ed ferree Sat, 26 Sep 1998MULLENS
I am looking for information which will identify the parents of Beulah Etta MULLENS or MULLINS or MULLIN who was my grandmother reportedly born in McCrory, Woodruff Co., Ark., July 10, 1885.
The 1880 census lists J. A. MULLIN age 42, born in Miss. and his wife Nancy age 39, born in Ala., along with six children , four of whom were born in Ark. It is possible that Beulah was born there also, but I have no proof.
There is also listed in the 1880 census R. A. MULLINS, age 20, born in Miss. and his wife Molly, age 21, born in Ala., along with John MULLINS, age 5 months, born in Ark.
It is possible that Beulah Etta MULLIN (S) could have been born in either family.
Beulah Etta MULLIN married James Murray HUDDLESTON August 19, 1903, in Bay City, Texas.
I will greatly appreciate any information anyone has regarding Beulah Etta MULLIN which would identify her parents.

QUERY 063
Bruce Cunningham Fri, 14 Aug 1998CUNNINGHAM
I am looking for information about my grandfather and his parents. My grandfather, John Anner Cunningham, who was born December 23, 1859 in either St. Francis, Woodruff or Jackson Counties. Someone had written in the family Bible that he was born in Woodruff County, but this entry was later erased-but still readable. His obituary stated that he was born in Newport, Arkansas, but we are not sure if that is correct. He had a brother, George Washington Cunningham, and a sister Fannie (no more is known about her).
An aunt told me in a letter over thirty years ago that the parents of my grandfather-who died when I was seven or eight months old in 1934-were Ben Cunningham and Katie Younger Cunningham. Presumably, they would have been living in Newport at the time of the 1850 census and for sure during the census for 1860. John Anner Cunningham died in Sand Springs, Oklahoma (Tulsa County) in 1934. His brother, George, may have been older.
Family oral history indicated that John's father, presumably with the name of Ben-could have been a middle name-may have fought in the Civil War, even in the Battle of Pea Ridge (AR), and didn't return from the war or perished as they used to say. His widow, Presumably Katie, left with George, John and Fannie to raise, remarried. She died not long after she married and the three children were left with a stepfather who parceled them out to three different families for raising. The boys met again in Little Rock and they never knew what happened to their sister. Remember, that was the oral history.
I believe that John moved from Arkansas to Kansas to Oklahoma. At one time, he may have lived near Wichita and at another near Topeka. His first wife's name is unknown, but they had a daughter, Latha, who had two daughters. My grandmother, Rosa Matthews Hays Cunningham was his second and last wife, and they were married in Ardmore, Indian Territory in September 1898.
Any help you can give me will be appreciated. Thanks very much.

The Rowden family was basically rooted in Searcy, White Co., AR. My best guess at the time frame for the Pettis family in Hunter is the 1920's. QUERY 047
Lance Fallin Sat. 28 Mar 1998FALLIN, SIMMONS
My Dad was born in Clay County Arkansas and so was my Grandfather. My Great Grandfather was born near Weldon (Jackson County Arkansas?). My Great Grandfather was the son of Edward Townes Fallin and Julia Lou Simmons of Augusta, Arkansas
Edward Townes Fallin
Born: 3 Jun. 1843, Where: Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee
Died: 1 Nov. 1908, Buried: Augusta Cemetary
He married Julia Lou Simmons the Daughter of John Jefferson Simmons and Annie H.M. They were Married 19 Dec 1866 in Augusta, Woodruff County, Arkansas. I was told that during and after the Civil War (or...the war for Southern Independence) that he had a nick-name that everyone called him....."Old Pony Fallin" Fallin is really pronounced like Fallon or "Fowl-un" but has been pronounced as "Fawl-un" also (We never were picky about that I guess).
I contacted the Arkansas History Commision because I knew that Ed. T. Fallin had served in the Confederate Army. (Family Stories and such). He served in the 32nd Arkansas Confederate Infantry under Lucien C. Gause (Sometimes called Matlock's Brigade) Captain (or Colonel???) Richard Hooker "recruited" him in Jacksonport before 1863
Later on he Served with the 45th Arkansas Confederate Cavalry (Story has it he was good with Horses and doctorin' 'em) His Unit (the 45th) apparently went with Sterling "Pap" Price on the raids into Missouri all the way up to Independence, Missouri. In 11 may 1865 this unit was Surrendered by Brigadier General Jeff Thompson (Swamp Fox of the Confederacy). Apparently Ed. T. Fallin had been a POW for a little while right before the actual Surrender Date.
Family Story has it that Ed Fallin was sick for many years after the war (and during) and he appears to have a Rope Wound or a sword wound on his neck. He has obvious Scarring on his neck from the picture that I have. Pensions were not offered to Arkansas Confederate Veterans untill 1911 so Ed Fallin died too soon to get in on that. He never owned any slaves as near as I can gather...so he was either Fighting out of Patriotism for the South or maybe he was fighting because he had no choice...?????...I guess I'll never know for sure. He had a small farm during the time that he got married (a year after the war and during reconstruction). I have the tax and land records...looks like he struggled for awhile...went into debt...but then looks like he managed all right after that.
I wanted to post this so that if anyone wants to know..I can help them out...I have the "Fallin" side traced back to one of the Early Virginia Families. Also, one of Ed's Sons...Christopher C. Fallin....I'd like to know what happened to him. We think he might have died in a Gun-Fight (?) but don't know for sure.
Thank you kindly for giving me the opportunity to post this on the Woodruff County website.

I have a small piece of paper which is just a portion of a total page which was apparently written by an attorney a long time ago - it is in reference to a deed for a piece of property in Morton - written is the following:
by Mortensen Oct 8 18
Mortensen deed lot 5, Blk 3
M Heller recorded this deed
still in him according to
If I can serve you further

This appears to be a legal opinion on the ownership of lot 5, Blk 3 in Morton - this was purchased by my ancestors abt 1900.
My question - could the town of Morton have actually been named for a person by the name of Mortensen?? Would the courthouse still have access to these property documents which would have been in the name of Mortensen?
Thanks for your response.

Gail H. Banes Fri. 13 Feb 1998MABRA/MARBRA
I am researching Peter MABRA/MARBRA who was born in Cotton Plant, Woodruff County, in approximately 1854. He married Amanda Alexander, although I don't know the year. They had a son named John in 1891. Later, they moved to Fordyce, AR, where he owned land, ws a cobbler, and died in 1937.
There was speculation that he was white, but the 1910 census indicated that he was black. He was very light-skinned. Perhaps his father was a white slave master. We have always thought that MABRA/MARBRA was a French name, but have no proof of that. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Peter is my GGGrandfather on my father's side. Thanks.

WOODRUFF COUNTY: DAVID TAYLOR; LAURA TAYLOR; KATE WILKERSON; ENOCH, SARAH, LOUISA, LOULU MORRISON. Searching for any information on the above listed in the 1870 census of Augusta County, Woodruff County, AR. David and Laura Taylor are listed with another family. David was born in England. Believed to be the same David Taylor listed in the 1880 Batesville, Independence Co., AR census with wife, Katie E. Wilkerson and children, Andrew, Lula and George.
Kate Wilkerson is listed with the Enoch Morrison family. She may not be the Katie E. Wilkerson listed as the wife of David Taylor in 1880 but David and Katie Wilkerson Taylor gave their two daughters, Lula and Bertha Louise, names similar to the Morrison girls.
Bertha Louise Taylor, the 4th child of David & Katie Taylor, was born ca 1886 in Batesville. Katie is said to have died at her birth. Around 1890 she was given to William A. York and wife, Lucy Jane Mathis, to raise. By 1900 they had moved to Texas.
The story is that a man/boy on a horse with two girls behind him came to the York house and asked them to take the girls. Mr. York said they could take the younger, Bertha Louise, my grandmother. Lula was said to have been ill or physically handicapped.
It is possible that the Yorks/Mathis' were related to the Taylor/Wilkerson's because one of the Yorks sons was given the middle name of Wilkerson.
