Charles was living in Fort Smith, AR when he enlisted and was the co-pilot of a C-119B Flying Boxcar
troop carrier with the 50th Troop Carrier Squadron, 314th Troop Carrier Wing.
On March 23, 1951, while returning from transporting troops, his aircraft fire and crashed. Five other crew members successfully bailed out.
First Lieutenant Parkinson was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National
Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
