William Edgar Maxey, Jr.

William Edgar Maxey, Jr. was born June 26, 1918 in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. to William Edgar Sr & Susan Ardella Robbins Maxey August 1, 1938 he married Catherine Fern Shields from Greenwood, Sebastian Co., Ar. His residence was Fort Smith.

Bill enlisted in the Air Force January 4, 1944 and served until October 11, 1945. The story of his service is below.

William Edgar Maxey Jr. passed away April 11, 1995 at Fort Smith, Arkansas. His burial was in the Fort Smith National Cemetery.

Staff Sergeant, Left Gunner-Scanner, B-29 (City of Queens, New York), Plane #23 (Hayes Crew), 43rd Bomb Squadron, 29th Bomb Group (The Square O's), 314th Wing, 20th Air Force (Guam),United States Army Air Force. Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross, (7) Air Medals, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with (3) Battle Stars and The World War 2 Victory Medal. Completed 35 Combat Missions over Japan and the Mandated Islands. As he was the only member of his flight crew who had children, his nickname was "Pappy". As the father of three, with a fourth child on the way, He was exempt from the draft and voluntarily enlisted to serve his country during World War 2. He told his fellow crewmembers that he had four times as many reason to be there as they did, referring to his children. He later became the father of eight children and worked as a Carpenter until his death.
