Interesting 11% of all deaths from the Thornton Funeral Home do not appear in the Montgomery County News. Out of 45 deaths on the Thornton Funeral Home website for the first six months of the year five were not in the local paper, usually the younger people or from out of state. Only four veterans obituaries were listed in the MCN in 2020, two from World War Two. On the Thornton Fb site at least four other veterans listed and whose obituaries did not appear in the local newspaper. Montgomery County, AR had 18 people die in 2020 from COVID-19 with 489 confirmed cases from one source and 386 confirmed cases and 15 deaths from AR Dept. Health site. The county population of 9,487 as of 1st April 2020 census. Quick facts. 27% of the county population is 65yrs and over.
50% of the obituaries in the Montgomery Couth News did not have a cemetery listed so presumed cremated in 2020. Also during the COVID-19 pandemic we saw an increase in graveside services and private services and or a celebration of life to be held at a future date when safety permits. In 2015 the percentage of cremations in Montgomery County, AR based on a study of the obituaries in the local newspaper the Montgomery County News was 32%. In 2000 9% deaths in Montgomery County, AR were cremated. The cremation rate in the US has been increasing steadily with the national average rate rising from 3.56% in 1960 to 53.1% in 2018 and projections from the Cremation Association of North America forecasting a rate of 59.4% in 2023. State wide Arkansas the cremation rate was 34% in 2014 which is on par with what I found in the Montgomery County News.
