Harry Huston HENSLEY, 82, Biggers, PSH Feb 21, 1975 (taken from Looking Back-24 Years Ago, PSH Feb 19, 1998)
Discouraged and dejected after spending five days in the county jail , EARL HENSON of Ravenden, held on a murder charge, committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell last Friday. Henson, who lived near Ravenden in Sharp county, was arrested, Mar. 1 following the fatal shooting of Cleo Case and the wounding of Al King in a melee near Ravenden in Randolph County. He said he shot Case and King with a shotgun in an altercation following a drinking party. The three, with Hensons wife and father had been driving around drinking liquor, according to the story, and the fight started when they reached a point three miles north of Ravenden in this county. Sheriff Thompson, accompanied by Duputies Vergil Pace and Wm Russell and Revenue Officer L.B. Sallee, went to Hensons home and placed him under arrest. He was brought to Pocahontas on Monday and incarcerated in the local jail. Friday afternoon when Dupty Pace went to the jail whith Hensons supper he found the prisoner hanging from his cell door, suspended with a length of bailing wire that had been taken from a coal bucket in the cell. He had been dead for about two hours. Sherriff Thompson said that Henson had apparently tied the wire around his neck and climbed the cell door, fastened the wire to the top of the cage and jumped or fallen off the door. His neck was broken, according to coroner McNabb. The body was taken to a cemetery near Ravenden Springs where it was buried. Henson is survived by a wife and four children. PSH March 11, 1937.
