HOLLAND, HON. JOHN N., one of Sebastian County's present Representatives, was born in Georgia in 1857, and moved to
Arkansas when but a boy. He was reared on a farm and was principally educated in the common schools of Sebastian County and at
Buckner College. Early in his school life he took up the study of law, and for years was a close student of Blackstone, in connection
with his other studies. From 1880 to 1885 he engaged in school teaching, meantime sticking to his law studies. As a teacher he was with the
first rank in our public schools. In 1885 he was admitted to the bar, and since that time has been engaged in the practice of law.
In 1892 he was elected to the office of County and Probate Judge of Sebastian County, which office he held with marked ability for four years,
when he declined the offer for another term. In 1900 Judge Holland, as he is commonly called, was elected to the Legislature from
Sebastian County, where he is now serving his people in that office. He is a man of more than ordinary ability and his strength and force
have been recognized and felt in that body since the first day it met in the present session. During the present session of the Legislature
it has been said by men of recognized ability that the Legislators from Sebastian County, both in the house and the senate,
are among the ablest in the State. The counsel of Judge Holland is often sought in matters pertaining to the most vital interests of
the State. His decisions are not hasty, but are rendered in that cool and deliberate manner that seldom makes a mistake.
During the four years prior to his election to the Legislature Judge Holland won some of the greatest legal victories ever carried into
the Criminal Courts of the 12th Judicial Circuit, and his ability as a criminal lawyer was recognized by the strongest members of the bar.
Besides this, there is no man his superior as to the knowledge of real estate in Sebastian County. The writer predicts for him a brighter
future than he himself ever anticipated. He is a member of the Baptist Church, his father, Eld. J.J. Holland, being a very prominent
minister in the Missionary Baptist Church. Judge Holland's domestic environments are such as to suggest that he has a most pleasant home.
Mrs. Holland is an accomplished lady and is, indeed, the queen of their household. They have two sons, Chester and Cleveland,
who are budding into manhood. Their home may well be pronounced a quartet of perfect harmony.

MEYER, G.A., came to Ft. Smith in 1847. He was born in Minden, a town in Northern Prussia. Mr. Meyer came to
Ft. Smith directly from Baltimore, where part of his family had settled. His first business connection in Ft. Smith was with Mr. George Birnie.
After several successful years Mr. Meyer sold out his interest in this business for a large tract of land near town.
Part of this land is the bluff over-looking Massard Prairie. On this bluff he built his home, and in connection with his mercantile business
in the town he carried on kind of a plantation farm. His orchard was famous in those days. Mr. Meyer brought with him from the old county
a certain courtliness of manner and a happy bonhomic that won him many friends. The hardships and monotony of frontier life in Ft. Smith were
much lightened by the presence of the Garrison. The culture and refinement of the older officers and the gaiety of the young lieutenants gave
a zest to society in those old days. No one entered more heartily into the give and take of that hospitable time than did Mr. Meyer.
In 1860, the year before the war, Mr. Meyer secured a government position at Fort Arbuckle, and moved to that place.
During the war he was Commissariat in the Confederate Army in Northwest Arkansas. After the close of the war Mr. Meyer moved to Baltimore.
He settled his family there, and although he had business relations with Arkansas for many years, he never really lived in the State
afterwards. Mr. Meyer had a quick apprehensive mind, and great energy of character, but his most conspicuous trait was generosity
and the kind of charity that "Believeth all things; Hopeth all things."
