Robert Hill Carruth

Robert Hill Carruth

Robert Hill Carruth

He is a son of Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Carruth.

"Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Carruth lived most of his life in Bradley County, Arkansas. He had a brother named Abbie Lewis Carruth, who died in Ashley County, Arkansas. He is my great-grandfather. They also had a sister named Nancy Carruth. They were all children of William Carruth and Mary Ann Stovall Carruth, who moved from Mississippi to Ashley County, Arkansas in the late 1850's.

Nancy was originally married to a Powell. She later married Robert Hill. Their Marriage License from Ashley County, Arkansas says that Robert Hill and Nancy Carruth Powell were married at Frank Carruth's residence. The 1880 Ashely County, Arkansas. U. S. Census record shows Robert Hill and wife Nancy Carruth Powell Hill with a stepson having the last name Powell.

Frank must have respected and liked Robert Hill to have named one of his sons after him.

I found this picture in "A Centennial History of Arkansas." Its a big two volume set in the Heritage section at the library in Huntsville, Alabama. You should be able to find it in Little Rock or other places around there." ~~Ralph Carruth

"Ralph, Who does Hill Caruth belong too? Can he belong to Benjamin Carruth? or no relation at all, which I doubt much. Hill's have a long standing military background, as also the Carruth's. Help." ~~Carolann

Carolann wrote Ralph regarding the following article about a Red Cross Celebration in 1917
Arkansas Gazette Sep. 30, 1917:
"Warren, Sept. 29 - More than 5,000 people from all sections of Bradley County were here for the Red Cross celebration today. More than 50 floats, representing the allies, the phases of the Red Cross relief and home work, as well as the various business concerns and schools of the city, formed a parade more than a mile long. The line of march traversed the main street of the city and on return to the business district was reviewed by Governor Brough, Lietu. Colonel Hill Caruth, commander of the 87th Divisional Ammunition Train at Camp Pike; Carl Hollis, cashier of the Merchants and Planters Trust and Savings Bank; D. A. Bradham, "Uncle" Hattie Blankenship, a Confederate veteran and Judge Hollis."

"I expect it is indeed Robert Hill Carruth, the son of Benjamin Franklin Carruth. The same one that I sent the picture of in his uniform. Remember, he had already been a state representative from here before joining for military service so he'd be "in" on the political crowd. Also, he was a Col. Maybe this is an indication he went by his middle name. In any event I'm sure this is referring to him. He's also the brother of the famous Arkansas Doctor Oscar Absalom Carruth. Real interesting stuff!" ~~Ralph Carruth

From Carolann:
"This is Lt. Col. Hill Carruth; his father Benjamin Franklin Carruth and mother Emma M. Harris, are buried in Adam-Singer Cemetery. Robert Hill Caruth was born here in Bradley County as was his brother Oscar Absalom Carruth. They grew up hearing the tales and exploits of their Uncle William Alexander Carruth, while he in the civil war.

This line descends from William Carruth d. abt 1868 Arkansas and Mary Ann Stovall d. abt 1878; I haven't gone back as yet to Crossett to look in their books, but I've been told, he died and then they settled in the Rustin, Louisiana area. Two went back to Arkansas; Nancy Emily Carruth, who had been married to William Powell, Sr. widowed and then married Robert Hill; her brother Benjamin Franklin Carruth who married Emma M. Harris."
