.
