Reneau Cemetery
aka Pleasant Grove
Howell
Coords: 35.0961949, -91.2273415
From Howell, south on AR 17 about 1.6 miles, then left (east) onto 3 Forks Rd (CR 43) for about 1/2 mile. turn right (south) onto Cemetery Rd.
There are more recent burials listed at both Arkansas Gravestones and Find A Grave.
It is understood that at first this was known as the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. On the present cemetery grounds or nearby the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church was located. This site was on the old ridge road from Cotton Plant North to DeView. After the location of the railroad and Highway No. 17 running parallel with the railroad (railroad was abandoned in 1941), probably the church near the cemetery needed rebuilding and because of the convenience of members, it was rebuilt on Highway No. 17 between the towns of Howell and Wiville.
The reason for the change of name of the cemetery is not known, but there was a prominent large family by the name of Reneau living in and around Howell. It is possible that this family owned land around or nearby the cemetery and they were members of the church, so when the church movcd, the cemetery was called Reneau. This family was old settlers of the community.
It will be noticed that there are two lists of names of persons buried in the cemetery. First the listing is from markers and second the list was copied from funeral home records and people who knew of persons buried that did not have markers.
It will be noticed that the first known death of a person buried in this cemetery was in 1876, so we feel that the cemetery was started either in this year or a few years previous.
The listing of the markers was done by Ralph Fore, Joseph H. Taylor and Curtis A. Houston. The funeral home records were copied by Curtis A. Houston. Other names furnished by Mrs. Pearl Howell and others.
This cemetery is located 3/4 mile southeast of Howell, Ark. Legal description: on the Northwest (NW+) Quarter of the Southeast (SE+) Quarter of Section 32, T6N, R2W.
