Mont S. Johnston, age 97, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away on Friday morning, April 3, 2015, at Anna's Healthcare CBRF with family at his side.

Mont was born on September 1, 1917, in Fort Smith, AR, the son of the late Mont and Pauline (Fling) Johnston. Mont graduated from Oklahoma Central High School in Oklahoma City, OK, and continued his education at Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore, OK, graduating in 1935. Mont enrolled at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, receiving his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1938. Mont received master's degree in Administrative Industrial Engineering from NYU in 1950.

Later in 1963, he earned an MBA Magna Cum Laude and a PhD in Business Administration from American University in Washington D.C. Mont was initially enrolled in the United States Army Reserve until active duty called in 1941 and would span a career in service with our military for 22 years retiring with the rank of Colonel in the Corps of Engineers. Mont served during World War II, the Korean War, and worked at the Pentagon at the start of Vietnam. Among his roles, he served as a Service School Instructor, an Engineer Construction Battalion Commander of the 42nd Engineers in Alaska, District Engineer in Seoul, Korea, and general staff at Tripler in Hawaii and at the Pentagon.

Mont was married to Mary Louise Smith for 52 years, and she preceded him in death in 1992. They lived in Hopewell, VA, while Mont was employed with Allied Chemical from 1963 until 1971. Mont served as a manager of R&D, Director of Purchasing, and Vice President of Administration, as well as a Corporate Director of Purchasing in New York City. In 1971, they moved to Albuquerque, NM, where he would spend 46 years.

Following Mary's death, Mont found a companion in Sherie Spitz for a wonderful 19 years until, she too, passed in March of 2012. In 2013, Mont decided to move to Door County, WI. Mont enjoyed Ham Radio, which began in 1955-1956 in Fort Richardson, AK, where he was stationed. He built his first radio set himself. Mont also was part of a unique group who originated, designed, played, and could solve Double-Acrostics Crossword Puzzles, like the ones in back of the Sunday New York Times Magazine. Mont also had an appreciation for Jazz, Lionel Hampton (Stardust) and a good piano, particularly, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Mont could speak, write and read Korean, and was fluent in French, Latin and Spanish.

Mont was a gentleman with southern manners and a delightful sense of humor. Mont was a protective husband and father who grew up believing he was responsible for taking care of his family. David Brynski, Sara Posner, and Rebecca Posner, Emma Eden, Maya Eden, Marisol Eden and M.J. Eden.

Mont was preceded in death by his parents, Mont and Pauline Johnston, his wife, Mary Louise Smith Johnston and companion, Sherie Spitz.

Mont will be laid to rest with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

The family would like to thank Anna's Health Care and Southern Care Hospice for the excellent care and kindnesses shown to Mont. He would tell his family, "They take such good care of me here." br>
