Eugene Barnett

Eugene Barnett was born about 1920 to Emma Barnet, her maiden name. A father is not known.

Eugene enlisted in the US Navy October 29, 1940 at Little Rock, Arkansas. He was sent to San Diego, Ca. for training and from there to the Naval Receiving Stationm PSNY, Bremerton, Washington. From there he was assigned to the USS Monssen. His rank was Fireman 2nd class. The date of sailing that fatal day was October 13, 1942 from Base Rose for the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands.

At about 02:40, the U.S.S. Monssen, after being hit by some 39 shells, was given the order to abandon ship. Just 40 percent of the crew were rescued. The USS Monssen lies between Guadalcanal and Florida Island.
