The White County Historical Society, (The White County Historical Society may be contacted at P.O. Box 537, Searcy, AR 72145 or wchistory@sbcglobal.net), would like to point out that numerous important White County records are archived at the Arkansas History Commission and are available for research. The AHC is located behind the State Capitol at One Capitol Mall in Little Rock. Research Room hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday except on state legal holidays. Upon arriving in the Research Room, all patrons must sign the register. First-time visitors will be asked to complete a registration form, for which a valid identification is required, and will receive a permanent research number. The patron will use this number when signing the register or requesting research materials. A copy of the policies and procedures governing the Research Room is available at the desk. The Commission may be contacted by mail at AHC, One Capitol Mall, Little Rock, AR 72201, by e-mail at http://www.state.ar.us./ahc/index.html or by phone at 501 682-6900. There is no fax number. In addition to the White County files listed here, an extensive collection of military records, maps, books and pamphlets and church and cemetery records may be found at the History Commission; also, census records, manuscripts, newspapers and photographs. Selected records from 1797 to 1950 are available from all Arkansas counties, including marriages, deeds, Circuit and Chancery court records, tax records (both personal property and real estate), probate records (wills, guardianships, executors and letters of administration) and some naturalization records. Inventories are available in the Research Room. The military records include Arkansas Civil War service and Confederate pension files; information about Arkansas soldiers in the Mexican War, the Spanish-American War and World War I; and various indexes to service in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, Indian Wars and the U.S. regular army. Books and microfilm are referenced in the card catalog. The map file contains more than 2,000 items, both historical and contemporary, relating to the state of Arkansas, its counties, cities, townships and geographical locations. Also includes are numerous maps of surrounding states and regions. Access to the map collection is obtained through the map catalog. A comprehensive collection of books and pamphlets is available on family, military and state and local history. To access these items, refer to the book card catalog under the author?s name, the title of the work, or a relevant subject. Church records at the Arkansas History Commission consist of organizational records from all 75 counties of Arkansas, although some counties are more complete than others. For access to these records, inquire at the reference desk. If you are unable to visit the Arkansas History Commission, it is possible to order photocopies of marriage or other records if that record is on the AHC microfilm. The charge for photocopies is $5 mailed to in-state addresses and $10 mailed to out-of-state addresses. WHITE COUNTY MARRIAGE RECORDS AT THE AHC Roll # Library # 1.
