White County Oil Well, Four-Mile Hill. This is believed to be the first oil test well drilled in White County. It was about a mile and a half northwest of the point where Highway 16 passes over Four-Mile Hill, northwest of Searcy. The sign on the rig indicates that it belonged to the Star Drilling Company. The well was probably rather shallow. It was in or near what was for many years known as the Sliter Field. There are three men in the background who are not easily visible in the photo. Identities and the date are unknown. Courtesy Ivan Quattlebaum, White County Historical Society, from the scrapbook owned by Society member Oran Vaughan and started by J.F. Fisk.
