James Joseph McCrory was born Octobr 11, 1918 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Penn. to Charles & Bertha Bangs McCrory. May 2, 1942 while serving at Camp Chaffee, Sebastian Co., Ar. he married Gladys Rae Thomas from Lavaca, Sebastian Co., Ar.

James registered for the militatry draft June 21, 1940 at Roxborough, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the US Army at Camp Lee, Virginia. September 10, 1941. His dismissal date is not known.

James passed away December 3,1007 at Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. His burial was in Lavaca City Cemetery at Lavaca, Arkansas.

James J. McCrory "Yankee", 89, was born October 11, 1918 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Surrounded by his family in a Fort Smith hospital, he joined his wife Gladys McCrory on December 3, 2007. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, daughter Nancy and two brothers and six sisters. He is survived by four daughters, Donna McKinney and husband Darynn of Fort Smith, Virginia Neal and husband Manuel of Charleston, Judy Green and husband Woody of Lavaca and Cynthia Stewart of Fort Smith; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Redding and husband Alan, Jennifer Hill and husband Dan, Christa Khilling, Danna Glidewell and husband Daniel, Davin Green, Jaime Leatherman and husband Jerry and Dylan Stroup. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren; Jaquelynn and Katelynn Bagwell, Hanna and Travis Hill, Abby and Kolby Glidewell and Derrick James and Madison Leatherman, and one sister, Marion DeSoi.

James was a United States Army Veteran and proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Korean War and then later in World War II where he served under General Patton. He earned a total of six Bronze Stars, a Silver Star, A Good Conduct Medal, an American Defense Service Medal and a European African Middle Eastern Service Medal after fighting in five major battles.

He also worked as a steel worker for over 40 years and spent 27 of those years at Fort Smith Structural Steel. He was a member of the democratic Party and a Lavaca City Councilman for many years.

The funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Lavaca with Brother Terry Hurt officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Lavaca City Cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Lavaca. Pallbearers will be Manuel Neal, Darynn McKinney, Dylan Stroup, Jerry Leatherman, Ronnie Thomas, Lawrence Thomas, Michael Thomas and Blaine Richardson.
